Lake Erie Day at Boat Show

Visitors to the Progressive Mid-America Boat Show at Clevelands I-X Center can learn about some of the major issues facing Lake Erie Jan. 1721 at the Ohio Sea Grant booth. Sea Grant experts will be available to discuss harmful algal blooms, invasive species, dead zones, and climate change, along with educational opportunities available at Stone Laboratory, Ohio State Universitys Island Campus on Lake Erie. Visitors can support Stone Labs research, education, and outreach efforts by purchasing admission on Jan. 21, Lake Erie Day. The events managing organization, Lake Erie Marine Trades Association (LEMTA), donates $1 from every admission ticket purchased that day to Stone Lab student scholarships. The show provides an incredible opportunity for students, teachers, and the general public to have their questions answered and interact with scientists from Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab who are working on Lake Erie, says Dr. Jeff Reutter, Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab Director. Throughout the weekend, experts will be available at the Ohio Sea Grant booth near the Fish Stage (booths 129 & 130) to answer questions about how to become an Ohio Clean Boater, what causes harmful algal blooms, what to do with unwanted medicines, and the Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! campaign that aims to prevent the introduction of new aquatic invasive species into the Great Lakes. The following Sea Grant experts will also be available from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 at the Ohio Sea Grant booth: Ohio Sea Grant Director Dr. Jeff Reutter Ohio Sea Grant Fisheries Extension Specialist Tory Gabriel Stone Lab Education & Outreach Coordinator Dr. Kristin Stanford Stone Lab Research Coordinator Justin Chaffin Ohio Clean Marinas Coordinator Sarah OrlandoChildren ages 17 and under can make their own Lake Erie walleye lure at the booth. College and advanced high school students can learn more about summer classes at Stone Lab, and teachers can plan science field trips for their classes or find out more about educator classes available at the lab. For more details and tickets, visit clevelandboatshow. com. Ohio Sea Grants participation at the Progressive Mid-America Boat Show reminds us that everyone plays a role in our stewardship of Lake Erie, explains Ken Alvey, LEMTA President. From the Clean Marina Program to the challenges of Asian carp, protecting Ohios most important natural resource is job #1 for the Ohio Sea Grant Program. Lake Erie Day at the boat show brings hands-on science to our visitors and helps teach them how to protect and preserve our Great Lake. Ohio State Universitys Ohio Sea Grant Program is part of NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 32 Sea Grant programs dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources. For information on Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab, visit ohioseagrant.osu.edu or contact Sarah Orlando, Ohio Sea Grant, at 419.609.4120, orlando.42@osu.edu.

BY DONNA LUEKE The Chicago Tribune has named it one of the 60 mustsee worldwide events for 2013. The Daytime television network featured it as one of four top travel destinations in 2013 (along with Turkey, Rio de Janeiro and Sri Lanka). It is the Bicentennial Celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie, and the epicenter is the Lake Erie Islands area of the north coast. So forgo plans for a summer vacation and get the guest room ready, because this is where it is happening. Perrys Monument and Victory Center on Put-in-Bay will be the location for many of the activities from late August through September 10. The Celebration will include a fleet of Tall Ships in an historic recreation of the Battle of Lake Erie and Port Festivals in waterfront cities in the U.S. and Canada. Visitors will be able to tour the ships,

enlist as crew members in the reenactment, or be part of the Bicentennial Fleet or Militia. There will be a parade of boats; a performance by the Ohio State University marching band; a Regency Ball; presentations on the War of 1812 in history music, dance, fashion, film and art; a military fly-over; a Boy Scout encampment; Lights of Peace harbor illumination and many other events at Put-in-Bay and throughout the region. For a schedule of activities, for more information and to see how you can be a part of the Celebration, see www.battleoflakeerie-bicentennial.com. Firelands Regional Medical Center restricting visitors

In an effort to protect patients, their families and staff this flu season, Firelands Regional Medical Center has begun restricting visitors to people 18 and older and immediate family or immediate support persons. Firelands Regional Medical Center also asks that anyone experiencing flu symptoms (fever, chills, headache, cough, sore throat, muscle aches) refrain from visiting any patient in the hospital. Many patients are highly susceptible to infection. As seasonal influenza continues to unfold in the community, it is possible restrictions at Firelands Regional Medical Center will change. If you are planning to see a patient in the hospital, go to www.firelands.com for the most current information about visitor restrictions.

