ROBERTO RIVERA
Millville Grade: Junior Pos: Guard An intelligent backcourt player who can excel in many roles for the Thunderbolts.

A team-by-team look at boys basketball teams in the greater Cumberland County area:
:

VINELAND
Coach: Travis Amstutz (2nd season, 6-19) Conference: Cape-Atlantic League American Conference Group: Group IV South Last year: 6-19, missed playoffs Returning Letterwinners: 2 Key players: Charlie Ware (Sr., 6-2, F), Eddie Thomas (Jr., 6-0, F). Top newcomers: Manny Colvin (Sr., 6-1, G/ F), Jola Babalola (Jr., 5-9, G), Kenny Ives (Jr., 6-3, F). Outlook: An offseason of turmoil has finally settled down for the Fighting Clan and coach Amstutz. It took until mid-November to confirm the rehiring of Amstutz, who in his second year will look to build on last seasons six-win campaign with an equally inexperienced squad. Ware and Thomas, the teams only returning varsity players, will be good examples for the squads younger members. Ware is best known for his defensive contributions, while Thomas is a tenacious rebounder who generates a lot of second-chance scoring opportunities for his team. Vineland will obviously be counting on a host of new talent to emerge quickly. Of that group, look for Babalola to have the biggest impact in the backcourt for the Fighting Clan. Colvin will serve as a swingman in Vinelands offense, while at 6-foot-3, Ives gives the Clan another big body down low. Vinelands strength will be its athleticism and the team will likely go as far as its performance on defense can take it. Prediction: The Fighting Clan are still young and inexperienced, which means another year of growing pains could be in store. Its possible Vineland could sneak into the field of 16 in the Group IV South playoff picture.

TRAYVOND BARBARY
Buena Grade: Senior Pos: Forward Will need to be the go-to player for a second straight year on a growing Chiefs team.

Vinelands Eddie Thomas grabs a rebound against Millville last season. The junior is one of the Fighting Clans top returners. STAFF PHOTO/CRAIG MATTHEWS
bounds per game as a junior. Bertonazzi and Carty are two players who could help in that area. Bertonazzi is a tireless worker who can be relied on with the basketball. Carty showed flashes offensively last year and its just a matter of how much he developed. If Guilford can stay healthy, he will be a major asset alongside Barbary in the post for Buena. The Chiefs are not short on players, so the chance for any host of names to step in and make an impact is there. Prediction: Buena isnt necessarily rebuilding, the roster just lacks players with a lot of basketball under their belts. That changed this offseason, so expect an increase in wins for the Chiefs. squads most dangerous players around the rim. Watford, Duffy and Jacobs all give the Bulldogs physical presences in the paint. Coach Williams pointed to Bridgetons ability to adjust to the speed of the varsity game as the biggest factor in the teams success. Prediction: The Bulldogs typically find a way to compete, but the team likely is not a threat in the CAL race this season. Bridgeton should find its way into the Group II South playoff field, however.

CUMBERLAND
Coach: John Valore (1st season; 549-363 in 35 seasons with Cherry Hill East) Conference: Tri-Co Classic Group: III South Last year: 3-17, missed playoffs Returning Letterwinners: 3 Key players: Joe Ordille (Jr., 5-8, G), Wesley Savage (Sr., 6-0, G), Gabe Hemighaus (Sr., 6-3, F), Dwayne Parker (Jr., 6-1, F), Milton Morris (Sr., 6-0, G), Joe Durham (Sr., 6-2, F). Top newcomers: Dennis Spence (Jr., 5-11, G/F), Jarred Ferguson (Jr., 5-6, G), Steve Whelan (So., 6-2, F), Devon Scott (Sr., 6-0, G). Outlook: Cumberland is clearly serious about rebuilding the boys basketball program. The Colts lured one of South Jerseys all-time coaching wins leaders out of retirement in Valore (549 wins) to take control of the team. The 68-year-old is back on the sidelines, but dont expect any first-year miracles. There is a lot of work to be done at Cumberland. The Colts will be a little shorthanded to start the year with injuries to Durham and Morris, though both are hopeful to be ready early on. It is still possible Durham plays tonight in Cumberlands opener against Woodstown. Savage is arguably the teams top player and will be looked at as one of the go-to guys. Ordille will shift from shooting guard to point guard to start the season out of necessity, while Valore hopes Hemighaus can develop into a reliable option this year. Valore wants to keep the goals realistic for Cumberland in his first year, which means trying to be one of the 16 teams to qualify for the playoffs in Group III South. Prediction: Cumberlands record may not be anything to write home about at seasons end, but if the team matures under Valore the pay off could be big. Expect more than three wins and a legitimate chance at a low-seed playoff berth.

