iving in the New York

Metropolitan Area is like
living in one big adver-
tisement. Voices from every
corner scream at you telling you
to go here, buy this, and do
that. Wouldnt it be easier if
there was a centerpoint for all
the madness? Life and Leisure
is now offering readers the
opportunity to become a part of
a new social community
through its new multimedia
effort. Springing from its newly
reformed website, a Life and
Leisure Facebook page will
become the central location for
community announcements,
local reviews, and exclusive
offers only available to fans.
Advertisers will post several
weekly specials on the page that
are found nowhere else online
or in print!
Over the past few years
Social Media has taken its place
as a cornerstone of modern
society. It influences not only
how we communicate with
friends, but has transformed
into a medium by which con-
sumers and distributors can
interact in a casual comfort-
able way. Businesses have the
opportunity to reach out to
their client base directly
through Facebook, Twitter,
and other social media vehi-
cles by posts and media that are
easily accessed and give a face
to the brand. Consumers, on
the other hand, are given the
stage to offer feedback and pro-
vide raw insights that are other-
wise difficult for businesses to
access. Truly it is an arrange-
ment that thoroughly benefits
both parties.
Visit the Life and Leisure
page at www.facebook.com/life-
andleisurenj and click LIKE
at the top of the page. You will
then be able to take advantage
of dozens of community savings
as you find yourself a part of the
Life and Leisure Community
online. Life and Leisure is excit-
ed to facilitate such a powerful
community connecting point
and looks forward to the benefit
it will have on Northern New
Jersey!
This new online presence
stands to benefit local business-
es and advertisers as well. Life
and Leisure is proud to begin
offering a social media manage-
ment service to help boost the
connectivity and interactivity
between advertisers, their mar-
ket, and the community.
Packages include everything
from page-building and weekly
posts to blogging and promo-
tional materials. Contact Joe

THE DRS SYSTEM
Specializing in
treatment for:
R
emember as a child,
throwing a ball as
high in the air as you
could, knowing that in a few
seconds it would return to
the earth? Do you recollect
watching a fireworks display
and the residue after the
explosions falling back down
to the ground around you?
Perhaps youve been a victim
of the droppings of a bird fly-
ing by? Maybe you were a
shareholder in Lucent or
Enron or some other
stock or mutual fund
when you were reminded
of Newtons law of gravi-
ty.
Readers, stock
prices cannot defy gravi-
ty any more than a base-
ball thrown into the air.
Everything created has a
life cycle. Born, grow,
prosper, retire and die.
Think about Kodak,
Mack Truck or
Woolworths for a moment,
once leaders in their respec-
tive fields and now basically
no more than a faint memo-
ry. At one time, railroad
stocks ruled Wall Street dur-
ing the Industrial Revolution
and for decades later. Today,
the stock certificates of those
behemoths, instead of being
the talk of Wall Street are
used as decorations and wall-
paper memorializing a
bygone era. Just like people,
companies and their stocks
have different mortality rates
and qualities of life. It is
important to remember that
nothing in life or the life of a
company is status-quo,
except for death. Death by
merger, death by take-over,
death by bad decisions, death
by superior competition,
death by obsolescence or by
sale; its all the same in the
end, the shareholders usually
take a bath.
At least with mutual
funds, there is someone or
some group leading the port-
folio who can buy and sell
holdings or stay on top of
changes in companies or
industries to navigate the
waters, nimbly making
changes, additions or dele-
tions as the companies with-
in their portfolio react to the
never ending news feed
called the internet! Why go
at it alone, when you can
hire the brightest and best,
most talented fund managers
in the nation to get a fight-
ing chance at beating the
odds to prolong the longevity
of your portfolio and retire-
ment nest-egg for the rest of
your life and beyond? The
only way I can think to make
the outcome better is to guar-
antee* the results through
the purchase of a variable
annuity with a living benefit
rider!
A living benefit rider
enables the investor to guar-
antee* a monthly income for
as long as they and their
spouse live, regardless of how
low the account value may
fall, even if it drops to zero! If
the account rises because of
positive performance, the
rider will lock-in and reset
the withdrawal base to either
the highest monthly, quarter-
ly or annual anniversary
(depending on the individual
contract and company).
This new figure will result in
a higher income check, also
guaranteed* for the rest of
your and your spouses life!
Therefore, could one say
that a variable annuity
including a living benefit
rider, with the portfolio allo-
cated to stock and or bond
funds, could actually defy
gravity as it pertains to life-
long retirement income? The
answer is a resounding Yes!
In my opinion it is impera-
tive that everyone be aware
of their investment options
to include the one discussed
here. Want to know more?
Call me for a no cost,
no obligation appointment.
Youll leave empowered with
the knowledge and motiva-
tion to take appropriate
action with your retirement
funds!

