This year, Media Design School is bringing the amazing Game Summit to Auckland, with leading game artists headlining the three-day event. This is your opportunity to find out those probing gamer questions burning inside your mind, try out new things and get a preview of the awesome stuff to come. This first-class event will give Blizzard and Valve fans unparalleled access to two of the worlds leading game artists Allen Dilling (credits include World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2) and Max Aristov (credits include Wolfenstein, Farcry) respectively. Like an indie bromance waiting to happen, you could put UMOs second album in a room with Tame Impalas Lonerism and theyd undoubtedly end-up Best Friends Forever. Former Mint Chick (a title that seems hard to shake) Ruban Nielson and his Portland-based band explore similar themes on II to Tames outstanding little psychedelic album of 2012. Both sophomore efforts play with a touch more subtlety than their predecessors UMOs self-titled LP and Tame Impalas Innerspeaker. However, each pulls off their introverted pop-psych-rock with an effortless nonchalance thatd seem arrogant in less-talented and endearing bands. Both ditch to a varying degree the more obtuse riffs from their previous releases for an increased focus on melody, using fluid deliveries to explore inner-worlds of isolation, loneliness and general Floyd-esque moments of The Wall-like distance. Where II deviates, its path is in the darker space it explores, at times wandering into jam territories which reflect the rock aesthetic thats likely carved into the front of Rubans brain in iridescent letters. Track for track on II, you get a tidy tour of UMOs mindset at this point in their career. Its a bit grim and over-itall, working grooves with a sing-along quality that contrasts the overall tone coming off the album. Lead single, Swim And Sleep (Like A Shark) is a beauty sounding like a mash-up of The Mint Chicks (in their

quieter moments) and Lawrence Arabia. The guitar here is smooth as satin, playfully teasing the drums, which assume an air of stolid determination that never lets on that theyre interested (but they are). Straight after, you have the gorgeously soulful So Good At Being In Trouble, adding more than a touch of heartbreak to proceedings. This is followed by One At A Time, which picks up the pace, a move furthered by No Need For A Leader, effectively conveying a potent mixture of changing fates and pending doom. This is all great stuff. However, some might focus on the fact that II lacks the pop-snap that made UMOs first album such an engaging listen. But the combination of beautiful guitar-work and slickly morphing genre-exploration makes for a selfsustaining album that reveals more during each play. A grower you might say, although one that is still convincing in quality from the very first listen. It just gets better after that. Further evidence that UMO was always the right move for Nielson.

GENERAL RELEASE
David O Russell knows how to introduce likeably flawed characters, slowly wind them all up and simultaneously let them go at the right moments. Perhaps this talent stems from keeping a strong grip on his casts (George Clooney and Lily Tomlin can vouch for that), but its a skill he refines with each movie. Silver Linings Playbook is his current apex. As with The Fighter, every bit of acting juice is squeezed out of the Oscarloaded ensemble: Bradley Cooper delivers a career best as the bipolar Pat, Jennifer Lawrence parallels her Winters Bone performance as widowed Tiffany, Robert De Niro jump-starts his reputation as Pats OCD football-bookie father and the fantastic Jacki Weaver continues being so as Pats mother (I wish she had more screen time). The quality extends to the smaller roles, from Julia Stiles A-grade bitchiness to Chris Tuckers piston-powered mouth.

Stan Walker stars in his first feature film alongside Temuera Morrison. Set amongst a Maori family in Pukekohe, Mt Zion is a family- oriented story in which Turei (Walker) has a dream for his band to be the support act for Bob Marleys 1979 concert in Auckland.

Through Pat and Tiffanys mutual desire to escape the depressive glut of their collapsed marriages, we watch these two jagged souls grind each others gears while clicking uniquely in place. Its a relationshipbalancing act that weighs dialogueheavy laughs against heart-aching conflict, resulting in a rom-com with a centre of gravity that will draw in nearly anyone. By the end, you cannot bear the thought of these characters not finding their slice of happiness a rousing testament to Matthew Quicks material and O Russells care of it. Silver Linings has signature wit, top-tier performances and a peculiar charm, but the films ultimate achievement is how it explores its mentally-broken characters to the point of making them so universally relatable a reminder that sanity doesnt make your flaws any more orderly.

