From the MODERN LANGUAGE DEPT:
Summer Language Study / Home-stay / Travel Program to SPAIN
The ISM High School Modern Language Department is pleased to announce its Summer Language Study /
Home-stay / Travel Program to Spain from June 6th to July 4th 2009 for students aged 13 to 19 years old.
The program aims to develop students’ language proficiency and to broaden his/her cultural knowledge.
This program is being offered in cooperation with Escuela Internacional Madrid (TANDEM), a school in
Madrid and San Sebastian, Spain. Students will continue learning and, more importantly, will practice
Spanish through total immersion in the classes and during the home-stay. The school finds families for
students to stay with, assists in locating appropriate local resources for the group’s activities, plans
outings, maintains a list of local medical and emergency resources, and helps with the orientation for
group leaders.
The language course proposal is to have 4 class sessions (45 minutes each) of language and culture from
Monday to Friday, from 09.30 to 13.00 each day (with a break from 11.00 to 11.30). The classes will
include language and culture subjects as well as adequate preparation for the cultural visits. Students will
complete a placement test in order for the school to form groups based on the level of Spanish.
Last year, 15 students from ISM traveled to Spain and all of them reported dramatic improvements in
their acquisition of the Spanish language as well as outstanding experiences with their home-stay families
and one another during their time in Spain.
If you are interested in receiving more information about this summer course, please contact Laurie
Atilano or Samantha Ramos in the High School Office, or email Adriana Vargas at vargasa@ismanila.org.

From the Superintendent:
Dear Parents,
I want to speak to you about the personal security of student belongings here on campus. In a community
of 1900 students and 400 adults, inevitably, things go missing from time to time. Most of these items are
lost. Hundreds of items every month are brought to Lost and Found by our custodians and security guards
and many of these are never claimed. From time to time, though, the circumstances of the
disappearance of goods are such that we must assume that they must have been stolen. On average, we
have between three to five cases per month like this. Almost always, such thefts involve money and high
value electrical goods that have been left unsupervised by students and are taken because the
opportunity presents itself to a passer-by. Almost always, when we find a culprit, the person in question
is another student.
The school takes seriously its obligation to make this campus safe for students and their belongings. All
ES students have a cubbyhole in their classroom for their belongings. All Middle School and High School
students have lockers – in the changing rooms as well as in the corridors. We have security cameras in
high traffic areas, and our security guards collect bags that are abandoned and take them to the Security
Office. With all these measures in place, things should be secure; that they aren’t is usually because
students don’t show sufficient care and responsibility.
I do feel very strongly that, often unnecessarily, students bring to school large sums of money and
expensive electrical goods whose potential loss to the victim and gain to the culprit is significant. No
student needs to have thousands of pesos in a wallet in order to get through a school day. No student
needs to bring an iPod to school. No student needs to bring a PSP to school. I seriously doubt whether
students need to have $600 cell phones on campus rather than $20 cell phones. I do advise you as parents
to keep a close eye on what your children take to school and to caution them about the need to take
care of their belongings.
I should also like you to do something else. Recently, we had our first case of the “disappearance” of a
laptop computer when an Apple Mac Notebook went missing. To me, it is inconceivable that a student
could arrive home with a laptop computer that was not in his or her possession in the morning and not be
challenged by parents about where it came from. That same principle should surely apply to other high
value items. Please help us to stamp out incidences of theft by monitoring the possessions in your
children’s bedroom.
Of all the offenses that students can commit in schools, the one I have least sympathy for is theft from a
classmate. No student in our school can claim to be poor and therefore no one can justify stealing
because of “need”. You should know, and you should tell your child, that, depending on the nature of
the offense, the school will suspend or – much more likely - expel any student involved in this kind of
behavior.
Yours sincerely,
David Toze