e are now entering
a new era of health.
The mouth is defi-
nitely connected to the rest of
our body, from an anatomic
and medical standpoint. The
last two articles gave numerous,
viable connections between
oral and body health. In the
future, there will be even more
evidence of interrelationships
to medical issues. Total patient
care will soon be real for den-
tists and physicians. Here are
some tests just emerging for
dentists to perform:
A1C levels of diabetic

F
athers Day is a
special celebra-
tion where we
take time to honor the
patriarchs of our fami-
lies. We reflect on the
sacrifices that our
fathers have made as
well as the commit-
ments they have prom-
ised to us.
Unfortunately, we
dont always show our
fathers the respect they
deserve despite the
numerous contribu-
tions they have made
to support their fami-
lies. Fathers Day gives
us that opportunity to
honor our dads and
show them how grateful we
are to have them in our lives
and how much we truly love
them.
Our fathers not only pro-
vide our material needs, but
they also teach us many things
throughout life whether that
is a set of skills, learning how
to play a sport, change a tire,
apply for a job; the list goes on
and on. Dads not only provide
us with material gain, howev-
er, they also can provide much
more. For example, I look at
my own father and see what
he has taught me throughout
my life. I have been very for-
tunate to have such a wonder-
ful father who has dedicated
so much time and work to
benefit my family and me so
that we could live the
life that we currently
have.
The first thing he
has taught me is family
always comes first. My
dad has always made
time for his family. He
also taught us to always
make time for each
other. Growing up my
dad would set aside time
for us to be together as
family whether that be
through family dinners,
a weekly family night,
summer vacations, or
Sunday afternoon
adventures. Through
spending these little
times with us, my dad
was constantly involved in our
lives. I know that today, a lot
of families do not get to expe-
rience this privilege, but I am
so grateful that my dad has
taken the time to keep our
family together. Because of
this, we are a close-knit, loyal,
and loving family.
Another important thing

are counting down the
days to the end of
school; even though the
school year is coming to a
close and summer is begin-

a vacation. Two months is
too long for education and
learning to take a break.
Summer vacation is great for
our bodies, but we must con-

our minds to best be prepared
for the upcoming school
years and what lies ahead.
During the college

Through the preparedness,

of basic and advanced learn-

mentors, your child will have
an expert to guide and define
their talents, abilities, and

preaches that knowledge is
power ONLY when used.
Brainy-Acts works

addition to assisting students
with their academia, Brainy-

our comprehensive tutoring
system.
The countdown until

my dad taught me is family
requires sacrifice. Although I
did not learn to appreciate it
until I was older, I learned how
many sacrifices my dad made
so that he could be involved
in my siblings lives and mine.
Job opportunities, increased
income, etc. are just some of
the benefits my dad passed up
so that he could be there for
his wife and kids. Even grow-
ing up my siblings and I were
asked to forfeit our own time
whether that be personal time
or time with our friends so
that we could make time for
our family. I believe this lesson
is one of the most important
ones because not only did our
Dad make sacrifices, but all of
us had to as well. My dad was
just the one who set the exam-
ple by giving up so much more