Whats a University without a first class caf/bar on site? BEING ABLE TO TELL THE GRANDKIDS YOU SAW THE BEATLES LIVE (OKAY MAYBE, JUST ONE OF THEM) ISN T THE ONLY GOOD REASON TO HEAD TO HEAD OUT TO SEE RINGO STARR AND HIS ALL STAR BAND THIS WEEK... When I thInk of Ringo Starrs post-Beatle career Thomas the Tank Engine always pops up, but really his career is a much deeper, wider valley than those years in childrens television. he is, after all, the most documented and critically acclaimed actor among the fab four, playing central roles not only in their own cinema delights but as numerous other celluloid efforts as well. After the break-up in 1970, Starr achieved some solo musical success with several singles and albums, and recorded with each of his fellow ex-Beatles as they too developed their own post-Beatle careers. And of late, hes been touring Ringo Starr & his All-Starr Band, collaboration now into its 12th incarnation. Starrs first solo was an effort with Maurice Gibb, Paul McCartney, George Martin and Quincy Jones, returning to his swing jazz days before the mop tops. Sentimental Journey covered all the standards and was a surprise to fans. he held fast, returning with Beaucoups of Blues that produced the worldwide hit It Dont Come easy, charting at no.4 in the US. the album also spawned Photograph (penned with George harrison). Released by Starr as a single on 5 October 1973 is made no.8 in the Uk and no.1 in the USA - all at a time when charting meant everything, especially after the comedown of the Beatles break up. A further number a cover of the Sherman Brothers Youre Sixteen almost threatened full dominance and was possibly Starrss best run in the public attention span. through the 70s and 80s he was eternally busy making music with former Beatles and contemporaries but whilst Bowie and his peers were innovating, Starr was renovating. he was constantly reinventing himself as an actor, doing the aforementioned Thomas, which started in 1984 and the character of Mr. Conductor in PBS 89 kids show Shining Tim Station. In 1980, harrison wrote All those Years Ago as a contribution to Starrs Cant Fight Lightning (later released as Stop and Smell the Roses), which he included on his own 1981 cut Somewhere in England, which followed John Lennons murder. Lennon offered Starr a pair of songs to use on Roses: nobody told Me and Life Begins at 40. After the murder, Starr didnt feel comfortable recording them. Ironically Life finally emerged on posthumous Lennon compilations defying reality, it would seem. Starr often uses it in his repertoire for Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band - a concept created by producer David Fishof. Fishof created the Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp, an interactive musical event that takes place in various cities throughout the United States. Starrs band has consistently toured for over twenty years, in similar fashion to Bill Wymans Rhythm kings, rotating its line-up. Songs include work from individual band members as well as Beatles numbers and some of Starrs own stuff too. With only two Beatles remaining this is a pretty rare chance to see a legacy in action. Clichs it may be but the man behind Octopus Garden and With a little help from My friends is still steaming. Dont miss out. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

Never heard of BioShock Infinite? A quick recap: the true sequel to 2007s BioShock, and built by the same developer as that first game, this new first person shooter is set aboard a giant, floating city. The year is 1912 and the world is, politically, a mess. This floating city - called Columbia - is no different; a microcosm of political schisms all its own seem to threaten its very existence. Into that milieu our hero (one Booker DeWitt) must stride, in order to rescue (or is that kidnap?) Elizabeth - a girl with extraordinary powers. Unlike BioShocks post-apocalypse Rapture, Infinites Columbia is alive and full of character. NPCs populate most areas, generally milling about and participating in all manner of carefree activity. Children frolic in the park, for example, chasing invisible insects or otherwise generally behaving in the way a child might have, before the invention of the Nintendo. This world of floating buildings can be navigated by a means just as extraordinary; the skyhook. By using this simple device, which is strapped to your arm, you can ride the rollercoaster-like tracks that permeate the impossibly spectacular environment. Elizabeth, too, is far more than she first appears. No naive bystander, she has amazing powers that let her tear holes in the very fabric of space and time, making things appear (or disappear) at will. Shes not stupid, either, and will actively engage with the world in a super-realistic manner, talking to you and pointing out all sorts of wondrous things as you explore. The violence, when it occurs, is incredible in its intensity. After receiving the skyhook, for example, the first thing you do with it is thrust it into someones chest and use it to start ripping out bits of gore they had concealed in there. Blood flies with gay abandon; steamers of the stuff, bright red, splatters your screen, obscuring your view as your target writhes in pain. Heads are ripped straight off, necks slowly broken as you stare into your enemys knowingly doomed expression. Theyre going to get letters. Every moment of the game is as spectacular, it seems. Whether exploring, shooting, or tearing down the skyline with nought but clouds beneath you, excitement permeates every second of the experience. March 26th, the games release date, cant come soon enough.