Origins of Bessie may have been discovered

Perhaps the beginnings of the legend of South Bass Bessie have been discovered! Don Poppe of Port Clinton found this fossil on a rock in the north parking lot at Waterworks Park and snapped it with his camera. It is the 5th rock from the east in the north parking lot, in case you want to explore the site yourself. St. John Arena, NOT at Value City Arena, but at Oak Harbor High School on Friday, Feb. 1, starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale and going fast in the main office at Oak Harbor High School. Adult tickets are $8 and student tickets are $5. They are sold daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Understandably, they expect this match to be a sellout. Joyful Connections helps keep children safe

BY DONNA LUEKE The first thing you notice is the sunny nature of the place and of the staff. The next thing you notice is the great selection of toys and games. Through a childs eyes, the visitation rooms at Joyful Connections must be welcoming and inviting. For a child whose parents and families are going through troubled times, Joyful Connections must seem like a wonderful respite. The mission of Joyful Connections in Oak Harbor is to provide a healthy, safe, and home-like environment where children can interact with family members in a non-judgmental setting. Children of all ages, from newborn to age 17, are served. Joyful Connections was founded in October of 2008. Judge Bruce Winters perceived the need and the Leadership Ottawa County class developed the plan. Since that time, Joyful Connections staff have hosted 2300 visits, 4500 hours of family time. Currently the four part-time staff and nine volunteers supervise visits for children from non-custodial parents, grandparents and siblings from an area that extends beyond the boundaries of Ottawa County. There are always two staff present at each visitation. Sheila Powell, Fiscal Operations Director, says that referrals come from various courts, from Childrens Services, or even from self-referrals. Ric Powers, new Executive Director at Joyful Connections in Oak Harbor, describes the efforts of Joyful Connections to accommodate families: Anytime anyone wants a visit, we can schedule it. Powers, who resides in Oak Harbor, has over 20 years experience in the social service realm. He has been very impressed with the judges and magistrates in Ottawa County. The facility is set up to keep the visiting parties from meeting and interacting inappropriately. We offer no opinions, just record what is taking place, like if the family members are showing up on time, says Powers. There are no televisions or video games at Joyful Connections, to encourage family members to spend quality time interacting. It is interesting to watch a child show a parent how to play checkers, said Powers. Powell is grateful for the generosity of the community. Except for a copier and computer, everything at the facility has been donated. On Feb. 11 there is an Open House at Joyful Connections from 5-7 p.m., to welcome Powers and because we want everyone to know what we are doing. We always need volunteers and board members, says Powers. And, as every parent knows, there is always a need for new toys. Joyful Connections is at 8200 W. State Route 163, 419-621-3992 or 419-798-9600 ext. 0 Oak Harbor. Their website We put the TLC into your event! is www.joyfulconnections. com. Riverview remembers
BY DONNA LUEKE At Riverview Health Care Center in Oak Harbor when the Christmas tree decorations come off the lobby tree, the tree is redecorated with individualized memorial ornaments dedicated to residents who have died in the past year. The ornaments often reflect the interests of the one remembered. Decorations on and inside this years ornaments include golf tees, the Chicago skyline, bingo mementos, a hat and feathers, bowling pins and an OSU emblem. The tradition was started several years ago by the staff of Riverview. Staff members each design and make an ornament that commemorates the life of the departed resident. This past Sunday, in addition to the hanging of the ornaments, there was a memorial service at the Riverview chapel. Melany Bonell, social worker, coordinates the service. At the simple service Bonell played a beautiful piano number. Music and readings and a list of those departed were shared. We also invite families and staff to share memories, said Bonell. Families gathered after the service around the tree for refreshments and memories. It was a gentle and tender afternoon.

Free firewood available at East Harbor and Catawba Island State Parks
After the non-native Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was discovered at some Ohio State Parks in western Ohio, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry and Ohio State Parks formed a partnership to remove the effected ash trees. The Division of Forestry brings a level of expertise to this project that allows the infested trees to be removed safely, quickly and in a cost-effective way from the state parks, said ODNR Deputy Director Glen Cobb. While it is disappointing to lose the ash trees, their removal is necessary to protect the safety of our visitors, which is our biggest priority. Approximately 500-700 ash trees will be removed from East Harbor State Park, Catawba Island State Park and Maumee Bay State Park. Ash tree removal at East Harbor, Catawba and Maumee Bay State Parks will be completed, weather-permitting, before the spring camping season. The leftover wood from the trees is free to any individual at each of the three state parks in designated areas from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week. All interested individuals should contact the park offices at East Harbor or Maumee Bay for more information. It is recommended that firewood from the ash trees be burned locally by April. The park managers for the three state parks would like to thank the Division of Forestry for their help in removing the EAB infected trees. SNOWMAN CHALLENGE AT ICS

The snowman challenge was set by Immaculate Conception School Principal Connie Snyder. The challenge given to the students was to see which class could build the best snowman during recess. During the noon hour the kids took to the snowy yard with a bag of snowman necessities in hand. Each class worked together to create an icy new friend and finished confident of their inevitable victory. In the end, it was decided the contest was just too hard to judge. A free jeans day was given to all.