our skin is the largest
organ of your body. It
protects you from
harmful bacteria and viruses
that can cause infections. It
also helps your body sense
the outside world and regu-
late your body temperature.
Therefore, it should
come as no surprise that bil-
lions of dollars are spent each
year on skin care products
and billions more are spent
on medical costs to treat
damaged skin. From powders
and lotions to sunscreens and
firming creams, caring for
your skin is a necessity
throughout your lifetime.
From infancy to adulthood,
proper skin care can help
ensure healthy skin through-
out your life.
As we grow older, our
bodies produce less moisture,
drying out the skin,
which then begins
to lose its elasticity
and its ability to
protect the rest of
the body. For many
people, looking after
the skin is not only
a question of aes-
thetics, but it is also
essential for ones
health and well-
being. Conditions
that stress, clog or
inflame your skin
can cause symptoms
such as redness,
swelling, burning,
and itching. Aller-
gies, irritants, genet-
ic makeup, certain
diseases, and im-
mune system disor-
ders can cause der-
matitis, hives and
other skin conditions.
Columbia Healing
Cream has been devel-
oped by dermatologists
to help people of all
ages naturally maintain
the proper balance of
moisture in their skin.
Blending natures best
emollients with the
latest technology,
Columbia Healing
Cream comforts and
softens the skin while
helping to alleviate
cracking, dryness and
itching. The unique
combination of botani-
cals, vitamins and min-
erals in this product
protect and soothe the
skin, while stimulating
the growth of new cells
to bring back younger
looking skin.
Manufactured in the
United States by a 140-plus
year old skin care products
company, Columbia Healing
Cream is suitable for treating
the most sensitive skin,
including that of people who
suffer from diabetes, eczema
or psoriasis. If you want to
make your skin smile, simply
use Columbia Healing
Cream as directed.

S
ummer and the warm
weather are just about
here. It's time to get off
our couches and venture into
the great outdoors. These
plans will often include your
furry, four-legged friends.
However, dogs and cats can
suffer from hot weather prob-
lems similar to those of the
human- like enduring the
heat, bugs and allergies. As it
gets hotter, it is important to
take some simple precautions
to keep our pets healthy and
safe from the hazards that
accompany summer.
Heat stroke is a very seri-
ous and very common occur-
rence during the summer
months and results when your
pet's body temperature rises
above the normal range. Heat
stroke can be a life-threaten-
ing disease, can afflict dogs or
cats quite rapidly and be diffi-
cult to treat. A little preven-
tion can go a long way.
Certain pets may be predis-
posed to this condition such as
brachycephalic breeds (i.e.
pushed in nose) like a Bulldog
or Persian cat, overweight
pets, very young and very old
pets or ill pets. Heat strokes
occur a lot in late spring and
early summer because our pets
are out of shape and are not
yet acclimated to the hot
weather. Therefore, introduce
pets to exercise slowly. Also,
try to exercise pets in the
morning or evening when
temperatures are lower. Be
sure to provide your pet with
plenty of breaks for water and
time to cool down in the
shade.
There are many ways to
avoid heat stroke. The most
known adage is to never leave
a pet in the car on warm days.
Even with the windows open,
temperatures in a car can rise
to deadly levels within min-
utes. Dogs and cats dont sweat
the same way we do. They
thermo-regulate mostly by
panting and can sweat mini-
mally through the bottom of
their feet. One of the easiest
preventative measures is to
make sure that pets have free
access to water and shade
when kept outside.
Early signs of heat stroke
may include rapid panting,
heavy breathing, excessive
salivation, increased body
temperature (i.e. above 100-
102 degrees F), depression,
weakness, and vomiting. If you
suspect that heat stroke is tak-
ing place, seek immediate vet-
erinary attention. In the
meantime, you should remove
the animal from the hot area
and start lowering your pets
body temperature. This
shouldn't be done too quickly,
which can also be dangerous.
Therefore only use cool water,
NO ice. An easy remedy is to
place cool water soaked T-
shirt on your pet and take
them right to your veterinari-
an. Aside from heat stroke,
more outdoor activities mean
the risk of outdoor traumas
and increased accidents. Some
tips include: not leaving pets
unsupervised around a pool,
make sure all pets wear flota-
tion devices on boats, and try
not to let your dog drink pool
water, which contains chemi-
cals that could cause
stomach upset.
Cats that are
allowed outdoors also
venture out more in
the summer. Be on the
lookout for abscesses
and other fighting
injuries. Cats that are
neutered or spayed may be at a
lower risk of such injuries as
they are unlikely to be
involved in mating-induced
aggression. The best way to
avoid these injuries is to keep
your cat indoors.
The warmer months also
means more bugs. Fleas are a
common pest that live off the
blood of their hosts and can
cause itching, or worse, an
allergic reaction called flea-
bite dermatitis. Fleas can also
be carriers for an intestinal
parasite called tapeworms.
Mosquitoes are another pest
that may carry heartworms,
which can be life threatening
to your dog and cat. More trips
to the dog park can also
increase exposure to infected
soil and intestinal parasites,
some of which are transmissi-
ble to people (zoonotic). In
North Jersey, we cant forget
about ticks that can carry a
variety of diseases, most
notably Lyme disease.
Preventatives for fleas, ticks,
heartworms and intestinal par-
asites are available from your
veterinarian and should be
given year-round. The benefits
of prevention far outweigh the
nuisance and health hazards
for your pet and to us as well.
Another summer risk for
cats that live in apartment
buildings or in homes with a
second floor is high-rise syn-
drome. This is the unfortunate
scenario of us wanting to open
windows in the nice weather
and cats falling out of them.

