1-Introduction :
Game of thrones is a TV show adapted from a series of books called A song of ice and fire created by George R. R. Martin, published in 1996. Game of Thrones is an adult medieval fantasy genre, set in a fictional world produced and created for HBO ( Home Box Office) an American cable television network .The first episode was released in USA the 17 of April 2011 and now 20 episodes have been released during 2 seasons. Every episode is around 52 /55 min long. Basically the story of Game of Thrones starts by the fight between 4 families, the lannisters, the starks, the Baratheons and the Targaryens,they are all in struggle to reach and get the iron throne which control and rule all of the 7 kingdoms. The main topics and aspects existing in Game of Thrones are family, religion, sexuality, social hierarchy and political maneuvering. We will first have a look about the deep mise en scene of Game of Thrones and then try to find out how and why the media is used to interact with the with audience.

2-Deep mise en scene of Game of Thrones:

Characters Backstory:

To get to the story where the tv show starts we must know what happened prior the first episode. The Targaryen family ruled the 7 kingdoms for over 300 years, But before the story from the tv show has been presenting, there was a civil war which has riven the 7 kingdoms. The civil war started because the eldest son of the king

also called as the mad king, Aerys II Targaryen, kidnapped Lyanna stark, the younger sister of Ned Stark, lord of winterfell, the head of the house stark and also the fiance of Robert Baratheon head of the house of Baratheon and close friend of Ned stark. The mad king had killed both of Neds and Lyannas father and eldest Brother. So Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark decided to declare war against the Targaryen family. The Lannister family( one of the great house of the 7 kingdoms) stayed neutral during most of the rebellion war but suddenly betrayed the mad king and killed him. Robert Baratheon, with the help of Ned Stark finally won the rebellion and became king of the 7 kingdoms. Neds sister and also Roberts finace died during the war so Robert married Cercei Lannister to consolidate the alliance between the Lannister and the Baratheon. It is also important to mention that two young children of the mad king, Viserys and Daenerys, survived and were taken to a safe place. Few years later, the House of Greyjoy, leading by Balon Greyjoy declare war to the king Robert Baratheon but was defeated, two of Balon Greyjoy son's were killed and the last one was given to Ned stark. We will now talk briefly about the main characters backstory of Game of Trones.

Ned Stark played y Sean Bean:

He is the head of Stark family, he has been raised with Robert Baratheon, and been friends with him ever since. He married Catelyn Tully who was the fiance of his older brother before he died. He is a good father, kind and he has a strong sense of honor and justice.

Catelyn Tully played by Michelle Fairley :

She is the wife of Ned Stark. She supposed to marry Neds older brother but he was killed by the mad king that is one of the reason why Roberts rebellion has started. She and Ned Stark have got 5 children, they are well respected and loved by their people.

Sansa Stark played by Sophie Turner :

She is the eldest daughter of Ned and Catelyn stark. She has 3 brother, Ron, Bran, Rickon, and a little sister Arya.

Robb Stark played by Richard Madden:

He is the eldest son of Catelyn and Ned Stark. He is the successor of Ned at the head of the Family.

Arya Stark played by Maisie Williams :

She is the last daughter of Catelyn and Ned Stark, She was raised in Winterfall. She is very different from her older sister, she likes fighting and playing boys games.

Bran Stark played by Isaac Hempstead Wright :

He is the second son of Catelyn and Ned Stark. He was raised in Winterfall. He is smart and really good at using weapon.

Jon Snow played by Kit Harrington:

He is the bastards son of Ned Stark. He was raised in Winterfall. He got on well with his half brother and sisters.

Cersei Lannister played by Lena Heady :

She is now the queen of the 7 kingdoms by marrying the king Robert Baratheon, She is one of the 3 children of Tywin Lannister, and she is the twin sister of Jaime Lanister. She has been raised to be later a queen, she and her twin brother have been having a incestuous relationship since their childhood. She is cruel, ambitious, and would do everything to succeed.

Tywin Lannister played by Charles Dance :

He is the father of Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion Lannister. He is a very intelligent ,calculating and controlling man. He managed his whole life to keep the Lannister house to the top of power. He is a great politician and a great military leader. He stayed neutral during the rebellion leading by Robert Baratheon, he only choose a side when Roberts victory was inevitable.

Jaime Lannister played by Nikolaj Coster Waldau :

He is the son of tywin Lannister and the brother of Cersei and Tyron . He has been having incestuous relationship with his twin sister and they got 3 children together.He is a great warrior and has been knight at the age of 15 .He lost his mother at the age of 9 when she gave birth to his little brother Tyron .He seems to love Tyron unlike his sister and his father.

Tyron Lannister played by Peter Dinklage :

He is the last son of tywin Lannister and the little brother of Cersei and Jaime, he is a dwarf and his mother died when she gave birth to him. He is very intelligent , calculating and also stubborn. He has been having a very complicated relationship with his father and her sister because of his deformity and because of the death of his mother.