Ontario fishing company fined $5,000 for illegally fishing in Ohio

Pisces Fisheries Inc. of Wheatley, Ontario, was fined $5,000 for fishing illegally in Ohio waters, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Pisces Fisheries was sentenced by the Ottawa County Municipal Court in Port Clinton on Dec. 21 by Magistrate Louis P. Wargo III. This was a great multi-agency response, said Gino Barna, ODNR Division of Wildlife law supervisor for the Lake Erie Law Enforcement Unit. Gill nets have not been a major issue on Lake Erie in recent years because of the cooperation with other agencies. Because of this support network, incidents like this do not go undetected, and Ohios resources are better protected. The charges were the result of the Adco II, a gill net tug owned by Pisces Fisheries, fishing with gill nets in Ohio waters on two separate occasions. On May 5, the ODNR Division of Wildlife, with the assistance of the U.S. Border Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Station Marblehead and ODNR Division of Watercraft, five nets belonging to the Adco II were found in Ohio waters north of North Bass Island. On May 9, five more nets set by the Adco II were found by the U.S. Border Patrol south of Middle Sister Island in Ohio waters. The USCG monitored the nets throughout the night and boarded the Adco II the following morning. Wildlife investigators from the Lake Erie Law Enforcement Unit investigated the incidents. Two charges were filed for possessing gill nets in Ohio, and two charges were filed for fishing with commercial nets in Ohio without a commercial license. The use of gill nets is not a legal method for taking fish in Ohio. Although commercial fishermen may use other types of nets, such as trap nets and seines, gill nets were outlawed in Ohio in 1983. Anyone who observes or suspects wildlife violations are occurring may report illegal activity by calling the Turn-In-A-Poacher (TIP) hotline toll free at 1-800-POACHER.

Help your children avoid student debt burden

Its not so easy being a college kid these days. The job market for recent graduates has been shaky while, at the same time, students are leaving school with more debt than ever before. If you have children who will someday be attending college, should you be worried? You might indeed have cause for concern. Americans now owe more on student loans than on credit cards, according to the Federal Bank of New York, the U.S. Department of Education and other sources. For the college class of 2011, the most recent year for which figures are available, the average student loan debt was about $26,500, according to the Institute for College Access and Successs Project on Student Debt. This type of debt load, coupled with the struggles to find a well-paying job commensurate with their education, is causing many recent graduates to get off on the wrong foot in terms of developing savings and investment strategies that could help them throughout their lives. residents in certain states. A 529 plan, while valuable, is not the only college savings vehicle available. You may also want to consider a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. However, a Coverdell accounts contribution limits are much lower than those of a 529 plan. You could also establish a custodial account, known as an UGMA or UTMA, which offers some tax benefits and no contribution limits. ing progress toward your retirement savings will require creative thinking and both you and your children may have to make some sacrifices along the way. But the ultimate goals a college degree that isnt one big IOU and a comfortable retirement are worth the effort. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Nonetheless, while these vehicles may help you save and invest for college, they may also divert resources that you might have used for other financial goals such as a comfortable retirement. Of course, its not an either-or situation theres nothing stopping you from contributing to a 529 plan, Coverdell account or custodial account along with your 401(k) and IRA. Clearly, though, it will take discipline and perseverance So, what can you do? on your part to save and invest for both your childrens edIf you want to help your kids pay for college, you may ucation and your own retirement. Home Instead Senior Care serving Erie, Huron and Ottawa Counties is celebrating seven years in business. Their company was founded in January 2006 as part of a franchise network that has become the largest of its kind in the world. Home Instead Senior Care is the worlds leading provider of non-medical home care and companionship services for seniors, with more than 875 independently owned and operated franchises in 15 countries and 16 markets, spanning four continents. Non-medical services include companionship, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping and escort for errands and shopping. The companys CAREGiversSM are screened, trained, bonded, insured and have successfully passed thorough criminal background checks. Ceinwen and Tom Price saw a need for this quality service after experiencing the stresses of caring for a parent with Alzheimers disease. It is our privilege to help families that are caring for their elders, Mrs. Price stated. Since beginning our services in 2006, Home Instead Senior Care has proudly assisted 475 seniors in the place they call home. National demographics help tell the story of the local offices growth. By 2030, nearly 20 percent of the population will be over 65, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. To meet this emerging need, more than 760,000 personal and home care aides in the United States currently care for other individuals, mostly older adults, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This job category has increased from 701,218 jobs in 2004 to 767,260 in 2006, a 9.4 percent increase in just two years, according to the Labor Department. By 2016 this category is projected to grow more than 50 percent, the Labor Department reported. Home Instead Senior Cares more than 65,000 U.S. CAREGivers represent about 8.5 percent of the workforce in this U.S. job sector. Home Instead Senior Care has locally built a staff of 65 CAREGivers, and five office staff. We owe our success in large part to our dedicated staff, Price said. The strong company brand and reputation have helped establish Home Instead Senior Care locally, Price said. The first advantage Home Instead Senior Care gave us was the opportunity to own the business, which was tremendous. Second, the companys franchise formula provided us with a successful model, which served as a road map to help the business thrive. Home Instead Senior Care currently is involved in the Walk to End Alzheimers Committee, The American Cancer Society, Magruder Hospital Auxiliary Board and the Ottawa County Task Force on Aging, Firelands Positive People and Catholic Charities. .