My dad has taught me
many great things growing up
which I hope to one day put
into practice myself. What he
has passed down to me are life
lessons that ultimately repre-
sent what being a father is all
about.
Unfortunately, many of us
have not had the best relation-
ships with our fathers; some of
us have no relationship what-
soever. Fathers Day can be one
of the most depressing days of
the year for some people. Even
though our Dads may have
failed us in some way or anoth-
er, there has most likely been
someone else who stepped in
and filled that father figure
role. We may not have even
realized this at the time, but
looking back, most of us can
see men who have stepped in
where fathers failed to,
whether it has been a short-
term or long-term relationship.
Although they may not be our
biological dads, Fathers Day is
also a way to commemorate
these men as well who have
been like a father to us in spe-
cific areas in our lives.
So as we celebrate this
Fathers Day, let us remember
all the things our fathers have
done for us whether great or
small. Let us honor and show
respect to the men who have
supported our families and
have taught us invaluable les-
sons that they passed down as
part of their legacy which we
too can hopefully one day pass
on to our children.

R
ising fuel costs and a
suspect economy has
forced many home-
owners to look for ways to cut
costs around the house.
Conserving energy is one way
to do just that. And in addi-
tion to saving money, con-
serving energy also helps save
the planet.
Though preserving ener-
gy around the house might
sound difficult, it's actually
quite easy, and you don't have
to sacrifice comfort to con-
serve. The following are a few
ways to conserve energy
around the house and help
your bottom line and the
planet at the same time.
Cool it with the hot water.
Heating water for the home
accounts for a significant per-
centage of your monthly utili-
ty bill. But many homeowners
might not know just how sim-
ple it can be to reduce the
costs of heating the water.
You can trim between 3 to 5
percent off your utility bill for
every 10 degrees you dial
down the thermostat on your
water heater. A water heater
set in the range of 130 F won't
require as much energy to
heat and hold water as one set
around 140 F or above, and a
setting of 130 F is enough to
prevent bacteria from growing
within the tank and still pro-
vide water that's hot enough
for a shower or bath. A water
heater set around 130 F might
also extend the life of the
tank. That's because chemical
reactions speed up in tanks
that are hotter, accelerating
the buildup of rust within the
tank.
Install a digital thermostat.
A digital thermostat makes it
easy for homeowners to auto-
matically turn down their
thermostats during times of
the day when no one is home.
The thermostats can be pro-
grammed to turn up the heat
shortly before you typically
arrive home, so you won't be
forced to sit in a cold house
when you get home, nor will
you be forced to pay to heat a
home while no one is there.
The thermostat can also be
set in the summer to allow the
temperature in the home to
rise without automatically
triggering the air condition-
ing. When shopping for a dig-
ital thermostat, be sure to
purchase one that is compati-
ble with your HVAC system.
Otherwise, the thermostat
might not work properly.
Turn off the lights (and
change the bulbs!). Perhaps
the simplest way to conserve
energy around the house is to
turn off the lights in empty
rooms. It's easy for all resi-
dents of a home to turn on a

