HTS Triax Superconducting Cable

MORE POWER TO MORE PEOPLE

HtS triax

HTS Triax Superconducting Cable is Southwires unique and proprietary cable design. The Triax cable locates the three electrical phases and neutral conductor concentrically on a single core. This design drastically reduces material usage and cooling requirements of the system, and therefore cost. Applications for this advanced technology address right of way and substation congestion constraints in many of todays urban environments.

compact deSignS HTS Triax allows for a retrofit of existing underground pipe and duct systems to increase power delivery, as well as reduced substation footprint in dense urban areas. eliminate emF HTS Triax cable is fully shielded. tHermal independence From SUrroUnding enVironment HTS cables utilize high performance thermal insulation to maintain operating temperatures of -200oC. This isolates the cable from the surrounding environment and eliminates the need to special back-fill. 5x cUrrent carrying capacity oF copper cableS HTS Triax operates at extremely high currents in normal, steady state conditions. enVironmentally Friendly cooling mediUm Liquid nitrogen cooling fluid is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. diStribUtion SUbStationS togetHer on lV Side oF tranSFormer HTS cables at MV can easily carry full station load (80-150 MW) at steady state operation. Benefits include increased asset utilization (share transformer capacity between distribution substations) and increased meshing of distribution grid in dense urban areas.

CONDUCTOR MATERIAL AND SIzE

Conductor material is a matter of both customer preference and required current carrying capacity Copper conductor common for larger loads When both copper and aluminum conductors can meet your requirements, the more economical solution will be a function of the metal and the cable component costs

69 kV power cables

INSULATION THICKNESS
For cables with a radial moisture barrier, Southwire Standard Wall reduced insulation thicknesses within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9 are recommended Cables referred to by Traditional Wall insulation (650 mils) follow the traditional insulation wall practice referenced in ICEA standard S-108-720 appendix F as still specified by a number of customers and utilities For applications requiring smaller cable diameters, specific designs are available upon request

SHEATH MATERIAL
Copper and aluminum corrugated sheaths offer the best mechanical and moisture protection for your HV cable, and copper will provide better short circuit performance and improved connectability Full wall cables with concentric neutrals are an economical option for mostly dry environments Composite laminate sheaths in both copper and aluminum that offer excellent protection against moisture ingress

JACKET
Standard outer jacket: extruded LLDPE with a co-extruded outer semi-conductive polyethylene layer for jacket integrity testing Halogen Free Fire Retardant (HFFR) compounds are available upon request for installations in cable trays and ventilated troughs

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS: 115 KV POWER CABLE

25 26

CONDUCTOR MATERIAL AND SIzE

Conductor material is a matter of both customer preference and required current carrying capacity Copper conductor common for larger loads When both copper and aluminum conductors can meet your requirements, the more economical solution will be a function of the metal and the cable component costs

115 kV power cables

INSULATION THICKNESS
For cables with a radial moisture barrier, Southwire Standard Wall reduced insulation thicknesses within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9 are recommended Cables referred to by Traditional Wall insulation (800 mils) follow the traditional insulation wall practice referenced in ICEA standard S-108-720 appendix F as still specified by a number of customers and utilities For applications requiring smaller cable diameters, specific designs are available upon request within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9

SHEATH MATERIAL
Copper and aluminum corrugated sheaths offer the best mechanical and moisture protection for your HV cable, and copper will provide better short circuit performance and improved connectability Composite laminate sheaths in both copper and aluminum that offer excellent protection against moisture ingress

JACKET
Standard outer jacket: extruded LLDPE with a co-extruded outer semi-conductive polyethylene layer for jacket integrity testing Halogen Free Fire Retardant (HFFR) compounds are available upon request for installations in cable trays and ventilated troughs

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS: 138 KV POWER CABLES

43 44

CONDUCTOR MATERIAL AND SIzE

Conductor material is a matter of both customer preference and required current carrying capacity Copper conductor common for larger loads When both copper and aluminum conductors can meet your requirements, the more economical solution will be a function of the metal and the cable component costs

138 kV power cables

INSULATION THICKNESS
For cables with a radial moisture barrier, Southwire Standard Wall reduced insulation thicknesses within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9 are recommended Cables referred to by Traditional Wall insulation (850 mils) follow the traditional insulation wall practice referenced in ICEA standard S-108-720 appendix F as still specified by a number of customers and utilities For applications requiring smaller cable diameters, specific designs are available upon request within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS: 161 KV POWER CABLE

61 62

CONDUCTOR MATERIAL AND SIzE

Conductor material is a matter of both customer preference and required current carrying capacity Copper conductor common for larger loads When both copper and aluminum conductors can meet your requirements, the more economical solution will be a function of the metal and the cable component costs

161 kV power cables

INSULATION THICKNESS
For cables with a radial moisture barrier, Southwire Standard Wall reduced insulation thicknesses within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9 are recommended For applications requiring smaller cable diameters, specific designs are available upon request within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS: 230 KV POWER CABLES

71 72

CONDUCTOR MATERIAL AND SIzE

Conductor material is a matter of both customer preference and required current carrying capacity At 230 kV, copper is most common When both copper and aluminum conductors can meet your requirements, the more economical solution will be a function of the metal and the cable component costs

230 kV power cables

INSULATION THICKNESS
For cables with a radial moisture barrier, Southwire(SW) Standard Wall reduced insulation thicknesses within AEIC specification CS9 are recommended For applications requiring smaller cable diameters, cables with reduced insulation thickness are available upon request within the stress limits in AEIC specification CS9

Components
Silicone rubber is a preferred material for cable accessories due to its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. For more than 40 years, silicone has been used successfully as high-quality electrical insulation for voltages up to 400 kV. Silicone rubber features high quality electrical insulation, superior corona and tracking resistance, combined with high elasticity. It facilitates multi range application, where one silicone rubber body can be used for various conductor cross sections. Optimal flexibility ensures easy assembly of the accessories. outstanding features of the silicone rubber insulation material are: UV and ozone resistance Durable water rejection Weather and aging resistance Non-flammable, self-extinguishing, heat resistant Applicable for use at temperatures between -50 C and +180 C High elasticity High tracking resistance Unlimited storage life Friendly to the environment

Design Criteria
The specific electrical problems of the cable termination are found at the point between the high-grade solid electrical insulation of the cable and the gaseous insulation air, which has a significantly lower dielectric strength. In order to achieve sufficient insulating clearance, the outer conductive layer of the cable must be stripped to below the end of the core. This causes unacceptably high field intensities at the end of the outer conductive layer (figure 1) which must be eliminated by means of stress control. Figure 2 shows the field of the cable termination controlled capacitively by a funnel shaped electrode. It is dimensioned in such a way that field intensities do not exceed at any point. This prevents harmful partial discharge.
