With the debate surrounding gun control heating up and President Obama calling for action on a national level, Humboldt County Sheri Mike Downey stands with more than 256 Sheri s and 6 State Sheri s Associations saying No to federal gun control, voicing concerns over what they believe is an e ort to infringe upon the Second Amendment. Quoted in the Times Standard, Downey said, For me its a constitutional issue, adding that he feels strongly about standing up for the Constitution, whether it's the Second Amendment or any other constitutional issue. ...We're concerned about the possible intrusion by the federal government. According to the report, Downey is joined by Mendocino County Sheri Thomas Allman, Del Norte County Sheri Dean Wilson and Siskiyou County Sheri Jon Lopey. What does it all mean for Humboldt County? Its an unusual situation to be sure, and a hot topic. Join us for lunch, February 21st, as Mike talks about the 2nd amendment and the e ect of current pending legislation being promoted by President Obama, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and others. Mikes been with the Humboldt County Sheri s O ce for 27 years, and hes seen it all - worked on patrol, drug enforcement, Search & Rescue, as a Shelter Cove Resident Deputy, Sergeant/Commander in charge of the Southern Humboldt area, Lieutenant of the Northern Division, and Commander of the patrol operations at the Main Station. In May of 2006, he was promoted to Undersheri . Hes been involved in many aspects of disaster response as both a responder and as part of incident command. Hes a graduate of POST Command College and his thesis dealt with urban area refugees and their potential impact on rural law enforcement if they are forced to leave their homes due to terrorist attack, natural disaster or pandemic. On top of that, hes served as past Chairman of the Humboldt County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Chair of the Humboldt County Drug Task Force, President of the Law Enforcement Chiefs Association of Humboldt County, member of the California State Sheri s Association and serves on various committees on the county level. He resides in Fortuna with his wife of 32 years and they have six children and eight grandchildren.

Presidents Message
Pursuit
For the last few years, urged on by a friend, I have chosen a word to by my theme for the year. Two years ago, the word was adventure. I had recently declared my candidacy for District 1 Supervisor and was on an adventure discovering new worlds and new people. Last year, the word was venture. Venture is slightly di erent in that when venturing out, one puts oneself in a position of winning or losing and can include nancial bene t or loss. It was all quite an experience, about which I have no regrets. When one thing doesnt come to fruition, another does; thus, I write to you as President of Humboldt Republican Women, Federated. What a compliment and a gift! Thank you. My word for this year is pursuit. Its a word and a concept that I hope you will embrace with me as we move forward this year to make a positive imprint in our community and in politics in the year ahead. We have various arenas where we can pursue these e orts. In conversation with your Board members, we discussed the need to clean up the Republican voter rolls. Over the years, voters have moved or have died and their names have not been removed. We need to support the Central Committee in this endeavor so we do not spend money endeavoring to inform those who no longer reside in the county. Additionally, in an e ort to gain a new presence in community a airs, we need to put our heads together to sponsor fundraisers where the funds raised will be donated to organizations that support those ideals which we espouse. Needless to say, publicity for all we do is paramount. Any takers? More than one would be wonderful, since none of us likes working in a vacuum. At the California Federation of Republican Women Presidents Conference I attended in January, there were issues addressed in which we also have a stake. For one, voter fraud issues, and for another, gun control. Election integrity is certainly an issue we can embrace. Currently there is nothing stopping anyone from voting, and voting by mail is a source of fraud and mistakes in the misapplication of the law. We need to be proponents of accuracy in the voter registration law as, out of 24,000,000 votes, one out of eight are invalid, according to Assemblywoman Catharine Baker. California voter registration law hasnt been updated in more years than anyone can remember. Thirty-two states have enacted legislation for voter I.D. laws. California needs to step up to the plate. As CFRW moves forward on this, I will let you know. Many hands make light work. Thats also the working philosophy of HRWF! As I mentioned in my previous paragraph, gun control is a paramount issue for us. It is, therefore, with great pleasure I announce that our speaker for February is Sheri Mike Downey, who will speak with us on this issue. Our Second Amendment is being assaulted and we need to stay informed with the straight facts. Please help me welcome this honorable servant of the people on February 17th, and let us continue to pursue truth, service, and unity in all we do. Warmest regards,

Headlines: Second Amendment Rights Learning from History

Daily Caller: During the National Ri e Associations meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and the White House gun violence task force, the vice president said the Obama administration does not have the time to fully enforce existing gun laws. Jim Baker, the NRA representative present at the meeting, recalled the vice presidents words during an interview with The Daily Caller: And to your point, Mr. Baker, regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply dont have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form, that checks a wrong box, that answers a question inaccurately.

The total number of defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control - 56 million!
Turkey, in 1911, established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. The Soviet Union, in 1929, established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated. China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated. Uganda established gun control in 1970. NBC Connecticut: Newtown Calls for Armed School O cers - The Newtown Board of Education wants more armed police o cers in the town's four elementary schools after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. ...Parents said security means more than a police presence. After what happened in our community, I just think we should go over and above and provide a shining example for the rest of the world and protect our kids, said resident Donna Lorenz.