light when entering a room,
only to leave that room but
keep the lights on. But elec-
tricity used for lighting can
constitute as much as 10 per-
cent of a monthly utility bill.
How much of that electricity
is being used to illuminate
empty rooms? Get in the
habit of turning lights off
whenever you leave a room.
Though the savings here
might not be substantial,
turning off the lights will help
conserve energy.
In addition to turning off
the lights, be sure to use com-
pact fluorescent light bulbs,
or CFLs, instead of traditional
incandescent bulbs. CFLs
consume less energy, don't
give off nearly as much heat
as incandescent bulbs and can
last as long as 10,000 hours,
which is roughly 10 times as
long as the best incandescent
bulb.
Make use of nature.
Homeowners can also employ
their landscape to help con-
serve energy around the
house. A strategically planted
tree, for example, can shade a
room that is exposed to the
sun throughout the day. That
shade can make it cooler
inside the home, allowing res-
idents to stay cool inside
without having to rely too
heavily on their air condi-
tioning unit. During the win-
ter months, open the curtains
during the day to allow sun-
shine in, naturally adding a
few degrees to the home so
you won't have to crank the
temperature on the thermo-
stat. Homeowners hoping to
conserve energy around the
house can do so in a number
of ways without having to sac-
rifice comfort or luxury.

I
n my world, salad isnt
food. Salad comes with the
food. As comedian John
Pinette puts it, salad is a
promissory note that food will
soon arrive. When I see
salad, my most primal instinct
tells me that something good
is about to happen, but has
not happened yet. Having
said that, walking up to a
restaurant called Saladworks
Caf made me wonder how
full of a belly I would leave
with when all was said and
done.
To make a long story
short, I was wrong. Salad is
food and I left stuffed.
But lets back up. The
caf-style establishment offers
the comfortable ambiance
required for a nice meal as it
simultaneously emanates a
young fast-paced vibe; very
conducive to the style of food
served. As we took our seats
we were greeted by owner
Vinod Kapoor who indicated
that the Saladworks Caf line-
up includes much more than a
variety of salads and dressings,
but also features paninis, cia-
batta sandwiches, and soups.
Flipping through the menu I
was impressed by both the
breadth and depth presented.
We decided we would begin
with a salad, move on to a
soup and finish with a sand-
wich.
I selected the Bently
Salad, which includes ham,
turkey, swiss and hardboiled
egg. After asking Vinod what
dressing went well, he offered
me a taste of a Saladworks
original: Green Goddess. It is
essentially a ranch dressing
with garlic and loads of herbs.
I was sold on it, and even
requested extra to drench my
salad. My buddy ordered the
Buffalo Chicken Salad with
Bleu Cheese and found it to
be delicious. The creaminess
of the dressing mixed with the
crunchy lettuce and crispy
chicken all converged to
explode with flavor. Each
salad screamed freshness.
Vinod made it a point to
explain to us that all vegeta-
bles are fresh and are cut up
right in his kitchen.
Next was the soup. One
of the specials for the day was
the Italian Wedding Soup.
Being of Italian descent, I
couldnt bring myself to pass it
up. Im sure glad I didnt
because it was outstanding!
Small meatballs gave way to a
hearty broth with fresh veg-
etables. I couldve taken a
bath in it! It was even served
with a warm roll for dipping.
Now Im a pretty big guy and
it takes a lot of food to fill me
upbut at this point even
after just soup and salad, I was
already getting full.
Finally, our sandwiches
were brought out to cap off
the meal. My friend ordered a
Turkey Melt with bacon and
cheddar cheese. I didnt get to
try any of it mostly because he
wouldnt let me. Evidently it
was too delicious to give up
even one bite. My
Fajitalicious was quite the fla-
vor bomb as it mimicked the
Mexican Fajita and included
romaine lettuce and roasted
peppers on ciabatta bread.
Frankly, the size of the sand-
wich alone probably couldve
filled me up.
So heres what I learned:
If you ever find yourself need-
ing a speedy meal, remember
that quick service food doesnt
have to be greasy and
unhealthy. Stop in to
Saladworks for a delicious
salad or sandwich made with
only the freshest most whole-
some ingredients. Saladworks
also does catering for all types
of events. To learn more visit

