ABOUT ACUMEN FUND INDIA

The Impact ZHL operates 772 ambulances in six states across India. The companys ambulances have served over one million patients till date. The Challenge Cities lack reliable ambulance or emergency medical response services. The poor suffer disproportionately from the lack of these services because they face greater transportation challenges but have lesser means to pay. The Innovation ZHL is the first private sector ambulance company in India to provide service to people of all income levels. The company operates 24/7 call centres with ambulance tracking systems and each ambulance has personnel trained in basic and advanced life support. The Investment 2007: $1.5m Equity 2009: $1.2m Equity/Debt

The Impact Farmers have purchased more than 330,000 drip irrigation systems from GEWP & IDE-I, increasing crop yields by 30-70%. The Challenge Approximately 100 million Indian smallholders live on less than one dollar a day. Low crop yields and a single harvest each year make it impossible for them to earn their way out of poverty. Modern irrigation technologies have catered to large farmers with fields of four hectares or larger, with no affordable solution for small farmers. The Innovation In 2003, Acumen Fund deployed capital to IDE India, a designer and supplier of low-cost drip irrigation for rural farmers. GEWP, the forprofit spin off of IDE-I, is focused on achieving scale in the availability of low-cost irrigation technologies to smallholder farmers. The Investment 2008: $1.0m Equity

The Impact LifeSpring has grown from one hospital in 2007 to 12, has delivered over 10,000 babies and handled more than 200,000 outpatient visits. The Challenge More than 100,000 women die in India each year from pregnancy-related causes. The public healthcare systems provision of maternity services is often inadequate. Private hospitals offer better care, but are prohibitively expensive for the poor. The Innovation LifeSpring Hospitals is a chain of maternity hospitals that provides affordable, high-quality care to low-income indiduals. A joint venture between Acumen Fund and Hindustan Latex Limited, it aims to increase hospital-supervised births and reduce maternal and child mortality and morbidity rates. The Investment 2007: $1.9 m Equity

The Impact Husk Power Systems 80 power plants serve 200,000 people in Bihar with safe, clean, and renewable power. The Challenge In rural India, 56% of households lack access to electricity. In poor states like Bihar, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh, 80 to 90% of households are un-electrified. Rural Indians rely on kerosene lanterns for household light, which is expensive and destructive to health and the environment. The Innovation HPS was founded to bring electricity to the 20,000 villages deemed out of reach by the Indian government. The company uses discarded rice husks to fire generators linked to inexpensive mini-grids to bring electricity to villages in Indias rice belt. The ash from the process is further used to produce incense sticks, providing an additional source of income to the women in the community. The Investment 2009: $375K Debt