If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Australia banned private ownership of guns in 1996; people were forced to give up their weapons; 650,000 guns were then destroyed. They were not only assault weapons and military-type weapons, but .22 ri es and shotguns. The e ort cost the Australian government $500,000. And what has been the result? According to a recent report from a January 10, 2013, Patriotaction.net video, there has been a huge rise in crime: Armed robberies are up 69%; assaults with guns up 28%; gun murders up 19%; home invasions up 21%. Police are fewer in numbers; their morale has never been lower. The Australian warning to Americans, Dont think it cant happen to you. We dont have a chance in hell of getting our rights back! In Britain, after a series of restricting gun laws over the years, in 1997, private ownership of guns was banned similar to Australia. Legal gun ownership has been reduced almost to the vanishing point, while even most convicted felons in Britain are not put behind bars. The crime rate, including the rate of crimes committed with guns, is far higher in Britain now than it was back in the days when there were few restrictions on Britons buying rearms. In 1954, there were only a dozen armed robberies in London but, by the 1990s after decades of ever tightening gun ownership restrictions there were more than a hundred times as many armed robberies.

including people who are determined to push gun control laws, either in ignorance of the facts, or de ance of the facts. Thomas Sowell, The Guardian, December 18, 2012.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely a ect only the law-abiding citizens not the criminals. With guns, we are 'citizens.' Without them, we are 'subjects.' During WWII, the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED! The Example of Switzerland: Hitler and his German troops invaded every surrounding nation of Germany except Switzerland, because they knew by law - every Swiss household has a gun. The Swiss government not only issues every household a ri e, but they train the adults in the family how to use the ri e. The Swiss have the lowest gun-related crime rate of any civilized country in the world.

Guns are not the problem, people are the problem,

Second Amendment Assault in California

Last September, Governor Brown signed hundreds of bills into law. Under the sheer enormity of this volume of legislation, our rights as free, self-determining people continue to erode. Make no mistake, progressive Democrats controlling the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of government now have the 2/3rds majority to pass anything, including the ban of our second amendment rights. There is hope. All across the U.S., county sheri s are standing up for the Constitution they took an oath to uphold. As our top elected o cial, a constitutional sheri may be our only hope to stop this infringement on our second amendment. 219 sheri s have declared to preserve our right to bear arms. Join me in thanking Sheri Downey for this proactive stand! The following bills were signed or vetoed last September. Notice the votes. Our representatives DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE SECOND AMENDMENT! Senator Noreen Evans voted yes on every single gun control bill. Assemblyman Hu man, who is now our Congressman, voted no only once, SB 1221, using dogs to hunt bears. Assemblyman Chesbro voted no only twice, on SB 1221 and AB 1527. S.B. #1221 HUNTING ALERT PASSED 9-26-12 Introduced by Senator Lieu, Law prohibits the use of hounds in the hunting pursuit of bears and bobcats. A.B. #1527 Open Carry Ban (of unloaded long guns) PASSED 9-29-12 Introduced by Assemblyman Portantino & Ammiano, expands last years ban on open carrying of an unloaded handgun to also include unloaded ri es and shotguns. S.B. #249 GUN RIGHTS ALERT DIED IN COMMITTEE Introduced by Senators Yee & Steinberg, Law bans assault weapons as de ned by detachable magazines. Existing law de nes a rearm as an assault weapon, in part, based upon whether it has a detachable magazine. This bill would de ne detachable magazine for this purpose to mean any ammunition feeding device that can be removed from the rearm without disassembly of the rearm action.

DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.
Please learn from history! As one leaves the museum at the Dachau, Germanys rst Concentration Camp, one sees a sign reminding us how important it is to learn from history. It was there that an estimated 200,000 people were imprisoned; one third were Jews, the rest were political prisoners, including many Christian priests and pastors as well - anyone who would dare to stand up against Hitlers regime and had no way of protecting themselves. About 33,000 had been killed. On April 29, 1945, Dachau was surrendered to American troops. The troops found 30 railroad cars lled with dead bodies, in various stages of decomposition. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/dachau22.html www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org The sign reads, Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. S.B. #1366 Lost and Stolen Reporting of Firearms VETOED Introduced by Senator DeSaulnier, requires every person to report the theft or loss of a rearm within 48 hours. A.B. #2460 Ban of Law Enforcement Transfer of Firearms VETOED Introduced by Assemblyman Dickinson, would ban law enforcement o cers from transferring handguns that are not on Californias approved roster to anyone but law enforcement o cers. Currently, state law allows for the transfer of rearms that are not on the approved "roster" to be transferred to law-abiding civilians passing a criminal background check. A.B. #2333 Liability for Negligent Storage of BB Devices VETOED Introduced by Assemblyman Solorio, would expand Californias negligent storage law. If a minor possesses a BB device that is visible from your own private property, you and your child would be in violation.
