On August 13, 2011,I listened to Phi alumnae speak about how much their Alpha Sigma Tau experience during the Preference recruitment event. I remember sitting there thinking how special it must be to join an organization not for four years, but for life. I envisioned myself years from now, standing in front of a group of potential members speaking about how much this organization had provided for me in my life. This past June while attending the Alpha Sigma Tau National Convention, I was in awe of the amount of alumnae who were still involved with this sorority. I thought about our creed and realized that when we say I believe in the values of friendship and fidelity to purpose, we are promising to always keep AST close to our hearts. We are stating that we will keep these sisters who are more than friends a part of our lives. As Collegiate-Alumnae Liaison, one of my main goals is to involve our fantASTic alumnae with our chapter more. Rachel Bourgeois ,Phi Chapter Alumna, and I had the idea of creating a monthly newsletter. I hope this will be a tool for us to stay connected. Have a happy Mardi Gras! Noel Netzhammer

A Letter from the President

I would first like to take this wonderful opportunity to introduce myself to you. I was initiated into the chapter in Spring 2011 and since that time have held the positions of Membership Development, Social Committee, Vice-President, and currently President of the amazing Phi Chapter. I have the pleasure of working with nine great sisters on the executive committee( eight of which are brand new to executive board). Over the Christmas break we had a very productive Officer Transitioning Retreat put on by your very own Esther Barrios and our other great Chapter Advisors! Since then the E-board planned on a chapter workshop AST 101 the first week of school and we had our first business meeting of the semester. Both events went wonderfully! Our chapter has a refreshed positive attitude about meetings, sisterhoods, events, planning for the upcoming semester and much much more! On behalf of the collegiate chapter, I would like to extend an invitation to each and every one of our Alumnae to attend any of our business meetings throughout the semester (Mondays at 6:15pm Fayard Room 227), any fundraisers, philanthropy projects, intramural games, or sisterhood events that we may be hosting throughout the semester. Noel will keep you all updated! We are so grateful to have such a supportive and loving Alumnae Chapter here at Southeastern and we are so very excited to see what amazing things we can do together as two strong chapters! Taus Help Toys for Tots

Over the Christmas break, on December 14th and 15th, our chapter was asked to help out at the Greater Mandeville Toy Giveaway, Toys for Tots. I agreed to volunteer but I had no idea what to expect, having never done it before. I arrived at the Mandeville Lions Club and asked what we would be doing. The workers explained we would be helping the children pick out their Christmas presents. It was beyond rewarding to help these children pick out a couple gifts for Christmas. There were families coming from all different kinds of situations who came to the event. Every child's face lit up when they picked out their perfect toy. I am so glad that I got to share this experience with my Alpha Sigma Tau sisters . This event definitely opened all of our eyes to the true meaning of Christmas. It was a great feeling to know we could do our share to contribute to the progress of mankind. Emma Bunnell

Putting the FUN in FUNdraising

Active Self-Reliant Trustworthy
Its time to kick our fundraising into high gear! This spring, we are implementing our newest fundraising endeavor- a bean bag toss in the union. The theme is Tossing for AST. Everyone in the chapter is excited about building up this fresh and unique idea into a well-rounding activity benefitting our chapter. Along with the bean bag toss, we will also have a booth set up at Rock n Roar! In the fall we will be planning to have our biggest fundraiser yet! If anyone would like to participate or contribute your ideas to the fundraising of the Phi chapter, your help is always welcomed and appreciated. We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions! Please contact me at Mikelyn.ringe@selu.edu or 225-301-1808 with any questions! Mikelyn Ringe

New Member Class Campout

On January 25th, my Fall 2012 new member class had our retreat. During this time, we bonded by ditching our cell phones for the night! We had a camp out at Kelsea LoCiceros ranch. We all worked together to set up our tents. We made a bonfire! We roasted hot dogs and smores! During our retreat we played games to get to know each other on a more personal level. After a day of fun, we sang campfire songs and danced around the bonfire until we were all ready to hit the hay! Overall, the retreat was a memorable night! It was definitely an amazing experience!
