Student art connects with curriculum
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Mt. Laurel Sun
For the second year in a row,
some of Diane Canzaneses
Larchmont Elementary School
students artwork has been hang-
ing near masterpieces in the
Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The exhibit, in the museum
since Nov. 28, will be on display in
the educator corridor through
Dec. 16.
According to museum officials,
the ongoing exhibit, Education
in Action: Art and Nature, show-
cases work from both childrens
art classes and the VAST (Visual
Arts as Sources for Teaching)
summer institute, in which Can-
zanese had participated.
Thirteen students from Mt.
Laurel, eight in third-grade and
five in fourth-grade, crafted vi-
brant leaf or tree projects, Can-
zanese said.
At Larchmont, the third-grade
field trip each year is to the muse-
um, she said, which promotes the
excitement the kids in the exhibit
have been feeling.
Canzanese makes connections
in curriculum through her art
classes, and each school year,
there is a new emphasis.
Art isnt just a separate enti-
ty, she said, but is connected
with other areas of the curricu-
lum.
At last years exhibit, which
saw a high turnout, students fo-
cused on pinpointing similarities
in art and language skills, she
said.
According to Museum Educa-
tor and Coordinator of Teacher
Programs, Rebecca Mitchell, it is
a confidence booster for students
who have their work on display
and gives them a sense of pride
while validating their work as im-
portant and inspirational.
The show really highlights
work that was done by students of
teachers who have participated in
our summer institute, said
Mitchell.
Canzanese was a teacher who
was involved in the week-long
VAST program, Mitchell said,
which included learning about
the galleries, spending time with
curators and being involved in
hands-on workshops, all the while
opening the door to the student
opportunity at the museum.
Being featured two years in a
row is a testament to the type of
teacher Canzanese is, said
Mitchell.
She really takes advantage of
opportunities that are out there
for her students, she said.
Canzanese took inspiration
from Monet, brought that into the
classroom, and submitted art-
work for display, Mitchell ex-
plained.
Through three fall projects, the
students have used different tech-
niques to craft their creations.
The most fun lesson, Can-
zanese said, was when the stu-
dents from both grade levels went
outside to draw.
They had the choice of two dif-
ferent trees and they drew the
trees as they saw them.
In their next lesson, the stu-
dents created a sunset watercolor
silhouette with the tree colored in
dark crayon.

Elauwit Medias annual drive to aid animal shelters and
rescue groups is underway. Shelters always are looking for dog
and cat food, cat litter, cleaning supplies (especially bleach),
office supplies, gift cards, blankets, bedding and, of course,
this being the holiday season and all, treats and toys.
The drive runs through December 17th, so dont delay.

Animal shelter drive
wrapping up soon
Time is running short to
lend a hand to local animal
shelters and rescue groups this
holiday season. Elauwit
Medias Deck the Paws and
Help a Collie drive wraps up
next week.
Elsewhere in this paper, you
will find a list of drop spots
where you can leave your dona-
tion of pet food, cat litter, office
supplies, cleaning supplies and
more.
This is the ninth year
that the publish-

the shelters.
Every year, our
readers have
come through with truckloads
of supplies to help the animals.
This year, with an economy
that is struggling and in the af-
termath of Hurricane Sandy,
the need is especially acute.

Students learned
about tree structure
Students got a special treat by
working with real leaves from
trees.
We did all different kinds of
manipulations to them, she said,
including contour line drawings.
Contour line drawings are
when you dont look at your paper
the whole time youre doing it
and you dont lift your pencil,
Canzanese said.
The drawing does not look
identical to the leaf, she said.
Through the projects, the stu-
dents learned about the structure
of the tree, vein patterns and how
leaves turn color, she said.
The education corridor, which
has been part of the museum for
several years now, is right outside
of the cafeteria, said Mitchell,
and visitors find it interesting.
Its always art made by stu-
dents of various ages, she said.
Its a highly visible space.
Plus, its a nice complement to
the art thats on view upstairs,
Mitchell said.
The art on view is a starting
point for many people, she ex-
plained.
The art museum is not only a
great place to come and view art,
she said. But its also a great
place to draw inspiration from
and then go and make creations
of your own.

