I use as rule of thumb: Major: Missing Requirement Minor: Not complying with the documented requirement Where it gets dicey is, when there are many minors throughout the Quality System. Now if each of these minors are independent of each other, then they would normally remain minors. When several minors (I know, several is ambiguous) are found in various areas being audited, and they relate to the same requirement, then this can be considered a "systemic failure." In which case, you can roll up the minors into a major. Hope this helps.

Major NC - Non-fulfilled requirement, that directly influencing the product/service quality. Ex: Software Configuration Management Minor NC - A small gap in the requirement, that do not significantly impact the product/service quality.

Minor NC's are with respect the a section in the clause . but when In a same clause no. of NC's are recorded/observed, it also lead to Major NC.

Major NC will be raised when it affects the system or may cause a breakdown in the system but Minor NC will be raised when documentation coverage is missing. However, collection of some minor NC may converted into major NC.

Major NCR are classified all the discrepancies that have impact on contractual requirement with particular reference to: a. Safety b. Function and Technical operational requirements defined by contract (statement of work, technical specification and Performance Work statement, Standard Operation Procedure) c. Relaibility, maintainability d. Assembling, intergation, tests e. Modification or deviation form test procedure (qualification and acceptance) approved by customer f. Discrepancy relevent to component or parts Minor NCR are by definition those which cannot be considered major

The Non Conformatory happening in the organisation does not always affect the organisation by cost and time. But can cause a long term damage or may even spoil the whole system. Major NCR and Minor NCR are classified on the basis of discrepancies occured. 1. 2. 3. 4. Safety Functional and technical operational requirements Assembling, integration, tests. Modification/Deviation from test procedure approved by the customer

these all above mentioned four discrepencies comes under Major Non conformatory. Minor Non conformatory includes those activities which are present in the system but is not well in place.

Both Minor & major NC's are against the procedure you are auditing but difference is that In Major NC is against totally system failure where it was supposed to be done , but not happened. Like you are in incoming inspection, your are not measuring against your standard is minor NC , but if you are not measuring or doing incoming inspection its an Major NC.

When system is crashing due to nonconformity, then only it should be termed as major nonconformity. Let us take an example. (i) In an audit, the auditor auditing purchase department finds that one purchase order (out of 20 purchase orders seen by the auditor) was sent to a supplier and the supplier is not in the approved list of suppliers. This particular non-conformity is a minor non-conformity. (ii) In an audit, the auditor finds that seven purchase orders (out of 20 purchase orders seen by the auditor) were sent to those suppliers, who are not in the approved list of suppliers. This nonconformity is major nonconformity. Hope the matter is clear. With best wishes.

In my opinion the difference between a Major and Minor NCR can be understood by a simple example as follows: Internal Audit is not conducted in the Organization, violation of Clause 8.2.2 (Major NCR) Supplier Evaluation for one supplier not found during the audit. (Minor NCR) or can be Observation. Whereas Supplier Evaluation is missed Completely is a Major NCR. Hope this helps to understand. Thank You Sheikh Mohsin Ali

Major NCR: if it is found that you are not carrying out a process or you are not carrying out a process correctly and you are required to do so by your customer or by your own quality management system then this is a major non-conformance. Minor NCR: if it is found that you are carrying out a process and you are carrying it out correctly but it is not clearly documented in your own management system then this is a minor non-conformance.

Internal Auditor: Difference between Minor NCR & Major NCR

Re: Difference between Minor NCR & Major NCR

by B Schreurs - Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 01:41 AM

Example of major NCR and what we did, During an internal audit the internal auditors found out that a important tank was tested several months ago. The calibration of the weight unit was broken, the repair was planned several months ago, but nobody has checked if t was repaired. They found out that due to ilness, the job was open, but the alert on this job was closed. So there could be a risk that we produce not the correct products. During the audit they found evidence that this was the case and they called inmediately the QA manager and the General manager. The QA manager and the general manager stop their work inmediately and advised some specialists to find out what the risk is. Based on our industrial RCM method the risk was high, so the line is stopped for quite a long time and an external company is called in to fixed the problem.

B Schreurs: Just wanted to ask about the follow up of the major NC as described by you. 1) Was it done? 2) What was the outcome? SPecifically as per the RCM method your company follows, did the risk level come down? Its a good case study nevertheless.

