Zaragoza Felix Period 5 10/25/12 Industrial Revolution The controversy of the industrial revolution still goes on.

The industrial revolution took place in 1760-1850. Many people ask themselves was the outcome of the revolution good or bad. Yes the industrial revolution did have a few negative outcome however those negative outcomes are outweighed by the positive. The positive outcomes were new inventions, improvement of society and economy. The industrial revolution brought new inventions to society. Samuel Morse invented the telegraph, which was improved by Alexander Bell who made the telephone (Otto). Samuel Morse created a device that helped to communicate with others. Even though it took awhile since people had to remember a code in order to understand the message but, until Alexander took Samuels invention even further and created the telephone. This made peoples lives better for the fact that people didn't have to memorize a code and now could just simply just talk. The telephone helped politicians make their decisions faster, rather than have to wait weeks for the message to reach another person. It also help others warn people in the community if an attack were to happen. Furthermore a discovery was made by Henry Bessemer using the scientific process. He found the way to make iron into steel (Otto). Even though back before the discovery, steal was hard to find. Now that henry found a way to make more out of iron it made steel accessible to others, especially the ones that make the money. With more steel being made it increased the makings of railroads. Another creation made was by Thomas Edison, who created the light bulb (Otto). With edison creation we have advance from candles to light bulbs which means that we would have depended on the sun for light and tell when it was time to sleep

and call it a night. Now that we have the lightbulb people could start to have life at night. It also meant long hours of work which brought money and food on the table. The industrial revolution brought new creations which made the world better. During the industrial revolution there was improvement in society . In this time period president Teddy Roosevelt focus more on the people and how to make things better for the people. Teddy had pass down amendments or laws for the people. Amendment 17 states the people could choose their representatives (Otto). Now back before Roosevelt had became president and made it possible for people even have a say in their government the people were ignored. The only people that had a say in how things were run were those with a higher power or the wealthy. However with this law the power of how things were run in society was now depend on not just the wealthy but the rest of the people in society. This means that things have change form having only the wealthy decide to having the people deicide has well. It also reveals that Roosevelt believed in the social contract which basically means that people get to rid of their government if they feel that the government is validating their rights rather than protect them. This leads to the next amendment that Roosevelt had made. Amendment 19 states woman suffrage or the right to vote (Otto). Back then women were the only people that weren't allowed to vote . Even Though attempts were made to have womens voices heard, but they were turned away. For the fact that the women were considered inferior to males or patriarchy. However with this amendment women are now guaranteed the right to vote. With this change in history it means women are now taking a position in the political world. In addition it can give the women the possibility to run for president. for the fact the woman's power is growing stronger and stronger that we soon might not consider this world where man rule all thanks to this amendment. In the other hand the industrial revolution is known for bad working conditions and

child labor. However thanks to Roosevelt he end the tragedy. He made the Inspection act and pure food and drug act. As stated in the article of Pure Food and Drug Act it states At the turn of the 20th Century, Americas food was rotten. A good part of the reason for this were the filthy conditions in the slaughterhouses and packing houses, mostly in Chicago, where cattle and other livestock were butchered and processed for the consumer. There was no law permitting the federal government to inspect what could be likened to nothing less than charnel houses and to keep bad meat and other foods from crossing into other states. On June 30, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt, who, sickened by what he read, signed the Pure Food and Drug Act into law(Pure Food and Drug Act). This shows that the food and were they made the food was bad and even killed some of the people for it. It also reveals that Theodore was the only person who took action for what he readed. It shows that he cares for his people and their health. Without this act who knows we might have not exist or we would be slowly dieing but, thanks to this act we can eat without death waiting for that last bite. The industrial revolution brought improvement in society. The Industrial revolution increased the economy at this time. Before the industrial revolution the business were under the owner power and government were not involve. In other words society had laziefare. However in this time period it mark the end of laziefare.(Otto) This means that the government had more control in the companies. For the fact that many companies were losing money and wasting it more than gaining more. This also not only help companies stop losing money but also become successful. Even though some of the money being made went to the government. Furthermore it ties in with the natural resources because with the companies making large amount of the products they can ship to other states and have great business with others. As well as railroads also help with the economy in having products transported to make

money. In addition the taxes were fixed to be fair to all the people. For the fact that amendment 16 states based on income is how much one pays for the government (Otto). This means that the rich have to pay more taxes and the poor don't. This is fair for the fact that not everyone is from the same social class. Therefore it is reasonable that people must pay a certain amount because of how much one makes. Thus means that the middle class is treated fairly and not take advantage of or exploding them into pressure of having to pay high taxes. The industrial revolution brought a rise in economy. The industrial revolution introduce new inventions to the people, improve lives and boost the economy. However others would argue that the industrial revolution was a negative time period. In the world thanks to the industrial revolution we now have electricity. We also have the best food when we go out because of the inspection act and pure food and drug act that was established. Therefore the pain was worth to gain or else we would not have what we have today.
