December 2012
FROM THE PASTORS DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of The Hill United Presbyterian Church: The abiding and central truth of Christmas is that the Eternal God has come among us in the flesh. Of course, we call this gracious and amazing miracle the Incarnation. We call the Incarnate One, Jesus of Nazareth. According to the Angel of the Lord, as the angel made the birth announcement to the shepherds, the angel said,...I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all people! The angel then made three great Christian claims about Jesus: He is Savior from sin..., He is Lord of all life; He is Christ the Messiah of all people. As we celebrate Christmas, please remember our Christmas dinner at 6:00 P.M. on December 9, 2012, our Cantata on December 16, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. and our Christmas musical, Dude, You Hear What I Hear? at 7:00 P.M. also on December 16, 2012. December 23, 2012 at the 10:30 A.M. worship, we will have our Piano Orchestra. On Christmas Eve, we will have our Happy Birthday, Jesus service for children and families at 4:00 P.M. followed by the traditional Christmas Eve Candlelight service at 8:00 P.M. with musical preludes at 7:30 P.M. Yours for a Merry Christmas in Our Savior, Lord and Messiah, Jesus, Pastor Clark Rev. Clark T. Sawyer

The Deacons are once again sponsoring the Head Start Happy Holidays, and we would appreciate your help. The purpose of this project is to provide one Christmas gift for each of the thirtyfive students in two classes at the Head Start School where Arlene Roth teaches. Head Start is a low-income, federally-funded preschool with sites throughout Butler County. Although the families may be serviced through other community organizations, support is limited this year due to the economy of our region. Heres how you can help: Look for the Christmas tree on the bulletin board in the overflow room of the sanctuary from December 2 through December 16. Remove a gingerbread boy or girl from the tree and buy the present listed there that the child is dreaming of. Gifts are in the $20-$25 range. PLEASE be sure to put your NAME, PHONE NUMBER, and THE NUMBER FOUND ON THE GINGERBREAD MAN on the sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the overflow room. Place the gift in a gift bag (please do not wrap) with the gingerbread tag around the handle of the bag. Return the gift to the church by December 16. Place it on the desk in the Deacons room in the back upstairs hallway. If the door is locked, leave it in the church office. THANK YOU! If you have questions, please contact Arlene at 724 -282-6489 or Sharon Montag, Moderator of Deacons, at 724-285-3231. As always, Deacons appreciate the love you show to our community through your generous donations.

CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS WITH YOUR CHURCH FAMILY

Please join your church family at the annual Christmas dinner on December 9th at 6:00 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall. Following the dinner, the Grove City High School Show Choir, directed by Trevor Greenfield will perform, and the Hill Church Instrumental Ensemble, directed by Tommy Walters, will lead us in singing Christmas carols. Reservations are due by December 2nd. Please reserve the date and plan to celebrate with us this holiday season!

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS November 12, 2012

The Session is working on the Ministry and Mission Budget for 2013. The Session also adopted the suggestion of Worship and Discipleship that Hill Church hold the Saturday Evening Service only the first Saturday of the month in order to celebrate the Lords Supper. The time would be from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. in Fellowship Hall. Clark Sawyer, Moderator

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS
Dont forget to order your Christmas poinsettia this year! Order forms will be available on the Deacons table in midNovember. The greenhouse requires our that our entire order to be placed by December 10, so December 9th will be the last Sunday to turn in your order.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

St. Johns Reformed Church reported to the secretary of Hill Church on November 19, 2012 that 29 shoeboxes were reported to be collected from the Hill Church. If you were one of the 29 people that donated a shoebox full of Christmas joy for a needy boy or girl, we thank you!

KEEP ME WARM CHRISTMAS TREES

The Willing Workers are currently accepting warm winter clothing to display on and around our Keep Me Warm Christmas trees. Mittens, gloves, scarves, caps, sweaters, jackets, coats, and other new or gently used articles are needed. They will be distributed to local organizations. With the economy as it is, we realize that the need is great. The Willing Workers are continually looking for new members. We meet the first and third Thursday morning from 9:30-11:30. Gloria Miller always has something to keep us busy. We invite you to join us in the fellowship we enjoy while we work. We thank the congregation for their help with our projects throughout the year.

SOME YEAR END REMINDERS FROM THE STEWARDSHIP AND MISSION SUPPORT COMMITTEE
The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee wants to thank everyone for sharing their time, talents and treasure throughout 2012 in support of the mission and ministries of Hill Church. As we wrap up the current year and prepare for 2013 we would like to share these helpful tips: December 31 is the deadline for receipt of any offerings to be included in the 2012 financial statements of Hill Church and on the final individual giving statements mailed to our donors. All checks and donations must be dated on or before December 31, 2012 and received in the church office by noon of that date. Boxes of offering envelopes for 2013 will be labeled and set out on tables in the overflow area of the church. You may pick up your box of offering envelopes anytime between December 16 and December 30, 2012. Boxes of envelopes that have not been picked up by December 30th will be mailed. A number of members have asked about the first envelope in the box entitled Initial Offering. Money received through the Initial Offering is used to help offset the cost of purchasing boxes of offering envelopes and if necessary mailing those boxes. Please note that it is likely that your offering envelope number will change each year. Please remember to use your new offering envelopes beginning on Sunday, January 6, 2013 so that Jennifer can properly credit your offering on your giving statements.