whats the ethos of your store/clothing line? Its a celebration of the people who have pushed the boundaries of society; I think of them like the Cowboys of society - hence the super clever name Cowboy Civilians. I look to these people for inspiration, living and the dead, to push myself to keep creating. If we didnt have the Cowboy Civilians like Clint Eastwood, Einstein, Hunter S. Thompson & Beethoven, to name a few, we would not have had those roads created and boundaries recreated. which historical figure had some wicked style? The Marlboro Man He was the pinup boy of manliness and basic style. Then there is Al Capone who dressed to compliment his big personality with tailored suits, hats and big chomp cigars. societys biggest fashion faux-pas? Pretty much anything you are told to wear by an advertising agency go on, think for yourself! whats the must-have look this season? I love understated clothing worn well, for me thats a scoop neck Tee with a subtle statement. Also, I believe the kiwi legend of short stubbies is coming back. Cowboy Civilians will be bringing these in for the 2014 season. Colours/patterns big this season? Bright obnoxious colours that take confidence and a little craziness to pull off. what are the essentials for a mans wardrobe? Great shoes are where it all starts and then work your way up. Mix vintage or worn looking Tees/jeans with classic and new, tailored vests and jackets to create a relaxed but effortlessly styled look. what are the essentials for a ladys wardrobe? Feminine materials and colours, Im a fan of Alannah Hill which has a feel of girly French about it. Load that wardrobe up with versatile accessories, shoes and dont forget a beautiful fragrance. everyone should own at least one good A piece of conversation art that enhances their living space. Cowboy Civilians created the resin skulls in bright pop colours for this purpose. hyphenate three words to describe your style: Effortlessly fucking cool.

IT IS IRONIC THAT A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, ONE OF THE MOST ACTION-PACKED AND MACHO FILMS TO BE RELEASED THIS YEAR WILL HIT NZ CINEMAS ON A DAY USUALLY SET ASIDE FOR FLOWERS AND TEDDY BEARS. COULD THIS VALENTINES DAY BE ONE FOR THE BOYS? 25 YeARS hAve passed since the world first became acquainted with John McClane and Die Hard. Although the saga was born in the 80s, its next two installments came in the following decade, quickly establishing the Die Hard franchise as quintessential 90s action films, arguably defining the genre itself. huge gaps between the films has allowed for a multi-generational audience and helped to avoid the inevitable cheesiness and tack that comes with rushing into sequels (although a fair amount of cheese has still managed to sneak in there!). Bruce Willis is back and doing what he does best: high impact action scenes with logic defying stunts and amusing one-liners. this is his fifth time playing John McClane and the character has grown with him. Director John Moore has adapted the role to fit with the characters age, commenting hes in his early fifties in the movies, and his joints ache a little bit more every time he jumps off a building. the maturing of McClane also means there wont be any treats for the ladies this time round; Moore has confirmed that Willis will be keeping his shirt on! Moore, while being new to the Die Hard crew, is no newcomer to the action genre. Best known for Behind Enemy Lines and the less successful Max Payne, A Good Day To Die Hard will be his 5th feature film and most high profile picture to date. Moore has teamed up with producer Alex Young (X-Men, Unstoppable, The A-Team) and their combined repertoire more than suggests there will be an enjoyable combination of action, humour and excitement. the previous instalment, Live Free or Die Hard, saw the plot turn away from the typical blow-everything-up terrorist bad guys that were popular in the 90s. John McClane is faced with the threat of cyber-terrorism. Perhaps this was due to the political correctness that surrounded hollywood after 9/11, or maybe it was just in an attempt to keep up with modern trends. While this was all very cool and contemporary, it was a bit of a let down. the bad guys werent nearly as intimidating and it wasnt quite as much fun watching Willis bring them down. Luckily it looks like Die hard will return to its roots this year as John McClane is back to taking down traditional-type terrorists, this time in an underworld nuclear weapons heist. there are many firsts this time around. John McClane will leave USA soil and will stand off against classic American cinema baddies, the Russians. the other big first is that Willis will share the spotlight with the fairly unknown Jai Courtney. Instead of cantering the plot on rescuing a family member, John McClane will work alongside his son, Jack, to bring down a Russian terrorist crime ring. It is a pretty big deal to have such a prominent secondary character when in the past Willis has starred alone. It opens up the question of whether this is a gateway for him to step down from the Die Hard saga and allow another to continue the legacy. Despite these changes, we can be fairly sure that Die Hard will not let us down in a few areas. there will be car chases. there will be explosions. And there will be helicopters doing things beyond the normal capabilities of a helicopter. this is all we need. WRITTEN BY ZOE FITZPATRICK