MICHAEL HOLLOWAY JR.

Sacred Heart Grade: Soph. Pos: Forward Has the ability to be a dominant inside force; flashed his potential last year as a freshman.

ST. AUGUSTINE
Coach: Paul Rodio (36th season, 758-208) Conference: CAL National Group: Non-Public A South Last year: 22-5, reached Non-Public A South quarterfinals Returning Letterwinners: 4 Key players: Mike Greenman (Sr., 5-9, G), David Sullivan (Sr., 6-2, G/F), Blake Rossell (Sr., 6-6, F), Brian Seward (Jr., 6-2, G/F), Joe Gatto (Jr., 6-4, F), Nate Segal (Jr., 6-1, G/F). Top newcomers: Kevin Kennedy (Jr., 5-9, G), Jake ONeil (Fr., 6-7, F), Mike Vasturia (Fr., 6-4, F). Outlook: A loss to Bishop Eustace in the sectional quarterfinals last year didnt sit well with a Hermits team primed to make a deeper run in this years tournament. The group will be led by Greenman, one of the top guards in South Jersey, who has emerged not only as a major source for scoring, but also as a leader on the floor. St. Augustine will have depth on its side, according to Rodio, who sees at least 10 players hes comfortable rotating onto the floor from his roster. Sullivan is the toughest kid on the team, Rodio said, and is also the Preps top defender. Rossell, at 6-6 and 200 pounds, was a pleasant surprise for the Hermits last season and will be counted on in the post in a bigger role this year. The diamond in the rough is Seward. The junior packs as much speed as anyone on the team and could break out this year after getting what figures to be a major expansion of minutes. At 6-7, ONeil will see time for the Hermits in the paint, as will Vasturia, another freshman. Always expect a few surprise names to crop up and have an impact for the Prep. Prediction: St. Augustine will once again be in the conversation for the CAL championship as well as a National Conference title. The Hermits could have the talent to make a run at a sectional crown, at the very least.

MILLVILLE
Coach: Michael Jones (3rd season, 24-27) Conference: CAL American Group: IV South Last year: 13-12, reached Group IV South first round Returning Letterwinners: 4 Key players: Rashon Sorrell (Sr., 5-11, G), Andrew Holmes (Sr., 5-8, G), Roberto Rivera (Jr., 5-11, G), Khaliq Ford (Jr., 5-8, G), Bishop Evans (Sr., 5-11, G). Top newcomers: Terron Mitchell (Jr., 6-1, F), Kelvin Tull (Jr., 5-10, F), Keyvon Rivera (Jr., 6-0, F), Josh Bocachica (Sr., 5-11, G/F). Outlook: Millville was seconds away from a huge upset win in the first round of last years Group IV South playoffs thanks in large part to their speed, which will be another positive this year. But what Millville has in athleticism, it will lack in size. Expect the Bolts to march a guard-heavy lineup onto the court, headlined by Sorrell, Holmes and Rivera. The team has just three players that crack the 6-foot mark, which could spell trouble on the glass for Millville. Holmes will likely man the point for Millville, while Rivera brings a great basketball IQ to the floor. Sorrell could lead the trio in scoring. Evans is also back for Millville this year and is among the areas better shooters. Mitchell could surface as a threat for Millville and is among the Bolts longer players. He could provide a much-needed boost around the rim. Prediction: Jones sees Millville as a betterthan-.500 squad and a contender in the conference hunt. The Bolts should be in the playoff mix at seasons end.

MIKE GREENMAN
St. Augustine Grade: Senior Pos: Guard Arguably the areas best guard and one of the top point players in all of South Jersey.