When Major NC arrives, The system should be placed and maintained once again. After the completion of Fixed time perid during first time audit with auditee, re-audit should take over for the particular NC and to be confirmed for system in place. After a fixed time frame once again the auditor should come on site. This is how the Major NC's plays a role on Quality system. But in case of minor NC, Only a written statement enough, if it is necessary photograph's can evidenced for the corrctive action made.

A major NCR would be a systematic breakdown where a minor NCR would be a "single" lapse in the system. There are many times you can find a few minors that refer to the same lapse in the system. These can typically be combined into a single NCR provided they are exactly pointing to the same issue or lapse. Whenever multiple single lapses occur in different areas of the system, they are an indication of a systematic breakdown and therefore would constitute a major NCR. When considering a response, a Corrective action must commensurate with the NCR.Appropriate responses to a Major would be further follow-up including adjusting the Internal Audit schedule to increase the frequency in the particular area or process. Here, we should speak of the paramount importance of the training and Internal Audit Process as bigger problems need more effort to correct. Hence we should address and execute these in a more sensible manner in a system and audit process before considering/ calling a NCR as major or minor, especially when it is border line.

As i am a part of Quality Managment for an Aviation Industry MINOR NCR: observation on lapse which do not endager the safety. The single gap in the quality system ,which does not form a part of contractural voilation. The training record of one trainee is missing. The supplier is ordered for the item on one time basis without Auditing the supplier. The certain activities which if not checked can lead to major NCR. The partial fulfillment of an contractual or Regulatory requirment. MAJOR NCR: NON performance of contractual or regulatory requirments. Endangering the safety standards Continous non conformity after audit. Non conformity ending with the complete voilation of Quality system.

Hi, Monor NC can be worked out and reversed easily , as it show some minor gap or negligence and affected the process or compliance, or some supporting documents are not made available, or loop of an excercise s not closed.Where as Major NC need lots of effort as it shows that there is system failure and special attention is required to audit compliance.

performance, durability, interchangeability, reliability, maintainability, effective use or operation, weight or appearance (where a factor), health or safety

But when multiple minor nonconformities occur collectively, they may raise the category to a major or critical nonconformity. Major nonconformity This type of nonconformity may result in failure or materially reduce the usability of the product for the intended purpose (i.e. effective use or operation, weight or appearance (where a factor), health or safety). It can not be completely eliminated or reduced to a minor nonconformity by an approved repair.

NCR is any discrepancy real or apparent detected during and auditing exercise with respect to specific requirements of the product or its relevant documentation. The auditor can now decide if the discrepancy detected is major or minor NCR. Major NCR refers to all discrepancies that have impact on contractual requirement with particular reference to safety in relation to technical specification of products or deviation from tests procedures approved by customer which has an impact on the usability of a product, performance of a service, the integrity of the quality system and/or affect the ability to meet the customers requirements. Minor Nonconformance on the other hand is discrepancies that do not adversely affect the usability of a product, performance of a service, or the integrity of the quality system such as oversights, minor changes to procedures for clarification

Minor: Effect surface, but not effect the using. About process, it did not serious followed but the process is right or no major mistake, not effect the product quality. Critical: Effect the user's safety or propagation problem, blood on product etc. For process, that's a incorrect process and it will effect the executor's safety or health etc. For example, the Chemical Protection etc...

Major NCR: A major NCR are those consider to cause a devation to a specif procedure or SOP that has a potentially negative impact on a product, investigation or an audit. An example is when an inspection is not performed for a specific product which can result in a deviation to the manufacturing procedures or SOP. This action can lead into a malfunctioning product, an incomplete product or a product with other issues that could've been captured in this stage. Minor NCR: A minor NCR are those consider to have a small impact that doesnt necessarily impacts the product or investigation. Basically it is capture during the process of the product and its investigated to find the cause of the NCR. An example can be when an operator has documentation issues regarding overwriting, or when heshe forgets to document the equipment used. Another example is when a NCR investigation is not completed on time

A Major Nonconformity is either:

1.The absence or total breakdown of a system to meet the ISO9000 requirement. 2. A number of minor nonconformities against one requirement can represent a total breakdown of the system and thus be considered a major nonconformity. 3. Any noncompliance that would result in the probable shipment of nonconforming product. 4. A condition that may result in the failure or materially reduce the usability of the products or services for their intended purpose. 5. A noncompliance that judgment and experience indicate is likely either to result in the failure of the quality system or to materially reduce its ability to assure controlled processes or products.