Joffrey Baratheon played by Jack Gleeson:

He is the first son of Cersei Lannister and Robert Baratheon, the successor of the iron king. His uncle,Jaime Lannister, is actually his real father. He is like his mother, very cruel and has a bad temper. He is 12 years old when Game of thrones starts.

Daenerys Targaryen played by Emilia Clarke :

She is the daughter of the previous king of the 7 kingdoms ( the mad king). She was a baby when her father was killed and then Robert Baratheon became king. She was rescued before to get killed and sent away.

Game of Thrones was originally a series of books A song of ice and fire created and written by George .R.R Martin.The first book A game of Thrones was published in 1996 in USA. So far five books have been written and the writer planned to write seven books to end the story. George R.R. Martin is an American writer born on the 20th of September 1948, he has written several novels in the 80s and was already a famous and confirmed writer of fantasy genre before A song of ice and fire . The first season composed of 10 episodes is based on the first book of the series A song of ice and fire called A game of Thrones . The second season is based on the second book of the series A Clash of Kings. The third season will be released at the end of march 2013 and will be based on the first half of the third book of the series: A Storm of Swords. The second half of the book will be the season four of the show.

According to George R.R. Martin Game of Thrones was directly influenced by the Wars of Roses Which took place in England between 1455 and 1485 .It was a series of wars between the house of Lancaster and the house of York which were fighting to conquer the throne of England.Even if the events influenced a lot Martin for his novels, he said: There is really no onefor one character-for-character correspondence. I like to use history to flavor my fantasy, to add texture and versimilitude, but simply rewriting history with the names changed has no appeal for me.I prefer to re-imagine it all,and it in new and unexpected directions. Obviously Game of Thrones wouldnt exist without The Lord Of the Ringcreated by J.R.R Tolkien. Both of them are Creation of a whole fictional world, surrounded by magic and mystic creatures. But Game Of Thrones is much more darker and realistic than The Lord of The Ring. Also if the Lord of the ring is more for young audience and use more of romantic aspects , Martin for his novel uses sex, torture ,violence or prostitution.

Nowadays mass media have taken a huge part in peoples life. Television and internet are the biggest media in the world.

Game of Thrones is shown on HBO an American cable television network .HBO is present in 151 countries in the world. In USA episodes of the previous seasons of Game of Throne were shown every Sunday around 10 pm . On average 4 million people watch every episodes of the first two seasons. Internet is a huge platform to inform and promote the show. The official website is really complete.You can know all the latest news( like the new cast member or the places where it is shot), watch the previous episodes or even have a look on the behind the scenes .

As we all know social networks have taken a huge part in our life.The leader , facebook , with over one billion users all over the world is essential. The official Game of Thrones page is followed by over 4,5 millions people.It gives us news about the show , pictures ,link to the official website page , and possibility to watch episodes of the previous seasons.

Game of Thrones is also on Twiter ,the second most important social network.Followed by over 500 000 users ,it is one of the 10 most followed TV show on twitter.

B- Why the media is used to interact with the audience:

Game of Thrones has been in 2012 the most pirated TV show on the web according to TorrentFreak.com. Around 4.2 million people download illegally every episodes of the second season. In barely 2 years Game of Thrones ,one of the first king of his genre, has become one of the most popular TV show. Many aspects can explain why Game of Thrones is so watched and loved by the audience. First of all people like it because of his realism , even if its a fantasy kind in a fictional world , the realism of his characters and their complexity is the main part of the show. DB Weiss, producer and writter of Game of Thrones said: It is not a good guy/bad guy story. Its a story where everybody is pursuing their own interests and everybody is following their own code and its about those interests and those ethics coming into conflict with each other. Indeed the characters are very complex and dense,ambiguous, fascinating and rich. Also,the environment is very important for the audience, the sets are magnificient and the landscape are splendid. David Benioff , producer and writer of the show said : It is never look fake ,for us its about creating a world and making it an authentic and believable world,but its not our world.

Indeed , they used some human influences to create the show. Frank Doelger one of the producer said : Our brief was to try to combine interesting visual elements from a lot of societies and periods. Medieval Europe ,Oriental influences ,Asian influences,African influences.Its an interesting combination between a real world with an overlay of fantasy.

Also ,people love it because Game of Thrones treat the audience as an adult, with the presence of nudity , violence , gore , lies and political plot.

4-Conclusion:
Game of Trones , one of the first epic fantasy tv show of his genre has become very famous and popular in just two years.The first season was nominated for 13 Emmy awards and the second season won 6 creative art Emmy awards.The show has been censed by critics .The complexity of his characters , the magnificent of the landscapes, the costumes and the complexity of the story bring to the audience many and various emotions.The talent of the writers DB Weiss and David Benioff to adapt and bring into television the huge original story of George R.R. Martin and his A song Of Ice And Fire is also significant for the success of the show. The third season will start the 31 of March on HBO in USA,no doudt that the show will be very successful again .
