Quick Guide To Hot Water

Quick Guide To Hot Water

Read and follow the printed Installation and Operating Manual that came with your water heater for model-specific information, important warnings and safety notices. Follow all local codes. If you lack the necessary skills to install, troubleshoot, or repair your water heater, get help from a qualified person. The Hybrid Gas Water Heater is a Condensing Power Vented Product that must be vented using approved PVC materials and installed near a drain (or use a condensation pump). Read the Installation Manual for complete venting and installation details.

Youll need common plumbing tools and pipe joint compound (or Teflon tape) approved for fuel gas. Youll also need gas leak detection solution. You can use childrens soap bubbles or hand dishwashing soap mixed with water as gas leak detection solution.

Most codes require the water heater to be installed in a metal drain pan or on a platform. See the Installation Manual for information about sizing the metal drain pan and other installation details.

2
Removing the existing water heater: Turn the gas supply to the old water heater off at the manual shut off valve. Also, turn the gas control knob to the OFF position. Disconnect the gas line at the union (youll need two wrenches for that). Remove the gas pipe from the old water heater you may be able to reuse it. Save the union, too. Confirm that your new water heater matches your gas supply type. Open a nearby hot water faucet and let the water run until its cool. Then shut off the cold water supply to the water heater. (Leaving the water faucet open will help the tank drain). Drain the tank by attaching a hose to the drain valve. Place the other end of the hose in a drain or outside. (You could also use buckets). Open the water heaters drain valve. While the water heater is draining, read the Installation Manual that came with your new water heater. Disconnect the water lines from the water heater.

The Hybrid Gas Water Heater requires a properly polarized* 120VAC, 60 Hz electrical supply. A 7-foot cord with three-pronged plug is supplied (extension cords are not permitted) and the receptacle must be properly grounded. DO NOT use a GFCI outlet. Follow local codes. See the Installation Manual for details.*See the Troubleshooting Section for more information about polarized receptacles.

Hybrid Gas Water Heater Installation

Install the gas pipe using pipe joint compound (or Teflon tape) approved for fuel gas on all threaded connections. Keep the pipe joint compound from getting inside the gas line or gas control valve. Make sure the gas line is piped with hard pipe, such as iron or steel pipe. Do not use flexible gas line connectors. Reconnect the gas line union.

Since this a high efficiency condensing unit, it will produce some water when the burner is running. A drain or condensation pump must be located close to the water heater to allow the condensate to be drained away. Do not connect the condensation drain hose to the T&P discharge pipe. See Installation Manual for details about condensate.

It is very important that the condensate drain hose be installed below the exhaust elbow.

This water heater must be calibrated when it is first put into service. The calibration procedure measures certain details of your installation and automatically sets internal control parameters. DO NOT skip this step. See the Installation Manual for complete details.

Be certain that the vent has cooled before handling. Disconnect the vent pipe from the draft hood. Remove the old vent piping. The Hybrid Gas Water Heater uses plastic PVC pipe. DO NOT use metal vent pipe. Gas water heaters must have free access to adequate combustion air and must be properly vented. The Installation Manual will explain these requirements, and they must be followed for safe operation.

Turn the gas supply valve ON. Brush soap solution on all gas line connections and look for bubbles. Use plenty of soap solution. Gas is under low pressure, and it may take some time for bubbles to appear. If you see any bubbles, correct the leak and retest. Do not check with an open flame.

This unit requires a properly polarized 120 volt, single phase AC only. The wall socket must be properly grounded. Do not use a GFCI outlet.

3
Almost all homes have check valves in the plumbing system and almost all homes now need a thermal expansion tank installed near the water heater. The thermal expansion tank is attached to the cold water inlet line. To operate properly, the expansion tank must be pressurized with air. Refer to the thermal expansion tanks instructions for details.

During the calibration procedure, open a hot water faucet and leave it on. Plug the power cord in and press the On/Off button on the control panel to start the unit.