I
n an era of over-the-top,
ultra-expensive birthday
parties whose extrava-
gance rivals lavish weddings,
some might find it invigorat-
ing to scale things down and
host a pool party.
A pool party is an ideal
way to host a birthday or other
special event without having
to do a lot of planning. All
that is typically needed is an
available pool and party par-
ticipants ready to have a good
time.
Many people mistakenly
think that a pool party is
something that can only be
done during the warm weath-
er. Actually, you can plan a
pool party any time of the
year. Many fitness gyms,
schools and scuba certifica-
tion locations open their
pools up to public parties.
Therefore, whether the event
is held in June or January,
chances are there is a pool
available that can accommo-
date the crowd.
One main advantage to a
pool party is that the pool is
the entertainment factor for
the guests. There's no need to
spend hours thinking up
games or other forms of enter-
tainment. Swimming, splash-
ing and jumping into the
water will keep many guests
occupied for hours. If you pre-
fer more structure, consider
relay races, diving games and
water volleyball.
Party preparation
Start with the invitations
when preparing the party.
Select a colored paper or pat-
tern that is reminiscent of
pool water. A vibrant aquama-
rine would fit the bill. Print
out a catchy phrase that
describes the upcoming event
(i.e., Jimmys Party is Bound
to be a Splash), and be sure to
remind guests to bring towels
and bathing suits. If you will
not have enough chairs for all
guests, ask them on the invite
to bring a beach chair as well.
Put together a selection
of music that evokes summer
fun or tropical locations.
There are bound to be compi-
lation playlists available for
purchase. An instrumental
steel drum album also would
be effective. Remember, this
pool party should look and
feel hot. Music will help set
that mood.
Tie decorations into the
theme. Purchase or rent
inflatable palm trees and
string lantern lights around
the party area, if possible.
Keep plenty of beach balls on
hand to toss around in or out
of the water. Table linens can
be purchased in bright hues to
match the blue, red and yel-
low strips of a beach ball. Be
sure to have plenty of fun pool
toys available, such as floats
and water guns. Have a few
extra pairs of eye goggles on
hand as well as sun block (if
the party is outdoors) in case
swimmers forgot their own.
Pool party food
Think about which foods to
serve at a pool party. Light,
finger foods are ideal because
they won't sit heavily in
guests stomachs. Think
about tea sandwiches, fruit
and vegetable skewers, salads,
and shish kabobs, served along
with chips and dips. If the
party will be in the backyard,
barbecue fare also may be
quick and easy, especially if
there are a good number of
guests.
Create a number of trop-
ical-inspired beverages.
Anything with the taste of
melon, mango and pineapple
would fit in with the theme.
Serve the same types of frozen
nonalcoholic drink varieties
so everyone can enjoy a taste.
Finger foods reduce the
amount of cutlery and dishes
needed and that amounts to a
faster clean-up.
One of the final factors
of pool-party food is the
dessert. Look to individually
served desserts that can be
eaten by hand. Opt for cup-
cakes with blue frosting and a
gummy fish on top. Ice cream
cone sundaes are ideal on

Pool party safety
When hosting a pool
party, emphasize safety.
Remember, a person can
drown in just a few inches of
water in a matter of minutes.
According to Kids Health,
drowning is the second most
common form of death from
injuries among kids under the
age of 14.
Here are some precau-
tions to take when hosting a
pool party.
Designate a life guard. If
your party is at a public pool,
ensure a lifeguard will be on
duty. This person should not
leave his or her post unless
someone else relieves them.
Designate a lifeguard at a pri-
vate party as well, even hiring
an off-duty lifeguard if no
guests can perform the neces-
sary duties.
Make sure fences around
the pool are tall enough to
prevent accidental falls into
the pool and that they are
secured with self-latching
gates.
Insist that children who
cannot swim use a Coast
Guard-approved life vest or
another approved flotation
device. Inflatable water wings
are not effective against
drowning.
Be sure no one pushes or
jumps on others in and
around the pool.
Limit the number of pool
floats in the water so that vis-
ibility of the lifeguard will
not be impaired.
Don't let anyone chew gum
or eat in the pool. It can lead
to choking.
Don't allow running around
the perimeter of the pool.
Jumping and diving should
be prohibited if the water is
too shallow.
Make sure guests know to
follow the pool rules or they
wont be allowed to swim.
A pool party is a surefire
way to have a fun event any
time of the year. It is easy to
plan and host and guests will
walk away with many fond
memories.

