A Bit of Huron Big Hit For Holiday Gift Giving

By Sheila ehrhardt Huronites who are looking for a unique, meaningful gift for that special someone need go no further than the Huron Chamber of Commerce offices at 509 Huron St. Many different types of Huron memorabilia can be found there, along with unusual gifts created by local artisans, and even books by local authors. The Chamber office, located in the site of the former Wileswood Country Store, is a magnet for summer visitors, due to the rich memories people have of the penny candy, popcorn and a chance to take a twostep into the past. With this large volume of foot traffic, the Chamber began offering its members the opportunity to sell their wares there. The tradition has grown tremendously in the past several years. There are several sizes of the new Huron photo collage, the 2012 Chamber Christmas ornament which commemorates the Pied Pipers 60th anniversary and a series of DVDs produced by the Huron Historical Society spotlighting Hurons Urban Renewal project and the legacy of the Huron ore docks. Many local artisans have displays of stained glass window decorations and custom-made jewelry, with many pieces using beach glass and lucky stones. Pen and ink sketches by the late Robert Hilty are available in notecards and matted prints. Several mystery books by Rob Smith, use Huron locations throughout the narrative and Dave Brown has written a comprehensive history of Hurons football program. They make for an exciting winter read. Graphic artist and photographer Jennifer Kilbury shot the photos used in the Huron collage and has created two very unusual new postcards. The iconic Huron Lighthouse also adorns embroidered hand and tea towels. Make the Huron Chamber office your one-stop shop for unique holiday gift items. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Another Great Year for Girls Night Out

Doug and Gretchen Studer and their many volunteers can satisfactorily close the books on yet another great Girls Night Out charity event. This annual event began in 2005 and was held at the former IAB Club in Sandusky. This first year, there were only 420 ladies in attendance, and $4,800 was raised. The Girls Night Out 2012, which was held on November 14 at Kalahari Resort Convention Center, set some records. Over 1,600 ladies were in attendance, an increase of 400 over last years attendance. The 2012 event raised $50,000 for local charities including Cancer Services of Erie County, the Fisher Titus Mammography Fund, the Firelands Regional Medical Center Cancer Program Fund, and the North Coast Cancer Foundation. This is the same amount that was raised last year, but this year there was no motorcycle raffle. Last year, the motorcycle raffle alone raised $17,000. This worthwhile event will continue again next year. The tentative date for the Girls Night Out 2013 is Thursday, November 13. More details will follow at a later date.

Photo by Sheila ehrhardt Many unusual gift items that display the charm and character of Huron are available at the Chamber of Commerce offices.

Fisher-Titus to Host Worksite Wellness Event

Area businesses are invited to a Workplace Wellness Luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. at the Fisher-Titus Medical Center Auditorium, 272 Benedict Avenue, Norwalk. Fisher-Titus will be providing a heart-healthy lunch during this free event and attendees will be introduced to several of the American Heart Associations workplace wellness programs, including My Life Check, and How to Become a Fit-Friendly Worksite. Persons wishing to attend, should RSVP to Emily.hawkins@heart.org or 419740-6167 by Monday, Dec. 3. Physical activity and employee wellness are important priorities at Fisher-Titus. We are honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite and are eager to share our approach with local companies, said Lorna Strayer, executive vice president at Fisher-Titus. According to Emily Hawkins, director, Great River Affiliate of the American Heart Association, the Fit-Friendly Worksites program is a catalyst for positive change in the American workforce by helping worksites make their employees health and wellness a priority. The Fit-Friendly Worksites Program offers a unique, easy-to-implement opportunity for corporations to increase employees physical activity, which will help improve their health and their employers bottom line, said Hawkins. During our luncheon, representatives from Fisher-Titus will share how they have implemented wellness programs at the medical center. American employers are losing an estimated $225.8 billion a year because of health-care expenses and health-related losses in productivity and those numbers are rising, according to the Heart Association. Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs. Their lack of regular physical activity raises their risk for a host of medical problems, such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Employers face $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to obesity alone.

McCormick Junior High Sends Two Teams to Land Use Debate

On Friday, December 7, 2012 McCormick Junior High School will be well represented in the Erie County 8th Grade Land Use Debate. Two teams of McCormick students have been selected to move on to compete at the county level and present their land use projects to a panel of judges. This years Land Use Debate focuses on the former Con Agra property along the Huron River. Team One is prepared to present with confidence a new idea that will capture the attention of many. This is our hometown, we know it inside and out, stated Cassie Battiste. (Specific project details intentionally withheld until following the debate.) The property is prime real estate. We wanted to make sure our idea had class, explained Molly Lehrer. We are representing our school with a great idea. Team Twos approach was slightly different in that they weighed the pros and cons to come up with their idea, explained Augie Beckman. In their research and planning they issued a District wide survey and reached out to Vice Mayor, Mr. Brad Hartung and City Manager Mr. Andrew White as resources. Bennett Arthur of Team Two commented on the whole project being a great experience that really came together at the end. They are very proud of how it turned out and to been competing on the county level. All of the students have worked very hard and utilized their time and resources very well on this project. Mrs. Sherry Rowen and Mrs. Amy Brown have also put forth a great deal of time and energy in working with the students, explained Mr. Chad Carter, Principal of McCormick. I look forward to seeing how McCormick compares to other Districts as this is our first time participating in the Land Use Debate. The project began back on October 3rd when 8th grade students from around Erie County had the opportunity to listen to an advisory panel comprised of Huron City Manager, Andy White, Erie County Planning, Tim King, City of Sandusky Planning, Carrie Handy, Economic Development Consultant, Greg Sherman and Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Brenda Culler. Following the presentations of this panel the students began the development of their Land Use project. Each school district participating in the competition has the opportunity to forward their top two teams to the county level on Friday.
