Charles S. Modlin, Jr., M.D., MBA

Being an active father who is involved in the lives of my four children has been the most rewarding and enriching experience of my lifetime. I cant imagine having missed out on the wonderful moments we have shared since they were born. As a kidney transplant surgeon and urologist, I derive a great deal of satisfaction in helping save and improve the lives of my patients; however, the satisfactions of being a father are second to none. My strong fatherhood skills are a direct result of my father taking an active role in my life. He was always there for me, helping guide me, cheering me on and believing in me. But just as important, he was always a strong force to correct and redirect me when needed. My father instilled within me an appreciation that whatever successes I might have are not simply due to my own efforts and accomplishments, but also because of the blessings of God as well as the many generations before me whose sacrifices have provided me with opportunities to get an education to become a physician. My father taught me it is my responsibility to use my medical education to give back to the communityand this is why I started the Cleveland Clinic Minority Mens Health Center to help improve the health status of minority and underserved men so that they too will be able to live healthier lives to spend with their children. Fathers Do Matter. I only hope that I will be able to instill the same values in my children that I learned from my father so that my children are in turn inclined to work to improve the lives of the community and world in which they live. The Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative is proud to provide funding for the Rising Above Program. The Rising Above Program works with non-custodial fathers to help them become economically empowered and self-sufficient. The program targets non-custodial fathers living in Cuyahoga County, who are unemployed or underemployed. Rising Above provides a four-week series of workshops with a nationally recognized curriculum in Workforce and Personal Development. The program also offers Financial Literacy Education, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and individual case management via one-to-one consultation/ advocacy along with a 24-hour hotline. Following completion of the workshop series, the program provides employment placement and retention services. Rising Above coordinates its resources with a host of business, county, community based, faith based and social service agencies to provide employment and other support services. For more information on this program, please contact Maurice Stevens at (216) 881-5866.
Upcoming Community Event. The 11th Annual Minority Mens Health Fair will be held on Thursday, April 25th from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Glickman Tower at the Cleveland Clinic. More than 1,300 men attended the 2012 Minority Men's Health Fair held on April 26, 2012. Hosted by the Minority Men's Health Center, attendees will receive free health screenings and educational information provided by various Cleveland Clinic departments and other outside organizations. The free health screenings will include: Prostate Cancer, Kidney Function, Colon Cancer, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Bone Densitometry , Cholesterol, Sickle Cell, Glaucoma Skin Cancer, Oral Cancer, HIV, Sleep Apnea and Peripheral Artery Disease. The Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative is proud to help promote the event along with the Cleveland Clinic as we were one of the original sponsors of this health fair in its infancy stages and we are happy to see that it has grown into a major critical community event. The Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative is working with Starting Point on their Men in Early Childhood Committee. The purpose of the committee is to get men more actively involved in the early childhood field including; developing ideas for improving the facilities and programs to reach and teach young boys more effectively, increase the number of men participating in ongoing programs at the centers and encouraging and assisting more men to work in the early child care field at all levels. The committee meets monthly at Starting Point and is always interested in new ideas and members. For more information on this committee, please call Constance Walker at 216-575-0061.
