a. Salt Diaperism This is the upwards movement of a low density salt dome due to buoyancy which disturbs the normal layering of sediments and produces pressure anomalies. The salt may also act as an impermeable seal to lateral dewatering of clays.

b. Faulting Faults may redistribute sediments, and place permeable zones opposite impermeable zones, thus creating barriers to fluid movement. This may prevent water being expelled from a shale, which will cause high porosity and pressure within that shale under compaction.

Solution 3.

Capacities Capacities will be expressed in ft3/ft. 20" casing ( inside) 13 3/8" casing ( outside)= 1.9175 - 0.9757 = 0.9388 ft3/ft 16" Hole 13 3/8" casing ( outside)= 1.3963 - 0.9757= 0.4206 ft3/ft 16" OH = 1.3963 ft3/ft 13 3/8" casing ( inside) = 0.8314 ft3/ft (0.1480 bbls/ft) 5" 19.5# drillpipe ( inside) = 0.0997 ft3/ft (0.01776 bbls/ft) Volumes 1. Lead slurry volume Volume = (2706.79 - 243.26) ft3 = 2463.53 ft3 = 438.35 bbl 8. Displacement volume Capacity of drillpipe to 13 3/8" casing hanger = 450 ft x 0.01776 bbl/ft = 7.9 bbls

Solution :

4. Casing Name and describes types of casing. Solution : Conductor Casing

The function of the conductor is to enable circulation of the drilling fluid to the shale shakers without eroding the surface sediments directly below the rig foundation. The conductor prevents the subsequent casings from corrosion and may partly support the wellhead weight. Surface Casing The function of the surface casing is to prevent cave in of unconsolidated, weak near surface formations as well as protect the shallow, freshwater sands from contamination with drilling mud. As the conductors, surface casing protects the subsequent casings from corrosion.
Intermediet Casing

The intermediate casing string is a purely technical casing. One or more may be necessary to handle abnormal formation pressures, unstable shale formations, lost circulation or cave-in zones. An intermediate casing may also be necessary to realize the planned mud weight profile. Producing Casing The production casing is set through the prospective production zone. This casing string protects the environment in case of production tubing failure and permits the tubing string to be maintained or replaced during the production life. Liner To save cost, the casing installed sometimes doesnt reach until the surface but finishes within the previous string. Such a casing configuration is called liner.
