eeply rooted in our holiday traditions is the inevitable decision to adopt lofty New years resolutions. Whether its losing weight, managing budgets, or reconnecting with old friends, resolutions come with the best of intentions but often lead us to disappointment. So how can you be one of the 10% of Americans who actually fulfill their resolutions? Be realistic Striving to be better whether its for your health, finances, or relationships is always positive, but dont set yourself up to fail. Seriously consider your strengths and limitations. Create a challenge for yourself that is both demanding and rational. Be specific Goals that are big and vague have a lot of margin for error. No one trusts a man without a plan! once youve identified a manageable objective, create a strategy that will help you reach it. Perhaps this involves a new schedule, diet, or ritual. Surround yourself with support People work better in groups than they do alone. Pursue your resolution alongside a friend, and surround yourself with loved ones who cheer you on. Eliminate any potential for sabotage, and adopt visual
aids, trainers, or blogs that will make you more responsible. Focus The promise of a clean slate inspires our ambition, but resolutions succeed under undivided attention. Stick to one for now, and with the right concentration youll achieve it in no time. Then you can start on your next goal; you have 12 months, after all! Forgive mistakes often we dont stick to resolutions because we abandon the effort the minute we fall off the wagon. Dont be defeatist. If you fall down, ask yourself why; learn from the mistake. Which leads to our next point Enjoy the process If your resolution was at all worth setting, then youve got a long way to go. Congratulate yourself on the milestones and keep track of your progress. your evolution might be the most enjoyable part of keeping your resolution. Continuity Commit to your resolution every day, no matter how small the gesture may be. This especially goes with physical fitness: if you cant make it to the gym, do push-ups at home. youll be constantly reminding yourself that youre still accountable.

ur opening interview is with Melanie McGeehan, who grew up in the Chicago area and moved to Fair Lakes five years ago with her six-yearold daughter, Chloe. Residing happily at Camden, Melanie attributes her loyalty to Fair Lakes to its amenities, convenience, and great people. Everythings here, she says, from their favorite pizza parlor to shopping to her daughters pediatrician. Fair Lakes and the greater Fairfax area also supply Melanie with plenty of weekend activities including play dates for Chloe, attending church and getting together with friends. In the summer months she attends the Summer Concert series, enjoys water play at the Fairfax Corner fountain with her daughter, plans picnics and visits local craft fairs. She also checked out our recent Fall Fest! By trade, Melanie works as a business development manager in the federal government marketplace, but her true enjoyment lies in photography and spending time with her daughter. Passionate about her little one, Melanie has shared her thoughts, success, and delight in parenting as a volunteer
4400 Fair Lakes Court, Fairfax, VA 22033 Meeting in the AFCEA Office Building
for Fairfax County. She was a volunteer facilitator for the Nurturing Parent Program, a free course that helps build stronger relationships between parent and child. Under the philosophy that parents succeed by sharing their own interests and hobbies with their children, Melanie and the Nurturing Parent Program help parents recognize and employ supportive parenting practices. Working primarily with families with younger children (classes are available for families with kids up to 17 years old), Melanie helps other parents form strong, lasting bonds with their sons and daughters, proving to be a role model for kids and adults alike. Were proud that this Super Mom and her sidekick Chloe are members of the Fair Lakes family.

iovanni DAgostino claims many of his patrons doubt the legitimacy of his signature Italian accent just a delightful side to his already perfect Italian cuisine. But once you get to know him, youll realize that Giovanni is just as authentic as his ovenbaked pizza. Born and raised in Naples on the sunny side of Vesuvius Giovanni mastered his craft through four years of Italian culinary school, where he learned the classic brick oven technique to serving pizza. He came to America at the age of 20, settling in Brooklyn. There, his Uncle Sal taught him the ways of a traditional New York pizza parlor. Eventually, Giovanni moved to Leesburg, opening Tonys Ny Pizza here in 1994. He also owns Pizza Ny Margherita in Gainesville, but accredits his long stay in Fair Lakes to his loyal customers. While Tonys seems to have all the marks of a classic Ny pizzeria, in reality its so much more. Giovanni has seasoned his menus with complex and artful dishes that pay tribute to his Italian upbringing.
Although the Pizza Margherita is his signature (prepped in a brick oven at 600F), Giovanni also serves up delicious pasta, meat, and seafood dishes. He is a trusted caterer for schools and businesses in the area, and has won various local awards six years in a row. While his personal favorite menu item is the Fettuccine Mediterraneo (cooked with crab, shrimp, and scallops), he recommends his Chicken Brunello: chicken breast sauted in Brunello (a fine, rich Tuscan red wine), mushrooms, and sundried tomato, almost as gorgeous with its rose-colored sauce as it is delicious. Tonys Ny Pizza is a true mom and pop place, run completely by Giovanni, his wife Margaret, and four children two who work fulltime and two who provide marketing and sales input outside their own career and education. Giovanni is also a proud grandfather to little Giovanni (8 years old) and little Margaret (6). Stop by Tonys to see the DAgostino clan and enjoy some authentic and delicious Italian cuisine! Buon appetito!

