LESSON PLAN

DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS: CLASS: XI E ( mate-info intensiv engleza ) NUMBER OF CLASSES PER WEEK: 2h NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 12 DESCRIPTION OF UNIT 6 FROM UPSTREAM ADVANCED (STUDENTS BOOK): This unit tackles the topic of work, the workplace, jobs, applying for a job; Language Focus: jobs; work and workplaces; collocations; idioms; phrasal verbs; fixed phrases with on; English in Use: conditionals and wishes; structure and coherence; word formation; Reading: multiple matching; gapped text; Listening: sentence completion; note taking; Speaking: work; the workplace; business; professions; money; Writing: writing business option/ letters of application. NOTES: 1. The total number of classes allotted for this unit is 12h. 2. The activities that have previously been dealt with are: Lead in (p. 119), Language Focus (pp. 122-125), and Reading (pp. 120-121) 6h. 3. The activities to be dealt with in this lesson are: listening (p.126) and English in Use (p. 130) 1h. 4. The activities devised for the following class are: speaking (p. 127), English in Use (pp. 131133), Reading (pp. 128-129) and Writing (pp.134-138) 5h.

OBJECTIVES: 1. to create interest in the topic of job applications; 2. to complete an exam-style task (note completion listening for specific information); 3. to practise mixed conditionals and expressing wishes; 4. to consolidate the use of tenses in mixed conditionals and wishes.

ACTIVITY 1: WARM-UP CANDIDATE RECRUITMENT


OBJECTIVE: to create interest in the topic of job applications; CLASS ORGANISATION: group work ESTIMATED TIME: 10 minutes MATERIALS: 3 sample application letters for each group (see annexes no. 1, 2 and 3) PROCEDURE: The teacher informs the students that they will play the role of some employers and will have to read 3 application letters and select the best candidate for the job (see annexes no. 1, 2 and 3). Each group representative gives reasons for their choice. Next, the teacher guides the conversation to a more general level: What general qualities do employers look for in the candidates? List 5 most important qualities.

ACTIVITY 2: JOB PROFILE: FIRE-FIGHTER (a listening activity)


OBJECTIVE: to complete an exam-style listening task (note completion listening for specific information) CLASS ORGANISATION: whole class discussion, individual work ESTIMATED TIME: 15-20 minutes MATERIALS: CD, CD player, students book(see annex no. 4) PROCEDURE: The teacher asks students to give examples of white-collar jobs, blue-collar jobs, administrative jobs, manual jobs. When the fire-fighter job is mentioned by a student, the teacher asks about the qualities needed in this job, as well as about the advantages and disadvantages of such a job. Next, the students are asked to focus on ex. 2c / page 126 (see annex no. 4). They will be listening to a fire-fighter talking about his job. They will have to complete the notes by filling in the gaps with a word or a short phrase. After that, they will switch course books and the teacher will dictate the correct answers for each gaps. Students will give each other a mark corresponding to the number of correct answers. The results are then communicated to the teacher.

ACTIVITY 3: MIXED CONDITIONALS AND WISHES


OBJECTIVE: to practise mixed conditionals and expressing wishes

CLASS ORGANISATION: pair work ESTIMATED TIME: 15-20 minutes MATERIALS: course book (see annex no. 5) PROCEDURE: The teacher sets the task. The students work in pairs to do ex. 1-7 on p. 130. They focus on conditionals (error correction, rephrasing, multiple matching, finishing sentences, etc.) After each exercise is done, the teacher checks the answers with the whole class. If there are unclear situations, the other students are asked to explain, if nobody can do it, then the teacher will provide the explanation for the whole class.

ACTIVITY 4: MORE GRAMMAR PRACTICE


OBJECTIVE: to consolidate the use of tenses in mixed conditionals and wishes CLASS ORGANISATION: individual work and pair work ESTIMATED TIME: 5-10 minutes MATERIALS: handouts (see annex no. 6) PROCEDURE: This is a follow up activity. If time allows, the teacher gives the students another handout containing exercises on mixed conditionals and wishes. The students work in pairs, guided by the teacher. Any questions that may appear are first answered by the other students if possible, and then by the teacher, if nobody in the class can explain the situation.

HOME ASSIGNMENT: If time does not allow for the activity to be done in the class, the handouts
(annex no. 6) will be given to students to be done at home and checked in the following class.
