Personal Statement:

Ever since I can remember, I have grown up with an ambition to become an Engineer and over the last few years, it has crystallized into an interest in the field of Electrical Engineering. Even though I had an option of choosing from various streams of engineering, such as IT and Instrumentation and Control, I chose to do my undergraduate study in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University, which has built for itself a reputation of stimulating academic environment and boasts of an enviable panel of professors. During my undergraduate years I tried to make full use of the opportunities offered to me, which, apart from various academic courses, included seminars, projects and technical presentations. I have completed a number of projects as a part of the curriculum, learnt various softwares pertaining to this branch, which included MATLAB, PSPICE, XILINX etc. and to develop further expertise in the subject, I participated in a number of workshops pertaining to Robotics and Programmable Logic Controllers. This included a summer internship at Robosapiens, India, which helped me understand the very basics of Electronics, Robotics and Embedded Systems. In the four years of my undergraduate study, I have developed a special interest in certain major areas of my Branch, which include Power Systems, Generation Transmission and Distribution, Embedded Systems, Control Systems and Energy Management. Also to gain hands on experience of the subjects, I completed various mini-projects and seminars. These seminars gave me a platform to interact with intellectuals and eminent persons of my field who not only provided me with a valuable insight into the technical progress made by the electrical and electronics industry but also motivated me to pursue a career in electrical engineering. This, coupled with my thirst for knowledge and desire to remain associated with my field, has motivated me to opt for Masters in the field of Electrical Engineering. As a part of my major project I completed a four-month long internship, starting from January 2012 to May 2012, at Sona Koyo Steering Systems Limited, a company manufacturing power steering. As a part of this project I made a basic model of a Digital IC tester, which contained a low power microcontroller, used to detect faulty ICs. This exposure to the industry was an enriching experience as it strengthened my technical prowess, my research aptitude, and gave me a hand on experience on a variety of softwares and latest technologies. Along with gaining the knowledge of the basic subjects of the curriculum, I underwent training for a period of one month at the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, a premier industry in world-scenario. My interest in courses like Power System Analysis, Generation Transmission and Distribution, Energy Management and Linier Control Systems led to an industrial training in Electrical Systems in the Rolling Stock and in Installations in Stations and Tunnelsin June 2010. This exposure to the latest equipments used and the methods of operation adopted was thoroughly enriching experience as I could visualize my concepts better and develop a finer understanding in my areas of interest like Control Systems and Power Systems. After completing various internships and seminars in my fields of interest and this kind of exposure, I decided to pursue my higher studies in Electrical Engineering. I stay in a joint family where growth of an individual in a holistic sense was inculcated from the beginning. Starting from my school days, I was always eager to be part of a team. Being elected as the ViceCaptain was my first step towards this growth. This involvement with community issues continued in my undergraduate years where I was actively involved in various clubs and organizations, both technical and nontechnical, organizing various events and participating in many. A volunteerism, which has helped me in my growth as an individual, is my association with DISHA, a social service wing of a club in which various students collaborated in their free time to lend their services to various less privileged schools and orphanages to teach and spend time with the less-fortunate children. The time spent with these children was one of my most rewarding and enriching experiences. Infact, I admit that my relatively low GPA of 5.27 in the 3rd Semester was primarily due to my full-scale involvement in these extra curricular activities. However I subsequently learnt to balance my various interests with my academic pursuits and improved my grades.

Power and Energy Engineering is the key for success for any country as it deals with limited and diminishing energy resources and aims for its optimal and sustainable utilization. Sustainable Energy is the biggest challenge of the industry today. Newer technologies will help in overcoming constraints of fiscal, resource and environmental nature and will help in improving life by making energy production and transmission more efficient, cheap and accessible. This will be the backbone of industrial and human development of the country. I wish to work in this sector to fulfill my ambition of making a difference to human life in making it better. The Polytechnic Institute of New York University is rated, by both peers and experts, as one of the best in Electrical Engineering. The faculty has distinguished researches to its credit and also has strong links with local and global industries to make learning more relevant. I am aware that hard work and perseverance is necessary for this course. I am confident that my aptitude and interest will see me through the challenges in pursuit of my ambition. I eagerly look forward to a positive response from your side and wish to assume that my commitment to the course would not be found wanting.