n todays day and age, as were surrounded by friends, family, coworkers, and the people who make our lives easier, showing each of them gratitude during the holiday season can be timeand money-consuming. But one way to show we really care without breaking the bank is through homemade cookies. Thoughtful, simple, and crafted with love, holiday cookies are a personal reminder to anyone from your Mother-in-Law to Maxs Teacher that you care. Here are 10 ways to package your baked goods with charm and originality: 1. Measure out all the dry ingredients for one batch and layer them in a mason jar. Decorate the jar with a tag that includes a personal message and instructions on how to bake. 2. Gift one cookie each to individual recipient with a personal message in a sturdy, decorative envelope.
3. For parties, bake sugar cookies with holes at their tops. Then, dangle them as ornaments on a small novelty Christmas tree. 4. For a romantic effect, wrap two to three cookies in a small jewelry or glove box, complete with wrapping paper and bow. 5 ... Use your holiday cookies as place setters at dinner parties and gatherings. Arrange one cookie on each plate with a decorative nametag. 6. Check out the Holiday Cookie Card recipe on Country Living (www. countryliving.com), and prepare a bunch with your own messaging, like fortune cookies. Package in clean, durable Chinese take-out boxes. 7. Whip up a lot of your preferred pinwheel cookies, and package them in clear, cellophane wrapping tied at each end made to look like real peppermints. 8. Pack your cookies in souvenir mugs, cups, or glasses (secure with cellophane), and pair with your favorite cocoa, coffee, wine, or liqueur. 9. Recycle an old egg carton and wrap or redecorate it to look holiday chic. Fill with a dozen snowball cookies. 10. Wrap uncooked batter in wax paper, and package with instructions on how to bake, a decorative bow, and a cute cookie cutter tied to the bow.

earning a foreign language brings with it a multitude of added benefits; helping to increase listening ability, memory, creativity and critical thinking. Foreign language study helps children achieve improved math and reading skills. Further, foreign language study expands a childs world and instills in him/her a curiosity about other cultures. young brains are uniquely capable of absorbing the magic of another language. With this in mind, Leslie Lancry started Language Stars in 1998. After years of corporate globe-trotting, Leslies experiences made clear to her the importance of multi lingual education in an increasingly global world. So, with the business experience gained during her corporate stints, Leslie founded Language Stars and grew it into the language powerhouse it is today, with multiple centers in the Chicago and Washington, DC areas as well as over 200 immersion programs in public and private schools. What makes Language Stars so successful is its focus on EARLY education. Most schools in America begin language instruction in middle school. But Leslie recognized a Window of opportunity, when very young brains are programmed to learn language easily and naturally. The
other thing that sets Language Stars apart is the quality of its educators, who hail from more than 20 countries around the globe. Language Stars selects only one in every 5 ..0 teaching applicants through a rigorous, selective recruiting process. once hired, applicants undergo rigorous training before they begin teaching their own classes Each Language Stars center has a dynamic center director who runs the

hy we love winter: holidays, sweater weather, snow days. Why we dont: dry, itchy skin. What many of us dont realize is that along with the inevitable seasonal wardrobe overhaul, we also need to overhaul our skincare and beauty regimen. Just as you protect your body from the elements, you need to give special attention to your skin as well. Sunscreen Its a must. Regardless of the date on the calendar, regardless of your age, regardless that youre not sitting on a beach with a margarita like you wish you were make SURE you are applying sunscreen daily, with an SPF of at least 15 ... Unintentional daily sun exposure accounts for 80% of our lifetime exposure.
Change your moisturizer Sorry, but your summer moisturizer just doesnt dew for the dry ruthlessness of winter wind. Make no mistake: your skin will be itching for more protection this season, and dry skin can lead to premature aging and/or nasty breakouts. Switch to a product thats heavier and creamier; your face will thank you! And make sure you replace your moisturizer every six months. Scrub, scrub, scrub Contrary to what you might think, a good exfoliating scrub once or twice a week will help irritated skin not exacerbate it. An exfoliator will slough off dead skin cells and remove deep-rooted dirt. Be sure to moisturize very well afterword; the new skin you expose will be vulnerable and delicate. With all that in mind, make sure you customize; everyones skin requires a unique chemistry of product and care. While older skin is fragile and needs a more structured regimen, too much product can overwhelm younger faces. Visit some of the specialists at Ulta and Sally Beauty for some skin care pointers and products.

Whether you are with Northrop Grumman, Argon, CGI, General Dynamics, SRA or another organization, employees have the benefit of working in Class A buildings with wonderful amenities, from a fitness center to jogging trails to balconies, patios and more. Walter Shorenstein served in North Africa as a major in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his discharge in 1946,
Walter moved to San Francisco and became a salesman for a commercial real estate firm that would ultimately bear his name. Walter went on to become one of the real estate industrys great leaders.
