S O L U T I O N # 1
I f this woman can get up a f ew minutes bef ore her children and daven just the
f irst pasuk of Shema Y israel with Baruch Shei m and Shemoneh E srei , she should do
so. At 11 a.m. she should recite the Bi rchos H ashachar (M orni ng Blessi ngs)
omitting A l N eti llas Y adayi m, and going straight through Bi rchos H ashachar. She
may not daven Pesuk ei D ezi mra with its Brochos af ter Shemoneh E srei , but she
may recite them omitting Hashems Name from the closings of Baruch
Sheamar and Yishtabach. Some Posk im maintain that it is better for a
woman not to recite the brochos that come f irst and the bracha that follows Kri as
Shema, since it is really past the time f or Tefi llas Shachari s. She should however

Prayer t he Essence of Mankind
Prayer is not a gender related issue. That is to say, man was created with a unique
ability and need to communicate with his creator. This is perhaps the most
important aspect, which distinguishes man f rom animals. When G-d created Man,
He blew into his nostrils a breath of l i fe. Onk el es explains that this phenomenon is
ref erring specif ically to Mans ability to articulate his emotions and spi ri t with words
and speech.
The verse in Berei shi s

reads; All the wild shrubs did not yet exist on the earth, and
all the wild plants had not yet sprouted. This was because H ashem had not brought
rain on the earth, and there was no man to work the ground.
Rashi explains that what this really means is that since there was no man to
appreciate the rain and pray f or it to happen; theref ore H ashem did not yet cause it
to rain and make plant lif e grow. This in essence means H ashem waited f or man to
take note of the needs of the world and to communicate to Him to interact with
the world and sustain it with its needs.
When the world was created, the vegetation of the ground that was created on Day
3 of Creation lay dormant at the earths surf ace without f urther development or
progress. Rain was lacking, and H ashem did not grant it to the world until the
creation of Man at which point, he prayed f or it and H ashem granted his wish.
Although rain appears to be a natural phenomenon, Hashem apportions it to the
world in varying amounts, at dif f erent places and dif f erent times. Rain can come as
a blessing or it can come as a curse. I t can be withheld altogether causing great
f amine and drought. Our Sages taught that the key that controls rain is solely in the
hand of G-d and not in the hands of any M alachi m (angels); thus, when we need
rain, we must realize that were beseeching H ashem directly to give us rain. This
communication is unique to all Mankind alike. Men, women and even children cry
out to H ashem f or their needs as depicted throughout T anach over and over again.
The Torah relates the prayers recited by f amous individuals throughout history
including those that were said by illustrious women. Chazal (our Sages) teach that
the matriarchs were childless f or many years so that they would pour their heart s
out in prayer to H ashem. H ashem indulges in the prayers of His loved ones.

Undoubtedly, prayer def ines the essence of Man. I n the Gemara Bava Kama

, Man is
ref erred to as M aveh (one who prays) as the verse states, Omar Shomer, assa bok er
vegam l ayl a, i m ti bayoun bayou (Says the watchman: Morning comes, and also night; if
you seek, seek). Rashi explains: this verse ref ers to H ashem as the watchman Who
says when morni ng, the period in history when H ashem will redeem the righteous
f rom their exile, arrives; and darkness is cast upon the wicked; if one wishes to beg
f orgiveness and repent, they should do so. Thus the term bayou def ines Man as one
who seeks and prays (davens) to H ashem for f orgiveness.
Throughout the generations, the Book of Tehi lli m was perhaps the most worn
volume of the entire T anach, as men, women, and children pored over its pages,
reciting f ervent prayer in times of need. The power of prayer is most of ten
augmented with the recital of T ehi lli m as D ovi d H amel ech captures the heart and soul
of Jews in all situations in lif e throughout time, in the timeless words of T ehi lli m.
According to this, one may f ind it diff icult to understand why women were in f act
excused and exempted from certain obligations of daily prayer?
The A budraham explains that the reason that women were exempted f rom certain
obligations of prayer was because of the womans central role in the Jewish home.
As a mother and housewif e a woman f inds herself investing most of her time and
energy in ensuring the best possible environment to nurture and raise her precious
Jewish f amily. The crown achievement of a woman is her f amily. She is the
irreplaceable foundation and cornerstone of Jewish continuity. Because of this, a
woman has certain H alachically defi ned allowances that make prayer less intrusive and
interf ering with her role at home. I t would be an enormous error to say women are
exempt f rom prayer. Women in f act are always praying f or the health and welf are
of their loved ones, whether when lighting the candles to greet the Shabbos; by the
ritual of separating dough f rom the Challah; or when rocking their little ones to
sleep. A true Jewish mother is depicted as one who drenches her T ehi lli m quietly in
tears.
With this in mind, let us proceed to outline the H alachi c parameters of womens
obligations in prayer.
The Daily Prayers
During the course of the year, the general f ormat of daily prayer consists of three
main prayers; Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv. These three prayers are recited
throughout the course of the year without exception. The Mussaf Prayer is added

