~ Our Mission Statement ~

GAUDETE SUNDAY
The third Sunday of Advent, so called from the first word of the Introit at Mass (Gaudete is the imperative plural form of the Latin verb gaudere "to Rejoice").
The Liturgical Season of Advent originated as a fast of forty days in preparation for Christmas, commencing on the day after the feast of Saint Martin (November 12), whence it was often called "Saint Martin's Lent" -- a name by which it was known as early as the fifth century. The introduction of the Advent fast cannot be placed much earlier, because there is no evidence of Christmas being kept on December 25th before the end of the fourth century, and the preparation for the feast could not have been of earlier date than the feast itself. In the ninth century, the duration of Advent was reduced to four weeks, the first allusion to the shortened season being in a letter of Saint Nicholas I (858-867) to the Bulgarians, and by the twelfth century the fast had been replaced by simple abstinence. Saint Gregory the Great was the first to draw up prayers for the Advent season, and the Gregorian Sacramentary (the Prayer Book of the Liturgy - like the Roman Missal) is the earliest to provide Masses for the Sundays of Advent. Here provision was made for five Sundays, but by the tenth century four were the usual number, though some churches of France observed five as late as the thirteenth century. Notwithstanding all these modifications, however, Advent still preserved most of the characteristics of a penitential season which made it a kind of counterpart to Lent, the

middle (or third) Sunday corresponding with Laetare or Mid-Lent Sunday. Gaudete Sunday as on Laetare Sunday, the organ and flowers, forbidden during the rest of the season, were permitted to be used; rose-colored vestments were allowed instead of purple (or black, as formerly); the deacon and subdeacon reassumed the dalmatic and tunic at the chief Mass, and cardinals and bishops wore rose-color vestments instead of purple. The rose colored candle on the Advent Wreath is lit, to symbolize the fact that the penitential observances of the season are suspended for the day in order to rejoice in the Redemption which is so near at hand. All these distinguishing marks have continued in use, and are the present discipline of the Latin Church. Gaudete Sunday, therefore, makes a break like Laetare Sunday, about midway through a season which is otherwise of a penitential character, and signifies the nearness of the Lord's coming. Of the "stations" kept in Rome the four Sundays of Advent, that at the Vatican basilica is assigned to Gaudete Sunday, as being the most important and imposing of the four. In the Liturgy throughout Advent continual reference is made to our Lord's second coming, and this is emphasized on the third Sunday by the additional signs of gladness permitted on that day. Gaudete Sunday is further marked by a new Invitatory, the Church no longer inviting the faithful to adore merely "the Lord who is to come," but calling upon them to worship and hail with joy "the Lord who is now nigh and close at hand." The Nocturne lessons from the Prophecy of Isaiah describe the Lord's coming and the blessings that will result from it, and the antiphons at Vespers re-echo the prophetic promises. The joy of expectation is emphasized by the constant Alleluias, which occur in both Office and Mass throughout the entire season. In the Mass, the Introit Gaudete in Domino semper (Rejoice in the Lord always) strikes the same note, and gives its name to the day. The Epistle again incites us to rejoicing, and bids us prepare to meet the coming Savior with prayers and supplication and thanksgiving. In the Gospel, the words of Saint John Baptist beckon us to witness that the Lamb of God is even now in our midst, though we appear to know Him not. The spirit of the Liturgy all through Advent is one of expectation and preparation for the Christmas feast as well as for the second coming of Christ, and the penitential exercises suitable to that spirit are thus on Gaudete Sunday suspended for a while in order to symbolize that joy and gladness in the Promised Redemption which should never be absent from the heart of the faithful.

In todays Gospel, we hear the prophet, John the Baptist, being asked a profound stewardship question: What should we do? Each group wants to know the appropriate response to Johns call; each reply points to how they should treat others. John does not simply say, Be baptized. Rather, he points them to their jobs and personal relationships. Johns message is simple: judgment is near, and repentance includes treating others well. We should be willing to share what we have with those in need. To listen to John the Baptist is to be called to account. Do I give only of my excess, or am I the good steward who is willing to sacrifice in order to help others? Christmas arrives early in the Philippines

St. Johns just received a note from Natalie Bayci saying the boxes of school supplies and books we collected for the mission trip in January to the Philippines arrived this week! They were so excited they begged permission to open the boxes early and distribute the goodies, as Christmas Gifts! Natalie could not say no-she told them Merry Christmas from their brothers and sisters in Winfield, Il! She also shared this part of the Philippines was spared the typhoon! But she asked us to pray for those not so lucky! Thank you generous donors for a wonderful Christmas surprise for our needy friends! ~ Maureen Brennan

St. John the Baptist School News

We are so blessed at SJB to have an amazing teaching staff. However, many of us only really know the teachers we come in direct contact with through our kids. We have created a series called "In the Spotlight" to help introduce our teachers to our entire school and parish community.

In the Spotlight: Anna Marie Bergl

I graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Elementary Education and English. I also possess a Master of Education degree from National Louis University in Middle School Curriculum with a mathematics emphasis. My teaching certificate includes two middle school endorsements-one in English and the other in mathematics. After graduating college, I taught sixth grade in the Archdiocese of Chicago for two years and 4th and 5th grade classes at a suburban public school for five years. For a number of years, I worked in education on a part-time basis as I raised my own children. During this time, I worked part-time as a special education aide, a bilingual tutor and a substitute teacher. Prior to beginning at St. Johns, I taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts in another Diocese of Joliet school. pattz@stjohnwinfield.org I have been teaching full-time for 28 years with the last 18 at St. John the Baptist School as the 8th grade homeroom and religion teacher. I taught 5th -8th grade math for 16 years and 7th and 8th grade English for several years. Last year I began teaching 6th-8th grade Language Arts again. When I find free time in my schedule, I enjoy listening to music, reading, baking, bike-riding, and playing guitar. I have more time to do these things now that my two sons are grown adults and have left the nest. I really enjoy teaching and cant think of a better job! I have many great memories of teaching at St. Johns, so to pick one highlight is impossible. I feel blessed to have taught so many wonderful young people in this close parish community and to work with my talented coworker-friends.

Our priests are always available to make hospital visits. However, you or a family member must notify the St. Johns parish office of the confinement in the hospital. Also, remind the hospital that the name of the patient must be shown on the visitation sheet which is given to the priest when he makes his calls. We want to make sure our parishioners needs and requests are met, so please remember this when entering the hospital.
