Purpose of Establishment

KIMM contribute to the development of the nation and its industries by developing and spreading source technologies in mechanical engineering, and by conducting reliability testing on and evaluation of the related products.

History

The Korea Test Institute of Machinery and Metals(KIMM) was established.

1981

The Korea Test Institute of Machinery and Metals, and Korea Research Institute of Ships(KRIS) established in 1976, were merged into one research institute. Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering(KRISO) and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) were established as subsidiaries. Transferring the Industrial Technology Center(ITC) to the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH). The main office of KIMM moved from Changwon to Daejeon.

Nano Convergence and Manufacturing Systems Research Division
The Nano Convergence and Manufacturing Systems Research Division is responsible for the development of production process, materials, equipment and measurement and evaluation technologies related to the production of nano or micron-precision machinery and parts. The scope of research covers printed electromechanical systems, nature-inspired mechanical systems, nano-process technology and evaluation equipment, ultraprecision mechanical systems, robots and intelligent machinery, and eco-manufacturing technology using highenergy beams. These technologies are the core technologies for nano convergence and manufacturing systems of the future, and are capable of supporting the competitiveness of the production industries and enhancing the quality of their final products.

Environmental and Energy Systems Research Division


The Environmental and Energy Systems Research Division (EERD) conducts research on energy and environmental equipment and/or plants to today's most critical energy and environmental issues. The research conducted by the EERD encompasses the development of strategic energy and environmental solutions, including clean combustion technologies, waste and biomass utilization, plasmaassisted environmental and energy processes, clean gas and diesel engines, air pollutants and fine particulate clean-up control, hydrogen and/or fuel cell systems, cryogenic cooling systems, energy-efficient fluidic machinery, high-performance heat pumps, CO2 sequestration, energy and water sustainability, and heat and fluid equipment for nuclear power plants. Furthermore, the division is concentrating its efforts on improving energy efficiency by optimizing environmental and energy plant systems and improving the efficiency of their constituent parts, in addition to qualifying the reliability and performance of such systems.

Systems Engineering Research Division
The primary role of the Systems Engineering Research Division(SERD) is to develop efficient engineering design systems and new mechanical systems - such as core technologies and system integration technology. The research fields of the SERD include maglev technologies for urban and super-high speed trains; modeling, simulation and control technologies for machinery systems; and machinery reliability and structure technologies.

Center For Nanoscale Mechatronics and Manufacturing (CNMM)


The Center for Nanoscale Mechatronics and Manufacturing (CNMM), which plays a part in the 21st Century Frontier R&D program supported by the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, develops advanced nanoscale manufacturing processes and fabrication equipment for commercial products with minimal structures ranging from 10nm to 100nm. It has a variety of applications in the fields of information and telecommunication, energy and environment, biotechnology, incumbent industries, and so on.

Center for Environmentally-Friendly Vehicles(CEFV)


The Center for Environmentally-Friendly Vehicles(CEFV) is supported by the Eco-STAR Project of the Ministry of Environment. The Center concentrates on three major R&D fields, namely diesel aftertreatment technology, clean fuel vehicle technology based on CNG and LPG, and fundamental research, to significantly reduce the level of atmospheric pollutants emitted by automotive by developing and promoting low emission technologies.

Reliability Assessment Center


The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) has been officially designated as a reliability assessment center for mechanical components by the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy, and also serves as a diagnostic center for mechanical components. It performs these tasks by approving items for reliability certification, establishing assessment standards, researching designs for accelerated test conditions, constructing assessment equipment, providing reliability information, and offering support for the R&D activities of business to companies.

Center for the Urban Maglev Program


The Center for the Urban Maglev Program is responsible for developing the driverless urban maglev system with a maximum speed of 110 km/h by 2012. The urban maglev system will begin commercial service on the 6.1km demonstration line at Incheon International Airport from 2013. It will be the third revenue service maglev system following the Transrapid in China and the Linimo in Japan. The Urban Maglev Program will provide an environmentally-friendly and economic transportation solution to cities that need light rail systems.