on certain days of the year such as the three f estivals, Pesach, Shavuos and Succos, and
also on Rosh Chodesh. There is an obligation for men to pray these prayers daily and
to get together in groups of at least ten adults to f orm a M i nyan. Women are not
only exempt f rom praying these prayers together with a M i nyan, but what is more
signif icant is that they do not combine together with others to complete a M i nyan.
N evertheless, they do share the benef its of praying with a M i nyan if they choose to
attend. However, historically, women in general did not commonly attend a daily
M i nyan to pray. They did commonly attend prayer in shul on Shabbos and on
f estivals.
Tefilla Obligat ion
There are various opinions and customs as to the extent of a womans obligation in
daily prayer. One opinion is that a woman is required to pray at least one time a
day, but it doesnt have to be Shemoneh E srei . I t could be any Tefilla Ketzara (short
prayer) which conf orms to the basic components

of a T efi lla (prayer).
Sephardi women should pray at least one Shemoneh E srei ; pref erably Shachari s. I f a
woman was unable to pray (daven) Shachari s until Chatzos (midday), she should pray
M i ncha, or at least the Shemoneh E srei of M aari v

A woman who is busy caring f or her children or some other similar situation where

A ni (I thank) contains Praise to H ashem and an Appreciation. A woman can
add a personal Request and with this addition, she has fulf illed her Torah obligation
to pray. This works according to Rav Shlomo Z alman A uerbach ztl even though the
Request comes af ter the Praise and Appreciation. On the other hand, Rav Chai m
Kanievsk y shli ta is quoted as saying that the Request must be in-between the Praise
and Appreciation. Rav M oshe Shternbuch shlita points out that one who wishes to
consider this her prayer for the purpose of f ulf illing her Torah obligation must
have explicit intent to f ulf ill her M i tzvah.

Bi rchas H amazon is another way a woman can f ulf ill her obligation to pray. I n Bi rchas
H amazon all three components of tefi l l a are included. One would be required to
have intent that this should count towards her obligation to pray.
However, since women are not supposed to eat before praying (daveni ng), how
would it be possible f or a woman to f ulf ill her requirement of T efi lla with Bi rchas
H amazon? Perhaps this is only a practical solution f or a woman who is not well and
she is required to eat breakf ast f or health reasons. Such a woman can f ulf ill her
obligation of Tefi lla with Bi rchas H amazon if shes not well enough to daven as usual.

Women customarily recite all these three blessings including A l N eti llas Y adayi m,

Ein KElokeinu and Pit t um Haket ores
Women do not commonly recite the recital of Ein K Elokeinu and Pittum
Haketores as it is mainly for men to recite f or the M itzvah of Torah study. Since
women are not obligated to study Torah per se, they dont usually recite this portion
as part of their personal prayer.
Tefillas Mussaf
The Posk i m (authorities on H alachic matters) discuss whether women are obligated
in the M ussaf prayers of Rosh Chodesh and the f estivals. Since the Korban M ussaf was
brought f rom the Shek ali m coin donations which men are obligated and women are
exempt, the question arises whether women were included in the M i tzvah to pray
(daven) T efi llas M ussaf. Rebbe A k i va E i ger ztl in his notes to Shulchan A ruch

writes
that it is customary for women to recite the Shemoneh E srei of M ussaf in addition to
Shemoneh E srei of Shachari s and M i ncha. Rav Ben T ziyone A bba Shaul ztl , concurs with
this opinion even for Sephardi c women. Rav Ovadiah Y osef shli ta maintains that it is
better for women not recite T efi llas M ussaf on their own. They should rather listen
to the Shali ach T zi bbur and f ulf ill the M i tzvah through listening. He adds that if a

