All of Us - #570 by Fr. Larry Use Your Voice and Vote We are slowing inching our way to our national political elections. Honestly, I will be glad when the negative campaigning is over. The television commercials seem to get more vicious election after election. It is disheartening as to how we treat one another in the public forum. I find it difficult to sort through the real issues affecting our lives now when candidates keep throwing mud at each other. I get lost in the facts and figures that can be interpreted in whatever way you want them to read. I have sadly seen relationships in families and between friends tested because people share different political views. Some have even been shunned because they have declared that they are either Democratic or Republican. I thought it might be helpful to share some excerpts from the United States bishops' document entitled, The Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. The bishops seek to help Catholics form their conscience in accordance with the truth, so that they can make sound moral choices in addressing these challenges. The Church does not tell Catholics how to vote. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience. Every person is obliged to follow faithfully what he or she knows to be just and right." (Catechism of the Catholic Faith, no.1778). We Catholics have a lifelong obligation to form our consciences in accordance with human reason, enlightened by the teaching of Christ as it comes to us through the Church. As Catholics, we are called to seek the common good; we must carefully discern which public policies are morally sound. A good end does not justify an immoral means. At times Catholics may choose different ways to respond to social problems, but we cannot differ on our obligation to protect all of human life and dignity and help build through moral means a more just and peaceful world.

Catholics are not single issue voters. A candidate's position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee voter's support. A consistent ethic of life should guide all Catholics in political life. This Catholic ethic neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It anchors the Catholic commitment to defend human life and other human rights, from conception until natural death, in the fundamental obligation to respect the dignity of every human being as a child of God. It is important for all citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest. The following themes of Catholic social teaching provide a moral framework for decisions in public life:
x

Human life is sacred. Direct attacks on innocent human beings are never morally acceptable. Within our society, life is under attack from abortion, euthanasia, human cloning and destruction of human embryos for research. Family based marriages between a man and a woman is the fundamental unity of society. Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible. Each of us has a right to religious freedom which enables us to live and act in accordance with our God-given dignity, as well as a right to access to those things required for human decency food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing. While the common good embraces all, those who are in greatest need deserve preferential treatment. A moral test for society is how we treat the weakest among us the unborn, those dealing with disabilities or terminal illness, the poor and marginalized. The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Economic justice calls for decent work at fair wages, opportunities for legal status for immigrant workers and the opportunity for all people to work together for the common good through their work.

A Walk of Love For the past several years, parishioners have had the opportunity to purchase a Walk of Love brick paver to remember a member of their family or friend. The bricks that are inscribed with names of our loved ones are placed in the area in front of the rectory that leads into church. This fall, we are in the process of taking orders for the next batch of new pavers and will have them installed before the winter comes. In today's bulletin you will find an order form to submit your requests. This is a nice way to remember, especially those who have gone before us in faith and who were very much a significant part of our life, leaving a lasting impression upon us.

Welcome to SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish

The Parish Staff of St. Cyrils welcomes all to our historic parish that has carried on the mission of Jesus since 1884.

Andrew Dinners are an invitation to young men to have dinner with an auxiliary bishop and priests in their area in a relaxed atmosphere. It gives the young men a chance to ask questions and learn more about the life of a priest and to hear vocation stories from the bishop and priests. Why is it called Andrew Dinner? An Andrew Dinner is named after St. Andrew, who in the Gospel according to John, brought his brother, Simon Peter to meet Jesus. All priests are asked to notice qualities in young men that would be good in a future priest and to encourage them to listen for God's call to the priesthood. SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith Religious Education News By Trish Nickleski, D.R.E. Dear Parents,

October 21, 2012

REMINDER: If you have a child that is in need of religious education you need to register them as soon as possible. Please remember all children must attend first grade in order for them to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion in second grade! REMINDER: If your child has chosen to participate in the Baby Bottle Project for the Womens Center, the bottles are due this week. Thanks to all who participated in this project to help the parents and the babies who are in need! Here are a few pictures from our first month of classes!!

During the month of October we are taking time to say the rosary together. To help learn about the Mysteries of the Rosary, our younger students are also coloring different pictures of our Blessed Mother. I encourage you to also spend time saying the rosary together as a family. I have been busy visiting our classrooms and watching students and teachers at work. In one day I was lucky enough to get to see several different religion classes! Our 7th graders were busy discussing the choices they make, the Ten Commandments and their conscience. Our 8th graders were reading about the Eucharistic Prayers, and our 4 year olds were hearing about Jesus, the Good Shepherd! It was definitely a good day to be in all of those rooms. This week our older students also participated in our annual High School Fair. Representatives from several different Catholic High Schools visited us, talked about their respective schools and shared the opportunities which they offer. Please note that the students who graduate from our school are well prepared and experience great success as they continue on in their studies. Remember to mark your calendars for Friday, November 9th. Thats the date for our Mothers Club annual fall fundraiser. This years theme Double Down on Dreams promises to be a great evening with all proceeds going to benefit our school. Finally, we are looking for some extra help in our lunchroom. If you are available from 10:30 AM until about 1:00 PM, are Virtus approved and would like to be a part of our school family, please call our office at 630257-6488. Mrs. S. Tkachuk, Principal

Helping Hands Needs Your Help

Over the summer months, our shelves in Helping Hands have been depleted. We need your help to stock up for the Fall and Winter months. Helping Hands collects food to distribute to members of the Lemont community. Grocery bags are available in the back of church to remind you to consider picking up items on your next grocery visit to return to church. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. We are always in need of non-perishable foods like canned soups and vegetables, pasta, sauces, chili, tuna, cereal and baking and pancake mixes. We also need non-food items such as paper towels, napkins, soaps (hand, dish and laundry), shampoo, mouthwash and toothpaste. Thank you for your support and generosity!

