The Transfer Scholarship Guide for Maryland Community College Students assists transfer students in identifying and obtaining

scholarships at four- year institutions. This guide is produced by the Maryland Community College Financial Aid Directors with support from Sallie Mae, Inc., and cooperation from the Office of Student Financial Assistance (Maryland Higher Education Commission), and Maryland Association of Community Colleges. The information in the guide was provided by fouryear institutions and is subject to change. If a school is not listed in the guide, contact the Admissions or Financial Aid Office at that school directly to ask about transfer scholarships.

The Maryland Community College Financial Aid Directors thank Sallie Mae, Inc. for the generous grant support that made this publication possible.

TRANSFER CHECKLIST
DATE COMPLETED ACTION COMMENTS

Seek advice on transfer from your academic advisor during your first semester, or as soon as possible after earning 15 credits.

Consider joining your Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Membership could increase your chances for scholarships. Keep your grades up. Most transfer scholarships will require a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
Choose, as early as possible, the institution to which you wish to transfer and your intended major program. Request catalog, application, and transfer information from four-year colleges and universities. Make use of ARTSYS, a computerized method of determining the transferability of your courses. Map out your coursework in accordance with the recommended transfer program. Begin searching for scholarshipsuse online resources. Dont forget to check for Maryland State grants at www.mhec.state.md.us. Visit the four-year institutions of your choice; arrange a campus tour and speak to an admissions counselor. Complete and mail the application form with the application fee before the colleges deadline. Apply for institutional scholarships from your transfer college. Continue other scholarship searches. Request all transcripts (high school and all colleges attended) and send them to the transfer colleges. You will also need to request a final copy of your transcript from HCC after you have completed all required coursework. Complete and send the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 for the following academic year. Available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Make an appointment with the department advisor at your chosen transfer college to discuss your major and plan your course of study. Participate in your college's orientation program. You may be required to take placement tests at your transfer institution. These are often given during orientation.

Electronic Tool for Transfer Students

ARTSYS is a computerized data information system which informs students and advisors at a community college about the transferability of each community college course. In addition to providing information on course transferability, the program provides, in community college course numbers, the recommended courses for transfer to specific programs of study at participating four-year institutions. With the ARTSYS program, students enter their transcripts into the system to determine the transferability of their courses to one or more institutions. For information, contact the transfer advisor on your community college campus.