NEWS FROM THE GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE

The task force gives thanks to God for Jennifer Huba, who recently resigned from the group due to returning to teach school. We appreciated her presence and her contribution. If the Spirit would so move you, consider joining this task force. We could use one or two additional members. This recent e-mail note to the task force from Hanson Dzamefe, Catechist at Bethel-Darkumen, and who runs a school in his church said; Hello. Many thanks for your efforts, personally and collectively in assisting young women in further education. This will in no small way build our women to become strong and effective leaders in the church. Extend God's blessing to all donors on our behalf. I shall give you a praise report later. God Bless you.....Hanson Christmas greetings were again sent to the Bubiasihe District. We hope that you took this opportunity to sign the cards and wish our Ghanaian friends Christmas greetings. It was interesting and joyful to recently observe the Kids Club young participants contribute to the Ghana scholarship fund. They put quarters and dollar bills into the basket and were delighted and excited to do so. When asked, they understood the purpose of this mission project. In looking ahead to the 2013 scholarship season, consider doing just what these young people did. It is easy to set aside a dollar each day or to daily dump your pocket or purse coins into a jar or box. After a period of time you will have a sufficient amount gathered in to then write a check to the Hill Church for the scholarship fund. Another thought would be to make a Christmas donation to the fund instead of some material gift for one or more family members or friends. Some contributions have already been sent in. The Task Force appreciates any and all considerations given to assist these young women. Please keep the Bubiashie District churches in your prayers. ~Jim Ihlenfeld for the Mission Task Force

2013 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops. Proverbs 3:9 The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee would like to thank the members of the Hill Church family of faith for generously pledging their time, talent and treasure during our 2013 stewardship emphasis. To date Hill Church has received 97 pledges totaling $202,584. If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you can support the work of Hill Church through the sharing of your time, talent and treasure. Once you have decided how to support the mission and ministries of Hill Church, please complete the pledge form that came with your stewardship message and return it in the envelope provided. You may return your pledge form by mailing it to the church office or placing it in the offering plate during worship. If you have misplaced your stewardship letter and pledge form please contact Jennifer at the church office and another one will be sent to you.

CHANCEL CHOIR CANTATA

Our Chancel Choir and the Hill Youth Chorale will lead our 10:30 A.M. worship on Sunday, December 16, 2012 by presenting the Cantata, Child of Peace. A specially formed orchestra made up of Hill Church instrumentalists, Butler music teachers and Westminster College students, under the direction of Tommy Walters, will join Peg McGuirk to the accompany the Cantata. This ensemble will also provide prelude music prior to the service. Please invite friends, neighbors and relatives to join us for this very special worship service!

A Note of Thanks ~ I want to extend my deepest thanks to my many friends from Hill Church who supported me throughout the year as I battled breast cancer. I am happy to report that all my treatments are complete and my follow-up tests are clean. The cards and notes that you sent me really lifted my spirits as did knowing that I was in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your love and support. Pat Brennen

Thanks to everyone who made soup, donated money and helped with the Butler Symphony House Tour Luncheon on Saturday, November 17. The soup was delicious and everyone enjoyed the salad bar. Everything went very well and the music provided by the HYC was a highlight of the noon time lunch. They also did a remarkable job serving the soup and clearing the tables. Everyone commented about the good job they were doing. You should be very proud of them. A special thanks to Kathy Sawyer and Lin and Bill Ellis and Jennifer Gilliland for all their extra work. So many mothers and grandmothers helped in the kitchen and a big thanks to them too. Also thanks to Bill and Tommy Walters for their extra help. It was a great day and this church should be proud to have been a part of making it all happen. Peg McGuirk

November 13, 2012 Dear Rev. Sawyer Thank you for the boatload of food your congregation delivered to Covenant Cupboard yesterday. Not only did your people collect the food, deliver the food, and carry it into the cupboard, they sorted it. The donation of bags of apples and potatoes are especially welcome. We do not have a facility to store such items for extended periods, but we gave out a few yesterday and the rest will be given out on Thursday. The continuing support of Hill Church for Covenant Cupboard over the years is very important. On behalf of the people who receive the food and the volunteers who distribute the foodTHANK YOU! David C. Blewett, Manager

Hill United Presbyterian Church Thank you so very much for your generous donation of $300.00. Habitat not only appreciates your financial support, but also your support with Gift Wrapping, and your faithful prayers. Your church is a blessing to our organization. Habitat for Humanity Butler County

CHRISTMAS JOY OFFERING

Again this year, as we have done for many years, we will have a Christmas Joy Offering. We will forward the offerings collected to the denomination for use by the Board of Pensions for assistance to our retirees and by the Racial Ethnic and Womens Ministries of the General Assembly Council to support Presbyterian racial ethnic education. Collection of the Christmas Joy Offering will be made during worship services conducted in the Advent season, including our Christmas Eve services. Let us give generously in this time of joy and giving. The Christmas Joy Offering is one of five denominational offerings that our Church participates in each year. In 2011, undesignated gifts to the Christmas Joy Offering were distributed equally to the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions and to support student scholarships at the following Presbyterianrelated racial ethnic schools and colleges: Barber-Scotia College, Concord, NC Cook Native American Ministries, Tempe, AZ Knoxville College, Knoxville, TN Menaul School, Albuquerque, NM Presbyterian Pan American School, Kingsville, TX Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, AL In 2011, the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions was able to support the households of active and retired church workers and their families with 291 income supplements, 128 shared grants, 4 emergency assistance grants, and 251 housing supplements. The family of faith at Hill U.P. presented offerings totaling $1,545.00 in 2011. Our offering goal this year is $1,450.00. Celebrate the birth and life of Jesus Christ through participation in this special offering!
