Dear Colleagues, What is effective teaching? . . t here is no quick or easy answer to this question, especially to those who chose a career in teaching and understand the complexities involved in learning. With the Ofsted bar being raised in the revised Common Inspection Framework and a new Quality Code in Higher Education, it is time for us to start the debate What is effective teaching? . .and up our game, yet again! OUTSTANDING TECHNOLOGY Presented by ILT Specialist Practitioner: Claire Thompson.
A visualiser (also called a document camera) is a high pixel digital camera on a flexible arm which allows you to connect to any PC, interactive whiteboard and projector to display any type of material. A visualiser captures images of text, 3D objects, transparencies and microscope slides and just about anything else you can think of. Instantly, you can show images to your students, or record and save images to be used for all the class to see. Having a visualiser in the classroom or science lab means no more crowding round a desk to watch a demonstration or observe an object.

Encouraging improvement and it allows ongoing assessment based on what is happening in the classroom at any given time feeding into mini-plenaries as well as progress over time. It is a highly powerful teaching tool that provides the opportunity for immediate and effective feedback to students via peer and teacher evaluation of their work displayed on the visualiser. Opens up new opportunities for learning and it allows interactivity and encourages spontaneity with learners able to work collaboratively. Visualisers can benefit students who learn from repetition, and need to see material repeated and for students who are absent, for those struggling learners.

Socrative is a great way to engage students in learning. Working on multiple platforms - on PC, smartphones and tablets, in fact any web enabled device, - it is an exciting, accessible way to promote and assess learning. With a wide range of activities, Socrative will excite your students, develop a competitive edge within the classroom and use equipment with which they are already familiar. Activities include: multiple choice / true/false / short answer / quick quiz / exit tickets - students feedback on what they learnt/liked/found difficult etc. and best of all - space race Space race (the activity where normally mild mannered individuals become almost deadly rivals!) is an activity where rockets, for individual users or teams, are shown moving forward on screen when correct answers are given. Like the website says Make your images come alive with video, text, images, shops and more! You can easily use existing images from sites such as Facebook or Flickr or from your own hard drive and integrate them with sound files from SoundCloud, videos from Vimeo and YouTube, definitions from Wikipedia or surveys from Survey Monkey. First, create a free account. Next, get creating and sharing! Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing: 1. Use for promoting a business by linked the image to YouTube, your company website or a soundtrack from your new album if you are a musician 2. Let family know how you are by sending one image which is linked to home made videos 3. Vimeo. Well, what is there to say about Vimeo except that it is going to be brilliant for teaching and learning! Explore your creative side by uploading, sharing and searching for other peoples work. You can like, share and embed plus there are no ads over the videos either! As brilliant as YouTube is, that is one big advantage that Vimeo has. Blackburn College has a channel with over 200 videos already uploaded including filmed lectures of staff, visiting speakers etc. First things first, create a free online account. You can upgrade to fee paying one, but you will probably never need the extra bits. Now, get creative. Upload your videos and share with the world or make private, add free music and create your own channels or groups. Blogging is a well-established vehicle for personal reflection and commentary, although less frequently used under assessed conditions. Nonetheless, blogging can play an effective part in the delivery of formal curricula. Learners take responsibility for describing and reflecting on their progress, have access to peer progression and development and have a safe voice in which to discuss their weaknesses and strengths. Blogging software is free and reflects social media platforms, therefor is available and recognised by the majority of our learners. Blogging allows us to listen to our learners. We may not agree with all they say, or their perception of what they are experiencing. However, the sooner we acknowledge these perceptions, the sooner we can respond.

There are wide ranging positive outcomes inherent in the activity, notably greater confidence in undertaking critical evaluations. Students who, for example, dislike open discussion or have imperfect written skills are able to prepare their comments in advance before pasting them into the blog.
