4) Description: Each passing year, a variety of stressors take a toll on cellular health. Nutritional
deficiencies, oxidative damage, and decreased production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), lead to a
decline in metabolism as well as overall health. By supporting cellular energy production, health can
be restored and vitality can be achieved.
5) Abstract: It is well established that metabolism changes over time. After reaching middle-age, many
patients tend to slowly gain weight year after year – oftentimes without changing their diet or exercise
regimen. Often accompanying this weight gain is a gradual decline in overall health. At the cellular
level, this weight increase and health decline can, in part, be attributed to the metabolic compromise
that occurs “naturally” with the wear and tear of life. Understanding the biochemical pathways
involved in energy production is critical to resolving health issues. Healing the aging metabolism
involves not only enhancing the efficiency of energy production by improving the health of existing
mitochondria (energy-producing organelles), but also expanding the energy potential by providing
building blocks for energy generation. By utilizing effective nutritional therapies, metabolism can be
enhanced and patient vitality restored.
a) Learning objectives
• Review the biochemical pathways that drive cellular energy (ATP) production in the body
• Understand the factors which decrease energy metabolism over time
• Discuss the health implications of improper or inefficient metabolic function
• Assess relevant research and effective nutritional therapies for restoring mitochondrial
function and energy production
• Review case studies exemplifying the benefits for weight loss and other health parameters
