PREFACE The Pro/ENGINEER User Guides describe all of Pro/ENGINEERs functionality and how it is used. They have common structure and style conventions, described below. The manuals are designed with two purposes in mind: To help you quickly learn to make productive use of Pro/ENGINEER To describe the more advanced uses of the system It has been assumed that you are familiar with your workstation, and have some knowledge of your operating system.
Pro/ENGINEER DOCUMENTATION
Documentation is divided into several manuals which together comprise a comprehensive guide to Pro/ENGINEER. Each manual deals with a major function of the software, and you can usually find which manual you need by first looking at the title. If not, there are indices corresponding to each book, and there is also a Master Indices that indexes the entire Pro/ENGINEER document family. A complete list of Pro/ENGINEER user guides can be found in Chapter 1 of the Fundamentals of Pro/ENGINEER.
USING THESE MANUALS
To find information in the manuals quickly, become familiar with the aids provided: Table of Contents - A Table of Contents is provided at the beginning of each document with all chapter titles and the section headings of each chapter. Use the Table of Contents to familiarize yourself with the layout of each document. Labels Interspersed along the left side of pages are labels. They are for locating information within a general section of the Guide by quickly scanning the column. Bleeding Tabs Chapter headings, on bleeding tabs, are on the right side of each page. These help you quickly locate a particular chapter of the document. Indices Indices containing Pro/ENGINEER commands and keywords are provided for every document. Master Indices A master index of commands and keywords is provided showing the document and page number where the item is located.
CONVENTIONS
In order to clarify the discussion of various topics, the following conventions have been employed throughout all the manuals: Boldface Type indicates a menu option (Part). However, only when the name refers to the actual option will it appear in bold type. UPPERCASE Indicates the name of a menu (PART).
[Bolt]
When you need to enter information using the keyboard, it will appear [between two brackets in courier font like this]. Type everything between the square brackets exactly as shown. Words between the <> symbol indicate the name of a keyboard key. When referencing other sections of the document, it will appear in italics like this. When something is being emphasized, it will appear in bold italics like this.
NOTE: Important information that should not be overlooked will appear in notes like this.
All mouse clicks assume that the mouse has been configured as right-handed.
COMMON TERMS
There are a few very important terms that are used frequently in the User Guide; they are defined here. A full glossary of Pro/ENGINEER terms appears in Appendix B of Fundamentals of Pro/ENGINEER. Choose Select a menu option by placing the arrow cursor on the option, and when it is highlighted, pressing the left mouse button. Mode An environment in which Pro/ENGINEER allows you to perform a certain group of closely related functions (e.g. Drawing). Model A part or an assembly. Object An assembly, part, drawing, format, layout, case study, sketch, etc. Pick Select an item on the screen by clicking the left mouse button.
