Abstract for Oral Presentation, prefer 90 minutes to properly cover topic

Title: Nutritional Care of the Bariatric Surgery Patient

Short Description: Morbid Obesity is increasingly being treated with surgery. There are over 200,000
bariatric procedures being performed annually in the United States, and these numbers will continue to
grow. This presentation will cover the primary procedures for weight loss, nutritional deficiencies created
by each procedure and their medical management by NDs.

Abstract: Bariatric Surgery is a term that refers to a group of procedures used for the treatment of morbid
obesity. These procedures are increasingly being used in the treatment of obesity thanks both to greater
reimbursement and lack of other viable options for individuals with greater than 100 pounds of excess
body weight. While there are many short-term complications that can arise form surgery for obesity,
many of the long-term complications relate to nutritional deficiencies caused by decreased nutritional
intake, malabsorption, dietary modification, or combinations of the above.

Most often, nutritional aftercare of bariatric surgery patients falls to Registered Dietitians (RDs). While
well equipped to manage many of the eating challenges, RDs are not trained in medical nutrition,
diagnosis and treatment. Many patients eventually fall back into treatment with their primary care doctor,
most of who are also ill prepared to manages these cases.

Because of their training, Naturopathic Doctors are uniquely poised to help with the long-term care of
bariatric surgery patients. The primary goal of this presentation is to provide NDs, ND students, and other
primary care practitioners with the basic knowledge needed to assess and manage bariatric surgery
patients in their clinical practice.

This presentation will cover the following:

1. An overview of the criteria for surgery, when and how to refer.
2. An overview of the four primary weight loss surgery procedures, with focus on how they alter the
digestion and absorption of nutrients
3. A review of research on nutritional deficiency in morbid obesity
4. A review of the research on nutritional deficiency after bariatric surgery, by nutrient and by
procedure
5. A very brief discussion of pre-operative nutritional care
6. An overview of food introduction and guidelines after bariatric surgery
7. A discussion of nutritional prevention after bariatric surgery
8. Laboratory evaluation of the bariatric surgery patient
9. Clinical protocols for the common deficiencies

The objectives of this presentation are as follows:

1. Familiarize participants with the bariatric surgery procedures
2. Provide a working knowledge of the specific nutritional issues associated with each procedure
3. Teach participants the basics of pre-operative nutritional issues and care
4. Teach participants how to evaluate and care for post-operative patients
5. Provide a good knowledge of primary strategy for prevention of nutritional deficiency after
surgery
6. Provide an introduction to the diagnosis and management of nutritional deficiency after surgery
7. Familiarize participants with protocols for both intervention and treatment of bariatric surgery
patients

While the basic intent of this lecture is not to provide pharmacy training, the discussion of how digestion
and absorption is altered with bariatric surgery has much relevance to pharmacy (including natural
pharmacy).