The calibration procedure is an automatic process that will last about six minutes. After a successful calibration the water heater will go into standby mode. If the calibration is not completed successfully, an Error Code (E36) will be shown on the display. If this error occurs, unplug the power cord and repeat the procedure. See the Installation Manual for more information or if the error code repeats.

After the calibration is complete, turn the hot water faucet off. Unplug the power cord, then open the front door and remove the service cap on the heat engine cover panel.

The Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (T&P) is an important safety device. It opens to relieve pressure if the water temperature or pressure in the tank is too high. Use the new T&P that came with your new water heater. Dont reuse the old T&P valve.

4
Remove the top back cover on the shroud. It is held in place by two screws. This will allow easier access to the Inlet and Outlet connections on the water heater. Install the hot and cold water lines. The connections are threaded and require Teflon tape or pipe joint compound approved for potable water. The water heaters connections contain nonmetallic parts. Do not solder the water lines while they are connected to the water heater. Turn the cold water supply back on and check for leaks. Completely reinstall the top back cover on the shroud. NOTE: This water heater has a water filter in the cold water inlet that must be cleaned from time to time. See Installation Manual for details. Open a hot water faucet and let the water run full for at least three minutes to ensure the tank is completely full of water. Check all connections for water leaks. Leaks are almost always due to faulty connections and not a tank leak.

The Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve (T&P) discharge pipe should be terminated near a floor drain with an air gap of no more than six inches between the end of the discharge pipe and the drain. Some localities require terminating the T&P discharge pipe outside. In cold climates, we recommend using a floor drain. In all cases, follow local codes. Read the Installation Manual for important details. Warning: Do not plug or cap the T&P discharge pipe.

8
Use the up and down arrows to set the desired temperature. The recommended temperature setting is 120F. Higher temperatures increase the risk of scalding. See the Installation Manual and labels located on the water heater for important safety information. To change the temperature, press both the up and down buttons at the same time for three seconds to unlock the control. When the control is unlocked, you can set the temperature. If no button is pressed for one minute, the display will lock to prevent tampering (a lock symbol will appear).

Set DIP switch 4 to the OFF position. Completely reinstall the service cap on the heat engine cover panel and close the front door. Plug the power cord in and press the On/Off button. This completes the calibration process.

The Hybrid Gas Water Heater has three operating modes. The unit is automatically set at the factory to 105F in the Energy Saver Mode. There is also a Boost Mode and a Vacation Mode. Refer to the Installation Manual for operating mode details.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Need help? Visit us on the web at www.hotwater101.com for more installation and troubleshooting help. If you need assistance, call the toll-free number which can be found in the Installation Instructions or on the water heaters label. Check the water connections for leaks. Most actual leaks occur at the inlet or outlet water connectionsnot a tank leak. Connect the vent pipe to the Hybrid Gas Water Heater. This water heater is Power Vented and must be vented using approved PVC materials. Read the Installation Manual for complete venting installation information on vent length/ diameter, cementing PVC pipe, other construction details and safety notices. DO NOT use metal vent pipe. Drips from the Temperature and Pressure (T&P) relief valve discharge pipe usually mean you need a thermal expansion tank or your homes water pressure is too high. Warning: Do not plug or cap the T&P discharge pipe. The Installation Manual has a list of Diagnostic Codes and troubleshooting information should an Error Code be displayed. If Error Code E36 is displayed, see the calibration procedure in step 7 above. Refer to the Installation Manual for complete instructions. In a correctly polarized receptacle, the HOT (black) wire is wired to the HOT side of the outlet and the Neutral (white) wire is wired to the Neutral side of the outlet. (See 1C above.) You can check a receptacle with a polarity tester or using a voltmeter. If there is voltage (120V) between the large prong and ground, the polarity of the receptacle is wrong. MAINTENANCE The Installation Manual lists maintenance items that must be performed on this water heater from time to time. The most common maintenance items are: The inlet water filter must be cleaned as needed. The heat exchanger will also need to be flushed from time to time due to lime build up (depending on the quality of the local water supply). Damage caused by lime build up is not covered by warranty. See Installation Manual for complete maintenance instructions and warranty information.