henever I try a
new Asian restau-
rant, I feel the
need to spread the word.
There is something about
Asian food in the New
York Metropolitan Area
that gives it an almost
cult-like following.
Whether its the best
sushi, General Tsos
Chicken or Pad Thai,
youve just got to tell
everybody. And once
youve heard about it,
youve just got to try it. So
here goes: Theres a new Asian
Restaurant in Wayne called
Blossom Asian Bistro and I
loved itGO TRY IT!
I love Asian food, but to
be fair, I find myself trapped by
my own palette of the same old
dishes and rolls. What is
incredible about Blossom
Asian Bistro is that they make
it almost impossible to stick to
the same old. They take clas-
sic Japanese, Chinese and
Thai dishes and make them
into something truly one-of-a-
kind by adding an explosive
flair of their own. Proof of this
lies in the fact that through
the entire meal I never used
soy sauce once. Now if you
know me and my salty crav-
ings, you know thats quite
hard to believe. But Blossom
creates such savory sauces to
accompany their sushi rolls;
soy sauce is almost an insult to
the very integrity of the dish!
Take the Mirage Roll for
instance. As a newcomer, the
menus description of the
Mirage Roll led me to believe I
would be served a simple
shrimp and avocado roll.
What I actually enjoyed (no
savored) was indeed a shrimp
and avocado roll; however it
was presented quite differently
than I was used to. It
came delicately wrapped
in a pink soy paper and
seaweed, topped with the
chef s special baked
sauce. Bathed in this deli-
cious warm sauce, the
Mirage Roll was an
absolute winner. Taking
it up a notch in the cre-
ative department was the
Angry Lobster Roll. Creamy
and sweet with another amaz-
ing sauce laid atop, I cant
imagine why its called an
angry roll. This masterpiece
made my taste buds sing.
Beyond the sushi are
dozens of Pan-Asian dishes
that absolutely blew me away.
I tasted a baked mussel I cer-
tainly wont soon forget, a
Crispy Thai Snapper that was
D
irector Tim Burton
has seemed to be
MIA for the past two
years since the release of his
2010 blockbuster Alice in
Wonderland, but this sum-
mer he returns with three
movies to make up for his lost
time on the screen. Burtons
first of the three films is Dark
Shadows, which is based on the
hit 1960s soap opera of the
same name.
Dark Shadows tells the
story of Barnabas Collins
(Johnny Depp), an affluent
young man living during the
1700s. Barnabas is obsessed
over by one of the familys ser-
vants, Angelique, who is deter-
mined to win Barnabas love
and affection. However,
Barnabas refuses Angelique
and pursues a woman name
Josette. Out of jealousy and
anger, Angelique, who is also a
witch, kills Barnabas parents,
his lover, and finally, turns him
into a vampire and reports him
to the townspeople. Barnabas is
locked up and buried in a coffin
where he remains for 200 years
until a construction crew acci-
dentally digs him up in the year
1972. The story then picks up
with Barnabas trying to accli-
mate to the 1970s.
Dark Shadows features
some great visuals and an inter-
esting style of a gothic horror
film. It also features a star filled
cast including Johnny Depp
and Michele Pfieffer.
Unfortunately, it lacks much
more. The storyline progresses
slowly and seems to forgo any
true depth. The film is a dark
comedy, but all the funny
lines have already been
revealed in the previews
(most of the humor comes
from Barnabas trying to take
in the 1970s). Ultimately,
Dark Shadows was a disap-
pointment. After anticipat-
ing another Depp and Burton
collaboration, I had high
expectations for the film. The
beginning of the movie starts
off promising, but it fails to go
anywhere after that. The audi-
ence is left with a dragged out
story that was uninteresting
and simply not entertaining.
Hopefully, Burtons next two
films, Abraham Lincoln
Vampire Hunter and
Frankenweenie, will be able to
make up for Dark Shadows.

unbelievable, and I was
absolutely delighted by
Blossoms version of Beef
Negamaki. If youve never had
Beef Negemaki, dont try it
anywhere else but Blossom. In
a shell of rib eye steak soaked
in teriyaki, chefs stuff the roll
with green onions as the tradi-
tion of the dish requires. They
then take it a step further (the
Blossom Way as Im beginning
to notice) and add mushrooms
to truly bring the taste home.
Grilled, seared, and always
fresh; this classic dish just
explodes with flavor!
Managing partner Stacy
was absolutely thrilled to have
us. It was beyond an excite-
ment to show why her product
is valuable; she genuinely
wanted to serve us and see us
leave full and content. While
we were seated at the sushi
bar, it was clear that the
restaurant was spacious with
delicate Asian tones that fos-
tered a classy yet relaxing
atmosphere that is great for
families and adults alike.
There is even a private room
for parties and gatherings.
Fathers Day is nearly here and
many of us have graduates in

I had, I was about ready to