s 2012 winds to a close, The
Sun has a couple of special
editions planned.
The first one will be on Dec. 26. It
will be a look back at the major stories
and issues of 2012. Well recap the year
through stories and photos.
The second special edition will be on
Jan. 2. It will be a look ahead to 2013,
and its where we invite you to help us
with our coverage.
Our associate editors are lining up
interviews with local leaders, such as
mayors and school superintendents.
Were preparing a list of questions re-
garding the new year. The idea is to
give the leaders an opportunity to dis-
cuss upcoming issues.
Do you have any questions for your
local officials? If so, please send an
email to us. Our email address for
news submissions appears on this
page and throughout the paper.
Now, were not asking officials to
break out a crystal ball and offer their
prognostications for 2013. No one can
anticipate everything that will happen.
Hurricane Sandy is a prime example.
The storms impact will be felt well
into 2013 and, in some places, even
longer.
But it is possible to set a basic agen-
da for the new year. There may be
some lingering issues from 2012 that
will be wrapped up. There may be
some opportunities or challenges that
already are on the schedule for the up-
coming year. Taxes, for example, al-
ways will be a major topic of discus-
sion. Hopefully, local governing bodies
already are working on plans to make
efficient use of your tax dollar, and
perhaps leaders can share some of
those ideas.
Our editors want to be as thorough
as possible when interviewing local
leaders. They dont want to miss a
question that is on your mind, which is
why were asking for your input.
Send us your questions, and well do
our best to get answers from your local
leaders.

The Mt. Laurel Sun
On Saturday, Dec. 15 at about 10:15 a.m.,
a group of local motorcyclists will descend
upon the Vietnam War Memorial at Laurel
Acres Park in Mt. Laurel.
Warriors Watch Riders member Gary
Cogan shared the invitation with township
council and the community at the Monday,
Dec. 3 council meeting.
Wreaths will be laid at memorials
throughout New Jersey on that day
through the national troop support group.
Members of the public are welcome to
attend.
Were going to 75 different sites, said
Cogan.
The motorcyclists will begin their morn-
ing of services at 9:30 a.m. at Freedom Park
in Medford, Cogan said, before riding to
the memorial behind the library in Marl-
ton. Mt. Laurels stop will come next, fol-
lowed by Cooper River Park.
Last year was about 30 degrees, said
Cogan.
In motorcycle riding, the weather is
everything, he added.
But, even if it rains, the group will still
show, instead opting to arrive in a car.
For years, Mt. Laurel wasnt part of it,
Cogan said.
However, when he joined the group
about four years ago, he made sure the me-
morial was added to the list.
The riders and the cause are now close
to Cogans heart.
He planned to be part of a group escort-
ing the remains of a fallen soldier from
Dover Air Force Base to Toms River on
Dec. 4.
Riders do escorts at the request of the
family, he said.
We never just show up, he said.

The property, located at Centerton Road

The extension also expands the

which will provide it with some
much-needed additional offices
and conference rooms as well as
allowing for its anticipated
growth.
The firms managing share-
holder, Peter Bejsiuk, said, Our

our current location, which gives
them easy access to the court-
houses in N.J., Pa., N.Y., and Del.
Our firm has been a tenant of
Whitesell since 1989, and we have
been pleased with their quality

Business Development: Seeking
trainers and public speakers!
Elite leadership team now expanding a major business
all throughout the East Coast, with a concentrated focus
on NJ/NY/PA. We are looking for motivated, business-
minded people who not only want to diversify or
increase their income, but who enjoy teaching, coaching
and training other people on how to run a business.
We are a global corporation, and our expansion plans
are getting the attention of people in virtually every
background: from professionals, to business owners,
to medical specialists to folks new to the workplace.
We are involved with a multi-trillion/year deregulation
in telecommunications and now, in the deregulation of
energy! We work with numerous Fortune 100
companies on their back end. In Spring 2011, we
were featured on Prime Time Television based on what
we've done. We teach all aspects of the business.
Compensation is performance based, structured in two
components: weekly bonuses and monthly residual pay.
