Hi all, FYI and distribution: Deaf Awareness Course Auckland Deaf Society is hosting a 'Deaf Awareness Course' on Friday 8th February, 2013. It will start at 9am and ends at 1pm. With over 400,000 deaf or hearing impaired people living in New Zealand, it is very likely that you will need to work or socialise with them, so why not give yourself an opportunity to dissolve the barriers between the hearing and the deaf and learn all about the ways you can make a difference in the Deaf Community. This Deaf Awareness Course will be taught by Victoria Lessing, who has over 8 years of experiences offering such training. She is profoundly Deaf, and interpreters will be provided for the workshop. This Deaf Awareness Course will give you an opportunity to equip yourself with skills with work with Deaf individuals and/or groups. It will also teach you how to utilise effective communication strategies. Auckland Deaf Society will offer light refreshments and drinks for all participants. The fee for attending this course is $95 + GST per person. If you have any questions or would like further information, you are welcome to contact Grace or Victoria at any time. Please RSVP to Grace Covey by email ( bookings@auckland-deaf.org.nz ) by 5th February. (If the date doesn't suit you, then let them know as they will be running more Deaf Awareness Courses during 2013) _________________________________________________________________________________________________

Just a quick email to let you know that our four arts therapy programs for children and teens of all abilities (particular provision for those with diverse and complex needs) start next week. We are starting a brand NEW Open Studio art group for Teens (12 plus), continuing with Art on the Spectrum (a group art therapy program for children 6-11 on the Autism spectrum) and Kids Open Studio (aged 6-11, all abilities, with particular provision for diverse and complex needs). We also have a few spaces left in our adult classes. I have attached flyers for the three kids/teens programs we have spaces in (in both PDF and doc.) If you know of any children/teens that may benefit from being a part of a supportive creative social group please feel free to forward on the attached flyers and information, in addition it would be great if you could put the information in your newsletter or on your website. N.B: Parents can pay a high portion of the fees with carer support.
Art on the Spectrum: A structured arts therapy group for six children on the Autism Spectrum (ASD) aged approximately 6-11 years facilitated by two Arts therapists. This group provides the children with a supportive and encouraging ASD friendly environment in which they can individually and collaboratively explore their creativity and develop self-expression. The programme offers opportunities for effective communication and social engagement; the development of peer relationships are encouraged through interactive group art making. The children simultaneously develop skills in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, clay, creative writing, role-play, puppet and mask making. The structure of each session involves group games, individual and group art-making activities, social time (fruit break) as well as end of session discussions and exhibitions. Open Studio Kids (One & Two): This group is open to children of all abilities aged 6 years plus. Kids Open Studio is where an organic approach to learning and group activity is held. The facilitators take the lead from each child encouraging them to make their own decisions and to follow their own topics of interest. They move amongst the children assisting them by suggesting ideas and demonstrating techniques, encouraging them to try new and different ideas and mediums. Each session begins with a check-in and sharing, then an hour and half of art making, followed by a sharing circle and discussion about their creations. These sessions run on a weekly basis during term time and are ongoing. Open Studio Teens: follows similar format to Open Studio Kids but is aimed at teenagers of all abilities aged 12 years plus. The facilitators work to progress art making skills and abilities, and to extend group-held, collective themes of interest on which to base subject matter for art making / creative projects. A supportive and safe environment is provided for teens to form sound and healthy relationships with one another and to share and explore their creative ideas. These sessions run on a weekly basis during term time and are ongoing.
