VISUAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE IMAGES

These can be defined by:

1. MATERIALS

Materials which we work with require a specific technique and tools. This technique allows us to differentiate between images with the same subject. Within the History of Art, artists have represented the same subject but use a different technique.

http://www.google.es/imgres?imgurl=http://artepedrodacru z.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/picasso-boceto-para-lassec3b1oritas-de-avignon-1907.jpg

So we must try to analyze the technique an art work has been made with.

Even when using the same technique, the result can be very different because it also depends on the artists personality. So technique and materials used are important elements.

2. VISUAL ELEMENTS These are: dot, point, line, plane, colour, texture, volume etc and they are used when we create images. So it is very important to describe the visual elements that have been used on an image. Every artist uses visual elements in a personal way, giving a unique character to the representation.

3. THE MEANINGS ( seen at the following unit).

4. ESPATIAL ORGANIZATION To make an image is to place visual elements on a 2D space such as paper, canvas, fabric, wood etc according to a determined idea or communicative intention. PLANS (ESQUEMA) OF COMPOSITION this is the main group of lines which organizes and distributes the elements onto a chosen space to form an image. Generally the tracing is made up with: -Geometric figures: polygons, circles, ovals -Straight lines, curve or complex lines. -Simple or complex modular nets. A plan of composition can be simple or complex depending on the amount of lines that it has. TYPES OF PLANS OF COMPOSITION A. SIMPLE PLAN Generally they are made of a geometric shape, a line, or a combination of these.

B. COMPLEX PLANS

This type of plan is made up of at least two simple plans or group of lines freely combined. Sometimes it is very difficult to determine the composition of an art work because of the large amount of directions, and movement suggested by the elements. But with a watchful eye it is possible to discover the superimposition of the plan.

THE RHYTHM OF THE VISUAL COMPOSITION The rhythmic succession of the shapes which integrate a movement it is called visual rhythm. It is possible to set the following classification of rhythms: -According to the shape: rectilinear, curve and undulate. -According to the way the elements have been arranged: continuous or discontinuous.

EXPRESSIVENESS OF THE RHYTHMS

Every type of rhythm gives an expressive and concrete character to artistic compositions. -Rectilinear rhythm creates a visual effect of order and seriousness. -Zigzag rhythm is used to express nervousness, dynamism or even aggressiveness. -Curvilinear rhythm strengthens the effect of a soft movement. -Continuous rhythm results in monotony. -Discontinuous rhythms are used to express freedom of movement. -Increasing rhythms enlarge the visual effect of depth.

THE VISUAL BALANCE Visual compositions are determined by the of weight and visual strengths/forces which are the shapes and colours that focus or attention. When the visual elements are displayed at both sides of an axis, the balance is symmetric or stable and an effect of order is shown. When the number of elements is different at both sides of the axis, every field of the composition has a different visual force so the balance is asymmetric or unstable and an effect of vitality is shown.

LAW OF SCALES This is a method used to balance the visual weights of a composition of unstable balance. It consist of distributing colours, sizes and structures so that our eyes will be attracted with the same intensity by the two visual fields placed both sides of the imaginary axis. So, that is why the greater visual weight is placed close to the central axis and the minor far from it.

http://ceciliaolive.blogspot.com/2010/07/design-principles.html

LAW OF THIRDS this is a procedure used often in graphic design and on adverts to balance the visual weights on the rectangular sizes. It consisted of dividing the size chosen into three parts lengthways and into three parts widthways. The zones which exert more attraction or visual weight are on the intersections of the lines.

DIVISIONS DERIVED FROM THE GOLDEN RECTANGLE There exist other divisions that allow us to position centres of force in order to balance a composition with the ones coming from the golden rectangle and others rectangles derived from that.
