Before going to get a laser treatment, make sure you research the topic, pros and cons thoroughly. Laser Hair removal is not advised for dark skin tones because of the very strong possibility of burning and scarring. Wax removal, twizzing and other methods are especially advised for dark skin tones. So before you hit the clinic for treatments, be sure to get all your facts and information correct. Going with the tide of anything goes in Nigeria, ask questions. Is the provider a certified dermatologist or cosmetologist? I did not see any mention of that in the article above. Are you the king of certifications destined to make your family members certified by default? Tobechdaniel has a valid point. A consultant at a laser centre outside Nigeria said exactly that to me that my skin tone was too dark so I was surprised no one said that to me at Priscillas. Its actually confusing because if its true it means a significant portion of Nigerians shouldnt do it as Im not a particularly dark Nigerian. On the other hand I know a few people with my skin tone whove done it at Priscillas with no problems whatsoever. Link

Nike July 6, 2012 at 2:30 PM I have done laser before (not in Nigeria) and I am not fair skinned. I did not get scarred and have no adverse stories to tell. I do know that there is a specific laser for darker skinned women. So maybe it is better to say that before dark skinned women get the laser they should do research and make sure that the operator has the right equipment for their skin tone. Reply Link

Madam the Madam July 6, 2012 at 3:10 PM Laser hair removal works on people with dark hair/if your hair contrasts well against your skin. If you are white with blonde hair, it wont work. If you have red hair, it wont work. As per burning/scarring, it depends on the type of laser that she uses. There are so many different ones nowYAG, Lightsheer, Gentle lase plus etc. Like Tobechi said, ask questions and do research. It is an expensive procedure but around these parts there are a lot of specials on Livingsocial and Groupon. Hopefully, they have specials in Naija. Reply Link

ice diva July 6, 2012 at 11:51 AM @tobechidaniel u should plz do ur own research before posting, I have never heard or has it been proven that laser is not good for black skin types. let me correct u plz there are two types of laser machines one for white skin and the other for black skin. the one for white skin was the first to come out and wasnt good for black skin but laser for black and asian skin type is out since the 90s and doesnt cause any problems at all. all the advice u gave for hair removal is only for people that dont suffer from razor bumps due to having sensetive skin. so i can assure u that as a customer to her lagos branch i did my research and her machine is the one for black and asian skin type and does not cause any scarring. be sure of wat u say plz. Let me say that i am igbo and dont know the owner of the spa personally so no advert intended. Reply Link

I had chicken pox n measles wen I was a kid n I gues I scratched n ended up avn spots, n also I av very sensitive skin, a tiny scratch bcoms usually ends up very dark, altho I av done a couple of body peels. Im lukn 4d best n permanent solution 2 gettn rid of my spots. Thanks Reply Link

cupcakes July 11, 2012 at 3:58 PM Ally u ned microdermasion or peels not laser.av u tried using dudu osun or any other black soap.do you also exfoliate your skin by using xfoliating bathing soaps?try these.Laser is for hair reduction not permanent hair removal. For all those arguing with tobechi,i have done 6 laser treatments and it was not that effective.Besides it is not meant for black people whether fair or dark.This is because of the melanin underneath our skin. And please LADIES DO NOT LASER YOUR FACE OR ELSE YOU WOULD HAVE BEARDS!!!I am a talking from experience.Instead go for electrolysis.It is the only method for permanent hair removal.I am also thinking of specialising in that field and bringing it to Nigeria because I no alot of women need it. queenhannah July 12, 2012 at 6:45 PM Or, if you have unwanted hair, buy and use hair removal cream or a shaving razor/shaving stick as we call it in naija. Always use a shaving cream to soften hair and prevent pulling the hair which causes ingrown hair. better yet, use the razor sticks that have shaving cream around the blades. if you have pimple & dark spots, use oil-free/non-commedogenic products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid daily. or coat your face with mix milk, pawpaw & honey twice a day allow to dry for 20-30mins, wash off and rub lemon/lime juice. be patient and consistent and results will marvel you. ask cleopatra If you have dry skin, mayonnaise and avocado pear is your best friend To exfoliate your skin, use our well trusted black stone(this ones we always used to wash our feet back in the days). saturate your body with olive oil or coconut oil or sheer butter allow to soak in for 10 mins, using black soap and stone, wash off, scrubbing your body in a circular motion with the stone. For dull skin, consider changing your food habit, stay away from oily & fried food, sugary drinks, carbohydrate. Eat lots of fiber, fruits and vegetables , drink water, green & white tea. And stay happy, laugh more and hate less- emotional stress causes wrinkles and hyper -pigmentation. Good luck saving your money. You are welcome Reply Link