SCHALICK
Coach: Eric Cassidy (5th season, 46-55) Conference: Tri-County Classic Group: Group I South Last year: 21-8, reached Group I South semifinals Returning Letterwinners: 6 Key players: Melvin Allen (Jr., 6-2, G), Rashaan Armstead (Jr., 6-9, C), Deandre Soloman (Jr., 6-1, F), Tariq Furbush (Jr., 6-1, F). Top newcomers: Brandon Ritter (Sr., 6-0, G), Alex Stewart (Sr., 6-3, F), Jarred McCafferty (Sr., 6-3, F), Shamirr Kennedy (So., 5-9, G). Outlook: Schalick returns four starters, all of which are juniors, from a team that reached the sectional semifinals a year ago. Armstead is by far the most physically imposing center in the area and showed more and more promise as his sophomore campaign wore on. Cassidy notes his big man has improved hands and footwork this season. Allen is the teams other big offensive threat. The junior has an above-average jumper and uses his speed to attack the basket as effectively as any player in the area. Helping the 1-2 punch of Armstead and Allen are Soloman and Furbush. The pair of 6-foot-1 forwards give the Cougars added rebounding and toughness. Furbush is a capable defender, while Soloman is a slightly better scorer. The Cougars will have options of the bench as well, including Rittner and Kennedy in the backcourt, and Stewart and McCafferty, both 6-foot-3, in the post. Prediction: Schalick should easily contend for a Classic title and could challenge for a sectional crown as well. Paulsboro will be the Cougars main obstacle in the Group I South section.

DELSEA REGIONAL
Coach: Tom Freeman (9th season, 66-112) Conference: Tri-County Royal Group: III South Last year: 23-5, reached Group III South quarterfinals Returning Letterwinners: 5 Key players: Cedric Elleby (Sr., 6-3, F), Joe Ingram (Sr., 5-10, G), Ryan Colone (Sr., 6-4, G/F), Ronnie Russell (Jr., 5-10, G), Keith Braxton (So., 6-1, G). Top newcomers: Kwame Morton (So., 6-5, G/ F), Kaleb Morton (Fr., 6-1, G), Kris Anderson (Jr., 6-2, G/F), Briazon Williams (Sr., 5-10, G). Outlook: For the most part, everything came together for the Crusaders last season. The team won the Royal title and a playoff game for the first time since 1997 during a 23win campaign. Delsea did it largely behind the play of reigning Daily Journal Boys Basketball Player of the Year Elleby, who sits just 92 points shy of 1,000 for his career. Elleby had plenty of help, however, and 60 percent of last years starting five is gone to graduation. Colone will need to play a bigger role this year as one of the teams more experienced players. The senior can play inside and out, and is an above-average shooter, especially from 3point range. Ingram is a three-year starter and very capable option for Delsea in the backcourt and is very smart with the ball. The real thing to watch with Delsea is how the other players fill in. Russell averaged three points per game in limited action as a sophomore, Braxton averaged 1.3 points per game as a freshman, while the 6-foot-5 Kwame Morton is an unknown at the varsity level. Kaleb Morton could challenge for a starting spot and Williams should be a key component off the bench for the Crusaders. Prediction: Another 20-win season is by no means out of the question, but it will be tougher to get there. Expect Delsea to be a factor in both the Royal and Group III South races.

RASHAAN ARMSTEAD
Schalick Gra de: Junior Pos: Center Controlled the game at times as a sophomore; Improved hands and footwork could go a long way this season.

SACRED HEART
Coach: Kevin Nash (3rd season, 22-32) Conference: CAL United Group: Non-Public B South Last year: 14-14, reached Non-Public B South semifinals Returning Letterwinners: 5 Key players: Khyle Lee-Williams (Sr., 6-1, 185), Michael Holloway Jr. (So., 6-6, F/C), Themba Lungu (Jr., 5-7, G), Steven Tobolski (So., 5-11, G), Justin DeRossi (Sr., 6-2, F). Top newcomers: Christopher Burch Jr. (Jr., 6-3, G), Tyler Lunsford (Fr., 5-9, G), Shawn Agosto (Jr., 5-9, G/F), Zachary Steelman (Jr., 6-5, C), Raquan Loatman (Sr., 5-7, G). Outlook: No area team could pack more potential than Sacred Heart. The Lions lost four starters to graduation from a team that made a run to the sectional semifinals last season, but the players stepping into the lineup possess varsity experience and have matured. Lee-Williams is the teams lone returning starter and is among, if not the top, area rebounders. Along with his ability to grab boards, Lee-Williams can finish around the basket. Holloway is a real candidate to emerge as one the areas top players. He possesses great footwork and instincts, and is athletic for his size. Lungu and Tobolski give Sacred Heart a pair of speedy guards. The talent doesnt stop there for the Lions, however. Lunsford will run the point for Sacred Heart as a freshman and is drawing rave reviews from Nash. The third-year coach said that Lunsford could be the teams best player. Prediction: The United Conference is talented, but Sacred Heart should make a run at the title. As far as the playoffs are concerned, expect the Lions to at least make it back to the final four in Non-Public B South.

