BY DONNA LUEKE The Chicago Tribune has named it one of the 60 mustsee worldwide events for 2013. The Daytime television network featured it as one of four top travel destinations in 2013 (along with Turkey, Rio de Janeiro and Sri Lanka). It is the Bicentennial Celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie, and the epicenter is the Lake Erie Islands area of the north coast. So forgo plans for a summer vacation and get the guest room ready, because this is where it is happening. Perrys Monument and Victory Center on Put-in-Bay will be the location for many of the activities from late August through September 10. The Celebration will include a fleet of Tall Ships in an historic recreation of the Battle of Lake Erie and Port Festivals in waterfront cities in the U.S. and Canada. Visitors will be able to tour the ships,
enlist as crew members in the reenactment, or be part of the Bicentennial Fleet or Militia. There will be a parade of boats; a performance by the Ohio State University marching band; a Regency Ball; presentations on the War of 1812 in history music, dance, fashion, film and art; a military fly-over; a Boy Scout encampment; Lights of Peace harbor illumination and many other events at Put-in-Bay and throughout the region. For a schedule of activities, for more information and to see how you can be a part of the Celebration, see www.battleoflakeerie-bicentennial.com. Some of the ornaments designed by Riverview staff in honor of residents who have passed.
Riverview remembers
BY DONNA LUEKE At Riverview Health Care Center in Oak Harbor when the Christmas tree decorations come off the lobby tree, the tree is redecorated with individualized memorial ornaments dedicated to residents who have died in the past year. The ornaments often reflect the interests of the one remembered. Decorations on and inside this years ornaments include golf tees, the Chicago skyline, bingo mementos, a hat and feathers, bowling pins and an OSU emblem. The tradition was started several years ago by the staff of Riverview. Staff members each design and make an ornament that commemorates the life of the departed resident. This past Sunday, in addition to the hanging of the ornaments, there was a memorial service at the Riverview chapel. Melany Bonell, social worker, coordinates the service. At the simple service Bonell played a beautiful piano number. Music and readings and a list of those departed were shared. We also invite families and staff to share memories, said Bonell. Families gathered after the service around the tree for refreshments and memories. It was a gentle and tender afternoon.

Free firewood available at East Harbor and Catawba Island State Parks
After the non-native Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was discovered at some Ohio State Parks in western Ohio, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry and Ohio State Parks formed a partnership to remove the effected ash trees. The Division of Forestry brings a level of expertise to this project that allows the infested trees to be removed safely, quickly and in a cost-effective way from the state parks, said ODNR Deputy Director Glen Cobb. While it is disappointing to lose the ash trees, their removal is necessary to protect the safety of our visitors, which is our biggest priority. Approximately 500-700 ash trees will be removed from East Harbor State Park, Catawba Island State Park and Maumee Bay State Park. Ash tree removal at East Harbor, Catawba and Maumee Bay State Parks will be completed, weather-permitting, before the spring camping season. The leftover wood from the trees is free to any individual at each of the three state parks in designated areas from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week. All interested individuals should contact the park offices at East Harbor or Maumee Bay for more information. It is recommended that firewood from the ash trees be burned locally by April. The park managers for the three state parks would like to thank the Division of Forestry for their help in removing the EAB infected trees. Park Managers are encouraging people to donate a tree to replace the ash trees that will be removed. People interested in giving a financial gift or donating a tree may contact the individual park offices for more information. East Harbor State Park and Catawba Island State Park: 419-734-4424 x 2 Maumee Bay State Park: 419-836-7758 ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR website at ohiodnr.com.

Home Instead Senior Care serving Erie, Huron and Ottawa Counties is celebrating seven years in business. Their company was founded in January 2006 as part of a franchise network that has become the largest of its kind in the world. Home Instead Senior Care is the worlds leading provider of non-medical home care and companionship services for seniors, with more than 875 independently owned and operated franchises in 15 countries and 16 markets, spanning four continents. Non-medical services include companionship, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping and escort for errands and shopping. The companys CAREGiversSM are screened, trained, bonded, insured and have successfully passed thorough criminal background checks. Ceinwen and Tom Price saw a need for this quality service after experiencing the stresses of caring for a parent with Alzheimers disease. It is our privilege to help families that are caring for their elders, Mrs. Price stated. Since beginning our services in 2006, Home Instead Senior Care has proudly assisted 475 seniors in the place they call home. National demographics help tell the story of the local offices growth. By 2030, nearly 20 percent of the population will be over 65, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. To meet this emerging need, more than 760,000 personal and home care aides in the United States currently care for other individuals, mostly older adults, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This job category has increased from 701,218 jobs in 2004 to 767,260 in 2006, a 9.4 percent increase in just two years, according to the Labor Department. By 2016 this category is projected to grow more than 50 percent, the Labor Department reported. Home Instead Senior Cares more than 65,000 U.S. CAREGivers represent about 8.5 percent of the workforce in this U.S. job sector. Home Instead Senior Care has locally built a staff of 65 CAREGivers, and five office staff. We owe our success in large part to our dedicated staff, Price said. The strong company brand and reputation have helped establish Home Instead Senior Care locally, Price said. The first advantage Home Instead Senior Care gave us was the opportunity to own the business, which was tremendous. Second, the companys franchise formula provided us with a successful model, which served as a road map to help the business thrive. Home Instead Senior Care currently is involved in the Walk to End Alzheimers Committee, The American Cancer Society, Magruder Hospital Auxiliary Board and the Ottawa County Task Force on Aging, Firelands Positive People and Catholic Charities. .