Minor Nonconformity:
1. An ISO9000 nonconformance to that judgement and experience indicate is not likely to result in the failure of the quality system or reduce its ability to assure controlled processes or products. 2. A failure in some part of the supplier's documented quality system relative to ISO9000, or a single observed lapse in following one item of the company's quality system.

The definition of Nonconformity is fairly straight forward, a ccording to the definition in ISO 9000(3.6.2), a nonconformity is a " non-fulfillment of a requirement ". A requirement is a need, expectation, or obligation. It can be stated or implied by an organization, its customers, or other interested parties. Major Nonconformity: The absence or total breakdown of a system. A number of minor nonconformities against one clause can that could lead to a total breakdown of a system. Any noncompliance that would result in the probable shipment of nonconforming product. A condition that may result in the failure or materially reduce the usability of the products or services for their intended purpose . A noncompliance that judgment and experience indicate is likely either to result in the failure of the quality system or to materially reduce its ability to assure controlled processes or products. Minor Nonconformity Failure to meet one requirement of a clause of the standard. A failure in some part of the supplier's documented quality system relative to ISO 9000. A single observed lapse in following one item of a company procedure or quality system.

I am trying to explain with some examples, hopefully these examples will help to understand major & minor NCR. Major NCR: 1)Deviations signed for any product & corrective action loop is open. 2)Doing rework in final product with out having batch code record (in case positive recall is required it would be difficult to trace). 3)An operator is working in pressure die casting machine with out ear plug & helmet) 4)Copies of drawings with preceding revision number is still available on the shop floor with out having obsolete stamp. Minor NCR: 1)On a particular day for an operation patrol inspection done twice against thrice, how ever initial process setting record is available. (check previous records, if it is not happening regularly, then it is a minor ncr) 2)Human error while recording data in the report. 3)Training needs identified for personnel, but compliance is not 100% (it will be considered as minor NCR if compliance is say 80%~90%) 4)"Quality Alert" is displayed inside the office area, instead off shop floor. Thanks.

The difference between major and minor in my point of view is as follows: Major is the absence of the full requirements. As example clause 5.6 in ISO 9001:2008 requirements no management review conducted in the organization" Minor if one clause of the requirements hasnt been fulfilled. As example the review of corrective and preventive actions status during the management review is not being fulfilled.

Large are those concerning the suitability, shape or function of the product. Small differences have no impact on safety, form or function, but could damage the appearance of the product or cause unnecessary work within the process For example, while a small hole on the cloth is hardly reason inspected person to reject it, the same hole on the surface of a new fabric model is sufficient reason to refuse the customer fabric.

OK, I totally get the difference between a major and minor non-conformance but what do most companies do with the type of corrective action that is warranted for each type? you mention about recommendations can be made after correction and verification, but if it is a non-conformance doesn't it still need root cause analysis done to determine the cause of the problem?

A Major NCR is something like not having measurment tools calibrated or not documenting Calibration. during a ISO audit alot of minors from the year before that went uncorrected in to the next years audit could result in to a Major and a result in you not getting ISO re-certified.

Minor NCR is the one that adversely affect the usability of a product, performance of a service, or the integrity of the quality system or affect any product or process output. while Major NCR is the one that could * Seriously affect safety of products, people or property *Rapidly increase product cost *result from failure to implement a corrective action from the previous audit. *Hinder ability to meet the customers requirements. e.g failure to record required data, missing process parameters.

Major nonconformity happens due to break down of QMS,standard of quality does not meet the fully requirements of customer satisfaction.Minor nonconformity happens due to individual or single process of system failure to meet one requirement of standard clause. But total QMS could be break down because of number of minor nonconformity against individual system clause. So it is considered as major nonconformity.

major: can result in system failure; the presence of several non conformity or one nonconformity which results in the specific requirement failing to meet standards. e.g absence of work instructions minor: these are more of errors that 'skip' our minds but do not have major effects on our system. e.g one unserviced fire extinguisher

Minor NCR are small ommitions in the organization procedures which can be rectified within a short time, such as the filing system that is not well labelled for quick identification, whereas the major NCR would be when the total filing system needs an overhaul because documents are lying all over or missing and have to be traced and organized in order for one to trace them easily when required.

My understanding is that it is a major NCR when there is a lack of or total failure of a QMS element. It would be a minor NCR if it is a single or minor failure or nonconformance. When there are a number of the same minor NCR occuring, they can add up to

equal a major NCR, as it suggests the failure of the QMS element.

