WELCOME
Its been a long, cold winter but as we approach spring our films are full of life! Hyde Park on Hudson, Hitchcock, Terrence Malicks latest To The Wonder, and Paris Manhattan (our Valentines Day date with UKJF) look at love in its variations, whilst Lore, North London set drama Broken, and Romanian Beyond the Hills all have their own coming-of-age theme. Towards the end of the month we look at later life with Robot and Frank and Vanessa Redgrave in Song for Marion. New to February for your little ones aged 2 to 4 is our Toddler Time shows. Bringing Up Baby continues on a weekly basis and we have a great line-up as ever for Kids Club on Saturday mornings. To celebrate 150 years of the London Underground, our extremely popular From The Archives strand continues with Underground (1928), recently restored by the BFI, and the first appearance of the tube on film! Continuing the Underground theme we are delighted to host our first late night collaboration with Cigarette Burns Cinema - Death Line. Dark City Gallery are back for a one-off show of Bicycle Thieves. Patron Mark Kermode introduces a rare 35mm presentation of La Belle et la Bte followed by a Q&A, and the directors of war-photography doc McCullin will also be hosting a Q&A after their screening. - Neil Rebak, General Manager

Lore (15)
1hr 49. Germany/Australia/UK 2012. Directed by Cate Shortland. With Saskia Rosendahl, Nele Trebs. In German (with English subtitles). Exploring a little discussed aspect of the end of the Second World War, Lore is the story of five siblings who embark on an arduous journey when their Nazi SS parents are taken into Allied custody. Theres a feel of the Post-Apocalypse road movie as the coming-of-age narrative follows the young family as they are forced to confront all they have been taught as they discover a nation trapped in post-war deprivation and denial, and reluctantly fall in with a young jewish survivor named Thomas. Lore is the long-awaited follow-up by Australian director Cate Shortlands astounding debut, Somersault.

Broken (TBC)
Running time TBC. UK 2012. Directed by Rufus Norris. With Eloise Laurence, Cillian Murphy, Tim Roth and Rory Kinnear. Despite the presence of seasoned British stars such as Tim Roth, Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear, the real stand-out performance in this North London set drama is from newcomer Eloise Laurence as the young protagonist. Skunk (Laurence) has a happy life in a cul-de-sac with her older brother and father. One day she witnesses an unprovoked act of violence, and as the consequences of this unfold, so the world around her changes immeasurably. Winner of Best Independent Film and Best Supporting Actor at the 2012 BIFA Awards.

EDUCATION
Our film education and heritage work engages with children, young people and the community throughout the year. Are you an educator? Please visit our website phoenixcinema.co.uk/ education to find out more about our great value workshops and termly screenings for both primary and secondary age pupils. Or email Tara Cleary via education@ phoenixcinema.co.uk for more information.
The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UKs oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all. The other unique aspect of the Phoenix Cinema is that since 1985 it has been a cinema of the community, run by a charitable trust for the community. Saved from the wreckers ball by the formation of The Phoenix Cinema Trust, it is a wholly independent single screen cinema showing the latest independent and foreign films and reinvesting its profits in education work and maintaining this historic building.
