GAS (Great American Sound Company) came out of SAE.

James Bongiorno, a designer at SAE, created a product called the Ampzilla, which was originally designed as a construction project for Popular Electronics Magazine. There was sufficient demand for the product that he left SAE and founded GAS. Over the years, he designed an entire family of preamplifiers and amplifiers. G.A.S. The Great American Sound Company Inc. *ONE OF THE BEST AMPS.EVER MADE* Ampzilla was created by world famous designer, James Bongiorno in 1974. At the time, James was the director of engineering at SAE. Prior to that he had been the director of engineering at Dynaco where he created the renowned Dynaco 400. While at SAE, James conceived the concept of the full dual differential full complementary amplifier topology which has since, for the last 27 years, become the defacto world standard road map for virtually all high end power amplifiers made today. Ampzilla was originally designed as a construction project for Popular Electronics Magazine. However, the response was so overwhelming, after the rave reviews, that James left SAE to found "The Great American Sound Co. Inc." (GAS CO.). The rest was history. The Ampzilla circuitry was a refinement of the original circuit created at SAE, hence the Ampzilla, which has become one of the most FAMOUS Amplifiers still known today. And for under $1600, one can still acquire "One of the Best, 400-Watts, 2-Channel Amplifiers ever built in history. "They Just Don't Make Amplifiers like this anymore for this price range". This will Not last Long. One thing is for sure. The cost of todays gear has gone astronomical to say the least. It is just simply not possible to make the kind of super quality 200 watt amplifier today for the same price that existed 20 years ago that is, with the commensurate attention to detail that audio consumers expect today. However, some companies have definitely gone to the moon with megabuck pricing that is positively insane and an insult to consumers in general. James has always been known for producing the finest gear at the most reasonable prices so that the maximum number of people could afford to own them, Hence this Ampzilla 2-Channel Amp.. James commitment has always been to make a super quality 200 watt amplifier with NO limitations, the retail price must be in the neighborhood of $3000.00 per channel when producing a MONOBLOC in terms of today prices. Twenty-Seven years ago James wrote a brochure describing the "Ultimate Amplifier" while at SAE. Of course, every engineer believes that their current work is the ultimate machine. However, it should be understood that this "Ultimate" design could only be as of the moment. The truth is that there never has been nor will there ever be an absolute "ultimate" perfect amplifier. Hard as we try, we get closer and closer but in reality, well never approach perfection. Therein lies the enigma. Who defines what is perfect? What

are the rules, the conditions, the standards, etc. The original Ampzilla set a standard, which has been copied, in topological form, for almost the last 30 years. Obviously something must have been right about it in the first place

On the front part of the bottom chasis piece is a three-position phase-reversing power switch (Off/On/Off), two speaker-line fuses, and a green LED Power On indicator. On the back part of the main chassis are the line cord, line fuse, two sets of binding posts for the outputs, and a pair of phono jacks for the signal inputs.

Ampzilla has a front protrusion housing the meters and meter switch, In both cases, white end caps, contrasting with the black anodized chassis pieces, fit over the end of a U sections and are solidly screwed to them to hold the whole unit together. Solid sized nuts and machine screws are used throughout Ampzilla, to add stiffness and the rigidity to already awesome chassis design.

The rectifier bridge and four supply fuses are mounted on a bracket that connects the ground sides of each filter capacitor to the chassis ground.

The meters are calibrated in RMS watts into 8 ohms with a sine waive and relative dB with 0 dB equal to 200 watts. The meters are average-responding and appear to have somewhat faster ballistics than a standard VU meter. DECADE range switching is very desireable for easy reading of power on the lower ranges, and a 200-milliwatt full scale is a very handy reminder of the fact that a lot of listening on effecient speakers take place down in the 1-100 mW region. In short, the conclusion is inescapable. Ampzilla is the best sounding commercially available bipolar solid-state amplifier. The low end is incredibily tight and solid, the mid range clean and defined, and the high end is light, airy and virtually free of edginess and grit. When listening in comparison to "OTHER", good solid-state amplifiers, there is a feeling that their sound isn't as transparent and an amplifier per se is more identifiably in the reproducing chain. In summary, Ampzilla is unquestionably in the state-of-the-art class and takes its place among a small group of fine, high-

end, amplifiers that really do make reproducing music sound more like live music.
