Seek advice on transfer from your academic advisor during your first semester, or as soon as possible after earning 15 credits.
Consider joining your Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Membership could increase your chances for scholarships. Keep your grades up. Most transfer scholarships will require a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
Choose, as early as possible, the institution to which you wish to transfer and your intended major program. Request catalog, application, and transfer information from four-year colleges and universities. Make use of ARTSYS, a computerized method of determining the transferability of your courses. Map out your coursework in accordance with the recommended transfer program. Begin searching for scholarshipsuse online resources. Dont forget to check for Maryland State grants at www.mhec.state.md.us. Visit the four-year institutions of your choice; arrange a campus tour and speak to an admissions counselor. Complete and mail the application form with the application fee before the colleges deadline. Apply for institutional scholarships from your transfer college. Continue other scholarship searches. Request all transcripts (high school and all colleges attended) and send them to the transfer colleges. You will also need to request a final copy of your transcript from HCC after you have completed all required coursework. Complete and send the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 for the following academic year. Available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Make an appointment with the department advisor at your chosen transfer college to discuss your major and plan your course of study. Participate in your college's orientation program. You may be required to take placement tests at your transfer institution. These are often given during orientation.

Credit Hour: One semester hour of credit is awarded for a minimum of 15 hours (50 minutes each) of actual class time; for 30 hours of laboratory time; or for 45 hours of instructional situations such as practice, internships, and cooperative education placements. Native Student: A student whose initial college enrollment was at a given institution of higher education and who has not ever transferred to another institution. Receiving Institution: The institution of higher education to which a transfer student currently desires to enroll or has enrolled. Recommended Transfer Program: A planned program of courses, including both general education and courses in the major, taken at a community college which is applicable to a Bachelors degree program at a receiving institution. Ordinarily, transfer credits are limited to half the Bachelors degree program requirements.