GAMES TO WATCH
Millville at Vineland, today, 5:30 p.m.; Vineland at Millville, Jan. 22, 4 p.m. The cross-county rivals split their two meetings last year, with Millville winning by a convincing 18 points in the first game before Vineland countered with a stunning eight-point win in its sixvictory campaign. Delsea vs. St. Benedicts at Schalick, Saturday, 4:30 p.m. This marquee game will feature Delsea against St. Benedicts, the No. 17 ranked team in the country according to USA Today. The Newark-based school has four players committed to Division I college programs, so its a chance for area fans to see the Crusaders take on an elite program. Vineland at Sacred Heart, Jan. 5, 7 p.m. Last year, the cross-town enemies met twice in the City Series rivalry game, with the Lions taking the first meeting. Much like with Millville, Vineland rebounded to win its second date with one of its mostheated opponents. Millville at Bridgeton, Jan. 17, 7 p.m.; Bridgeton at Millville, Feb. 14, 4 p.m. If the weather cooperates, these county rivals could see each other twice this season in what has proven to be an electric atmosphere in recent meetings.

CUMBERLAND CHRISTIAN
Coach: Mark Hobbs (6th season, 29-67) Conference: Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Last year: 3-19 Returning Letterwinners: 3 Key players: Chris Fitting (Sr., 5-7, G), Antonio Echevarria (Sr., 6-0, G/F), Matt Hilton (Sr., 5-11, G). Top newcomers: Richie Gardenhire (Fr., 510, F), Ryan Blackwell (So., 5-6, G), Austin Giovanazzi (So., 6-4, F). Outlook: Off to a 1-4 start to the 2012-13 season, Cumberland Christian is hoping to grow as the campaign wears on. The team returns just three players with major varsity experience in Fitting, Echevarria and Hilton. Fitting is a near-lock to lead the team in scoring, is the Crusaders best ball handler and a leader. This season marks Echevarrias first chance to make a real impact on the court. Hiltons assets are seen on defense and rebounding and Hobbs is hoping he can improve as a dribbler. Gardenhire is a source of excitement for the program and Blackwell has a developing 3point shot and is a good defender while Giovanazzi has a big frame that Hobbs is hoping the sophomore can put to use. Prediction: The Crusaders should eclipse the three-win mark from a season ago and Hobbs hopes the team sneaks into the TSCAC playoff picture. How much they mature will depend on if those goals are met.

BUENA REGIONAL
Coach: Andre Clements (2nd season, 4-22) Conference: CAL United Group: II South, missed playoffs Last year: 4-22 Returning Letterwinners: 5 Key players: Trayvond Barbary (Sr., 6-4, F), Ross Bertonazzi (Jr., 5-8, G), Joe Carty (Sr., 5-10, G), Darryl Guilford (Sr., 6-6, F), Michael Busby (Sr., 6-0, G). Top newcomers: Kasey Keller (Sr., 6-1, G), Jalen Stratton (Sr., 6-3, F), Mahkvan Singh (Jr., 6-4, F), Jamal Tillman (So., 5-8, G), Patrick Speer (Jr., 6-2, G). Outlook: Buena went through transition in every sense of the word as a program last season and its record showed it as the Chiefs finished 4-22 under Clements. The record was not an indication of Clements coaching ability or the teams desire, however. The Chiefs were just short on any legitimate varsity experience last year and their inability to handle pressure in game situations was evident. But spending some brief time around the team this preseason, it was easy to see the groups attitude has changed. Barbary will again be the leader of Buena, and posted averages of 15 points and 10 re-

BRIDGETON
Coach: Osco Williams (9th season, 94-105) Conference: CAL National Group: Group II South Last year:13-15, reached Group II South quarterfinals Returning Letterwinners: 2 Key players: TyTrel Stubbs (So., G), Stefon Bowman (So., 5-7, G). Top newcomers: Dakee Watford (Sr., G), Ryiad Duffy (Jr., F), Nazir Williams (So., 6-3, C), Eddie Jacobs (Sr., C), Azim Love (So., G). Outlook: No team sees more turnover this year than Bridgeton, which lost 14 seniors, including its entire starting lineup, to graduation. Coach Osco Williams wont use that as an excuse when looking at the Bulldogs outlook. Bridgeton, as always, has a lot of good athletes in the program and will field a deep team. Its up to the players to emerge and settle into roles. Stubbs will start at point guard for the Bulldogs and be leaned on thanks to his quickness and good decision making skills. Bowman is another player with varsity experience and will fill the shooting guard role for Bridgeton. A strength for Bridgeton figures to be rebounding. At 6-3, look for Williams, a wide receiver on the Bridgeton football team, to be one of the