Holy Eucharist It is a cold winter morning and we are walking to school. I am only six, but still lucky because that school journey is always in the company of my mom, who has been teaching there for many years. Suddenly, throughout the frosty silence we hear the sound of a little bell. My childish curiosity stretches my neck up to see where the ringing is coming from. Yes, I can see two people walking towards us from the other side of the bridge, but at the same time my mom commands me to kneel down and be quiet! It was a priest and one altar server, going to a sick or even dying person and carrying the Holy Eucharist. I will never forget this incredible feeling of kneeling down in the cold snow and being afraid to even look. Before I was able to understand the mystery of the Eucharist, I already learned this one and unique respect, which cannot be explained in one simple definition. With years passing on, I have developed all kinds of different emotions about the Eucharist itself. Going back into the past, I perfectly remember not only the day of my First Communion but the moment of receiving it. We were carefully prepared, and I would even say trained, that this Holy Communion is received only in the kneeling position, can't be bitten, chewed or dropped because it is extremely HOLY. I think most of us were simply afraid, but on the other hand we were really exited. I could feel that I welcomed Jesus Christ right into my heart. I knew and understood at that time how important this moment was and I have the same feeling till today. The importance of the Eucharistic relationship between us and Jesus Christ is growing over the years when we get smarter and more mature in faith. Personally, the Eucharist fills me with warmth, care, love, tears and an indescribable friendship with Jesus. Those feelings keep me close to faith and church and make me a better person in general. They make me remember about God every day.

SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish United in Faith New American Saints by Marietta Vargo, Liturgy and Adult Faith Formation Director Today in Rome, Pope Benedict will canonize two American women, Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha and Blessed Marianne Cope. firewood and get water from streams. She often went to the woods alone to speak to God and listen to Him in her heart and in the voice of nature.

October 21, 2012

Kateri Tekakwitha, the first native American Indian saint, was born in upstate New York in 1656. At the age of four her parents and brother died of smallpox. Kateri survived, but it left her face badly scared. Her vision was also impaired and Kateri was named, Tekakwitha which means she who bumps into things. Kateri was adopted by aunts and an uncle. Kateris mother was Catholic, but Kateri was never baptized. Kateri was drawn to the Catholic faith as a child, but her uncle was opposed to Christianity. He distrusted the white man because of their treatment of Indians and for bringing diseases to their villages. According to her tribal custom, Kateri was paired with a boy whom she was expected to marry. Kateri, however, wanted to dedicate her life to God, not marry. Kateri loved nature and worked in the fields with her aunts, tending to the corn, beans, and squash, and she took care of their home. In the forests, she would pick the roots needed to prepare dyes and medicines, collect

At age of 20, Kateri was baptized and given the name Catherine. Her choice was not accepted by her village, however, and Kateri was threatened, ridiculed and suffered great hostility. Two years later she escaped to a settlement of Christian Indians in Canada, traveling 200 miles through woods and rivers. In her new village, Kateri lived a life of prayer and penance, taught prayers to children, and took care of the sick and the elderly, and made a vow of perpetual virginity. Each day, even in the bitter of winter, she spent hours in the cold chapel. Kateri Tekakwitha was often in poor health. The Lily of the Mohawks, died on April 17, 1680, at the age of 24, and was buried in Quebec, Canada. Those present at her death said that the pock marks from smallpox that disfigured her face vanished and her face was radiant. Her final words were, "Jesus, I love you. Kateris feast day is July 14. She is the patroness of the environment and ecology along with St. Francis of Assisi. Next week, St. Marianne Cope

The Catholic Church offers great traditions of Scripture, the worship of God in vibrant liturgies, intellectual studies of theology, joyful celebrations through the Sacraments, care for the sick and the dying and love and hope for the poor of the world. How Does a Person Become Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process by which the Catholic Church welcomes new members into its communal life. The RCIA is a living experience of the Church, and not just a series of classes which teach knowledge about the Church. Although there is instruction in the facts of the faith, instruction is but one part of a larger experience of knowing and sharing with other members of the Church. Who is RCIA for? It is for non-Christian men and women; for Christians that are not Catholic; for Catholics who are baptized, but have no religious training. How Can I Join? The Catholic churches in Lemont work together in this experience. Contact Fr. Larry or Doreen at (630) 2572414 and watch the bulletins for further details. New Group Now Forming for Fall
