This information on the European standards for butt-welding ttings is an exclusive service of the ERNE FITTINGS GmbH, published for TUBE in April 2010.
Information Service
The European standards (EN standards) for buttwelding ttings have been published at random intervals up until 2009 and replace the corresponding previous national standards (AFNOR, BS, DIN, NORM).
This brochure contains important information regarding the content of the standards especially with respect to the comparison made with the previous, applicable DIN standards. The corresponding national standards were withdrawn after all 4 sections of the EN-10253 were published. The following is a reference to the corresponding DIN standards.
Fittings for butt-welding DIN 2605 DIN 2609 DIN 2615 DIN 2616 DIN 2617
EN 10253-1 Wrough carbon steel for general use and without specic inspection requirments. EN 10253-2 Non alloy and ferritic alloy steel with specic inspection requirements. EN 10253-3 Wrought austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels without specic inspection requirements. EN 10253-4 Wrought austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels with specic inspection requirements.
Sections 1 and 3 (EN 10253-1, EN 10253-3) describe ttings which do not satisfy the important safety standards in terms of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and which cannot be used for applications according to Article 3, Paragraph 3, of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC). These sections of the EN 10253 will therefore not be considered in this brochure.
EN 10253-2 Fittings for butt-welding; non alloy and ferritic alloy steel with specic inspection requirements. (designated as Section -2 in this brochure) EN 10253-4 Fittings for butt-welding; austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels without specic inspection requirements. (designated as Section -4 in this brochure)
Seamless and welded ttings for butt-welding are: elbows, concentric and excentric reducers, tees with equal and reduced ends and caps. The EN 10253-2 and -4 support the underlying safety requirements of the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and are harmonized standards for materials. According to the Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) and other guidelines (e.g. Guideline 7/19) seamless ttings are considered to be materials whereas welded ttings, including those that are made from welded pipes, are considered to be components. Details are listed in the informative Appendix ZA of the standards.
These standards dene: The type of tting The type of steel The mechanical properties The dimensions and tolerances The test requirements The test certicates (inspection certicate 3.1 or if optionally requested 3.2 according to EN 10204) Marking The preparation for shipment or protective measures and packaging; (the surface protection of the ttings is implied under protective measures)
The tting are designated as follows: Specication of the EN-Standard (EN 10253-2/-4) and specication of the type (A or B) Material abbreviation or material number Type of tting (bend, tee, reducer, cap) Outside diameter D/D1* Wall thickness T/T1** The bending radius and angle in addition for elbows *) small outside diameter for tees with reduced junction and reducer **) wall thickness on the weld end D1 for reducers and tees with reduced junction The selection of the ttings and the steel material is the responsibility of the user.

The EN standards describe the basic specications which can be supplemented with additional options upon request and placement of orders.
Typ B
Full pressure factor Increased wall thicknesses on the tting body, same resistance to internal pressure as for a pipe with the same diameter, same wall thickness and made of the same grade of steel. The required calculation methods are based on the calculation standards dened in EN 13480-3 (Section -2 in Appendix A, Section -4 in Appendix B). The respective increased wall thickness for some of the specied wall thicknesses is listed in the tables in the Appendix C (Section -2) and in Appendix D (Section -4).
DIN standards
The basis for the calculation is TRD 301. The respective utilization rate for some of the specied wall thicknesses is dened in Tables 1 and 2.
EN standards
EN 10253-4 The provisions regarding the heat treatment of the ttings are made in Section 8.2.3: hot formed ttings must be solution annealed after the reforming process. If specic conditions are met cold formed ttings do not require heat treatment after the reforming process. There are no temperature recommendations for heat treatment. A heat treatment can be demanded with Option 3.
DIN standards
DIN 2609
The manufacturing process and the assigned product forms of the starting material are listed in the Section 4.1 and Tables 1 and 2. (The required starting material is specied for each material group in Table 2.) Special manufacturing processes and product forms of the starting material can be agreed upon.
DIN 2609
The heat treatment conditions for the individual material groups are specied in Table 3. The details of the heat treatment can be taken from the starting material standards and from the AD 2000 set of rules.