Major nonconformity is the missing of a complete clause form the standards(e.g 5.4.1) which is not excluded from the scope, or missing something which may affect all the standard clauses (e.g no one know anything about the quality, quality policy for the company), or a complete process is not implemented. Minor nonconformity is missing of sub-clause with will not affect the QMS (e.g. 6.2.2-d the evaluation of the action taken for achieve the necessary competence), missing to implement a form for a process without affecting the process control, a not controlled form. Observation is missing to sign a record from certain person in one or more records but if it is missing in all records it will be a minor nonconformity, the content of the records are not good readily identifiable, miss spelling words in the procedures.

Major deviation in the standard process are marked as major NC. Major NC can cause total breakdown of the system. Deviation in system which do not have serious effect on the system can be marked as Minor NC. For example non availibility of Fire extinguisher can be marked as major NC. NC related to control of records which are not affecting the functioning of the system can be marked as Minor NC.

See already much have been told about the basic differences between a major deviation (NC) and a minor deviation (NC). what i wish to say is whether a deviation is a major or minor depends upon the process under operation. I will try to explain it with an example. Minor non-conformances- Are those which do not affect or alter the total quality of the system or the final-end product. If i talk about the pharma industry if any NC's do not alter the stability, quality, quantity or any other final product specifications is a minor deviation. e.g If the requirement to fill a document is with a pencil and inadvertently it got filled with a pen or the attachment of a chromatogram in a different page from where it should be. However it should be noted that repeated minor non-conformance in the same area is counted as a major nonconformance. in fact even a series of minor non-conformance in the same process can also be counted as a major nonconformance as ultimately it will affect the final quality parameters. Major Non-conformances- Are those which do affect or alter the total quality of the system or the final-end product. If i talk about the pharma industry if any NC's do alter the stability, quality, quantity or any other final product specifications is a minor deviation. e.g Printed chromatogram date differs with the documentation date of that particular chromatography. Signature in the chromatogram and that in the logbook of equipment usage inside the process area are of two different employees

Minor NCR in simple terms are the non conformity that are small and when they are noted during audit they can be fixed quickily eg a missing signature on a document and they may not be mentioned in the findings report. Major NCR this ones are major in non conformity that attracts cost may stop the process of production and they need time allocated to be fixed

Minor NCR: Organistaion not doing what they have documented. Have it documenetd but not addressing same. Might not affect a process but if left unattened can. Major NCR: Organisation not addressing clauses in the standard and hence no documnetation of same. This can lead to products being distributed without being verified.

A major non-conformance is the lack of or total breakdown of the system. For example; A critical assembly operation requires measuring and monitoring of specific customer requirements. The requirements are documented in the contract agreement. The assembly operation has not been measured nor monitored and parts have been shipped to the customer for several months of operation. The customer has a defect and issues a complaint requiring data validation and traceability. The supplier is unable to provide any supporting data or traceability making all parts produced suspect. A minor non-conformance is an event where an internal procedure was not followed correctly resulting in an error. The

customer in this case was not impacted because other systems detected the error preventing a defect from occurring.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!! Because during the classification of non-conformity you may have some doubts - to dispel them think about what would be the consequences if the non-conformity has not been corrected, and what is the likelihood of the problem. That is the best way to find out what kind of non-conformity we have to deal with. Below short info about the types of non-conformity:

Minor NCR we can define as little disagreement, witch is also defined as a single case of non-compliance with the requirements. Major NCR is the situation we can said in the case of systematic, deliberate failure to comply with the requirements of the internal quality system.

Minor nonconformance is a small system breakdown that can be fixed fairly quickly. A Major nonconformance is major system breakdown and will require a CAPA.

As my opinion in construction site Major non conformity is improper manangement system and non-fulfilment. Such as safety, lifting plan, project quality plan and inspection test plan. Minor non-conformity is not following the procedure or proper record. Such as product defects, missing inspection record and poor finishing work. Thanks

Minor NCR(minor non conformatoy) does not affect the operations of the systems and fuctional structures of the company perse, but it will slowly affect the functional system of the company at long run if proper control measures are not put in place to correct the anomallies. Major NCR,affect the companies operations right from the word go.In other words it affects the nervous operational systems of the company and if no remedial action is taken then company may collaspse or fail to meet its objectives. They include non conformaty to 1.Safety measures 2.Functional measures 3.Operational measures 4.Technical measures In most cases major NCR affects the company in terms of cost and time while minor NCR impact will lot be felt immediately but we be felt in the long run.
