3. Title: Evidence­Based Medicine: What is it, do I need it and how do I do it?

4. Short Description: Much debate exists about what constitutes evidence and why we need 
evidence to be good practitioners.  The fact remains that medicine is not static—new knowledge is 
gained, paradigm shifts occur, and unfamiliar cases present to us.  How can we sift through the 
information to better inform our practice?

5. Learning Objectives: At the end of the session attendees will:
a. Understand the definition of Evidence­Based Medicine (EBM)
b. Be conversant with the hierarchy of evidence
c. Have a basic understanding of how to conduct the 4 steps of EBM
d. Feel energized to apply EBM to their own practice

Presentation Outline:
Are double­blind randomized placebo­controlled studies the only acceptable evidence? 
Absolutely not!  Is word of mouth considered evidence?  Absolutely! But how much weight do we 
give to each type of evidence, how do we critically evaluate it, and how do we apply it to our own 
clinical practice?

Attendees will discover the true meaning of Evidence­Based Medicine (EBM), and learn how 
these principles can be applied to better inform any type of clinical practice.  EBM does not 
replace clinical skills or experience, but is a valuable and necessary tool for improved patient care.

6.  Biographical Sketch: Dr. Jami Kupperman graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic 
Medicine in 2003, and completed a 1­year fellowship with Southwest College Research Institute 
in 2005.  She practices medicine in Arizona, where she works both in private practice and in a 
variety of community medicine settings.  She is an attending physician at Mission of Mercy, 
providing no­cost care to the uninsured and underinsured, at Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS, 
bringing naturopathic medicine to those living with HIV, and at Southwest Naturopathic Medical 
Center, where she focuses on her true passion, Adolescent Medicine.