Davening Shemoneh Esrei while St anding or
Sit t ing
I t is always pref erable to pray (daven) Shemoneh E srei while one is standing in one
place. However, at times it becomes necessary to allow Shemoneh E srei to be recited
while seated. I f one doesnt have enough time in the day to pray bef ore traveling
one can use the time during travel to pray (daven) Shemoneh E srei even while seated.
I f however a woman knows that she could pray (daven) most of davening up until
Shemoneh E srei and then pray (daven) Shemoneh E srei while traveling and seated, she

This is true even if this will prevent her f rom being able to be Somech Geulah

Act ivit ies one must Refrain from before
Davening
A woman who prays (davens) at home should not involve herself in any activities
bef ore praying (daveni ng) f irst. This includes activities that take time to perform such
as many household chores. She may however perform activities that do not take
time such as turning the washing machine on, when everything was already placed
inside the washer the night bef ore. I f a woman needs to care for her young children
to help f eed them breakfast or get them of f to school, she may do so even if this
will delay her davening. I f taking care of her childrens needs takes up all her time
f or davening, thats a priority, which exempt s her from that prayer altogether.
A woman who serves her husband breakf ast is also considered a priority in prayer
and she should not delay him because of her prayer.
Eat ing before Praying (Davening)
There is a H al acha (Jewish Law) that anyone who is already Bar/ Bat M i tzvah that
they not eat or drink in the morning before praying (daveni ng) f irst. Children under
that age may eat bef ore praying (daveni ng) even if they are physically strong enough
to wait to eat breakf ast until after praying (daveni ng). The general M i tzvah of Chi nuch
(training children in M i tzvos at age-appropriate times) doesnt apply to eating bef ore
praying (daveni ng), just like with regard to eating bef ore Ki ddush on Shabbos

Theref ore, children may eat breakf ast before satisf ying their requirement in the
M i tzvah of T efi lla (prayer).
Girls Who Pray (Daven) in School
Girls who are already Bas M i tzvah who pray (daven) in school and do not have time
to eat breakf ast there, may recite a short T efi lla (prayer) at home before leaving f or
school allowing them to eat breakf ast before davening the rest of T efi llas Shacharis.
The short T efi l l a (prayer) should consist of 3 parts as explained earlier in this lesson.

Kiddush on Shabbos: Eat ing before Kiddush
On Shabbos the law is that one may not eat or drink anything before Ki ddush

There is also a prohibition that one should not eat or drink before praying

. Beverages that are drunk mainly f or their health benef it and not f or the
sake of enjoyment are not prohibited before praying (daveni ng) Shachari s in the
morning. For example, cof f ee is a drink that people usually drink to help them
f unction better in the morning and is commonly drunk bef ore praying (daveni ng).
When one wishes to drink or eat something on Shabbos morning, one is only
allowed to drink something before Ki ddush if one is presently not allowed to eat a
meal yet. Since the M i tzvah of Ki ddush requires that it be accompanied by a meal
(Ki ddush Bemak om Seudah) one only becomes obligated in the M i tzvah of Ki ddush at
such a time. Since one may not eat a meal bef ore praying (daveni ng) in the morning,
at that time the obligation of Ki ddush has not yet begun because of the prohibition
to eat a meal bef ore praying (daveni ng), thus creating a leniency allowing one to drink
something bef ore Ki ddush. Accordingly, a woman that intends to pray (daven)
Shachari s later in the morning may drink something bef ore Ki ddush on Shabbos
since she anyhow may not partake in a meal until af ter Shachari s. On the other hand
women who generally f ulf ill their obligation to pray by reciting just a short prayer as
mentioned earlier in this lesson, Rav Shlomo Z alman A uerbach ztl rules that such
women become obligated in Ki ddush since they already satisf ied their obligation of
prayer. I f such a woman wants to drink something on Shabbos morning bef ore
Ki ddush should be caref ul not to recite any blessing before drinking on Shabbos
morning. Otherwise, they would become obligated in Ki ddush since they already
f ulf illed their obligation to pray and as a result they would become obligated to
recite Ki ddush f irst.
