Apresentao
A Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuria (Embrapa) vinculada ao Ministrio da Agricultura, Pecuria e Abastecimento foi criada em 26 de abril de 1973 com objetivo de dotar o Pas de capacidade tecnolgica para viabilizar a produo de alimentos, fibras e madeira de maneira a garantir o abastecimento interno, apoiar o crescimento da agroindstria, conter a inflao, e gerar e financiar o desenvolvimento nacional. Est sob a sua coordenao o Sistema Nacional de Pesquisa Agropecuria - SNPA, constitudo por instituies pblicas federais, estaduais, universidades, empresas privadas e fundaes, que, de forma cooperada, executam pesquisas nas diferentes reas geogrficas e campos do conhecimento cientfico. A Embrapa atua por intermdio de Unidades de Pesquisa e de Servios e de Unidades Administrativas, estando presente em quase todos os Estados da Federao, nos mais diferentes biomas brasileiros. A Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos uma das suas 45 Unidades de Pesquisa , sendo o Centro nacional de referncia com misso de viabilizar solues de pesquisa, desenvolvimento e inovao para a sustentabilidade da caprinocultura e da ovinocultura em benefcio da sociedade. Sua atuao est orientada no enfoque territorial e de cadeia produtiva quais sejam: leite de cabra e seus derivados e carnes e peles de caprinos e ovinos. Ao longo dos seus 35 anos, as diversas tecnologias, produtos e servios desenvolvidos pela Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos e seus parceiros esto servindo de base para a modernizao da caprinocultura e da ovinocultura brasileiras, despertando o interesse de outros pases, sobretudo daqueles de clima tropical. Para atender aos desafios presentes e futuros, a Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos vem continuamente renovando e ampliando o quadro de pesquisadores e a carteira de projetos; modernizando a infra-estrutura de Pesquisa e de Transferncia de Tecnologia; e ampliando a cooperao tecnolgica, cientfica e organizacional com universidades europias e americanas e institutos e redes internacionais de pesquisa, especialmente em temas como sistemas de produo sustentveis, mitigao dos efeitos das mudanas climticas, indicao geogrfica, rastreabilidade e certificao, alimentos funcionais, biotecnologia aplicada, sanidade animal, melhoramento gentico e conservao e uso dos recursos genticos. Presentation
The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) linked to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply was established in April 26, 1973 to provide technology to produce food, fiber and wood to ensure domestic supply, support the growth of agribusiness, curb inflation and finance national development. Under the coordination of the National Agricultural Research System- NARS, comprised by federal public institutions, state universities, private companies and foundations, which, in a cooperative way, carry out research in different geographical areas and fields of scientific knowledge. Embrapa operates through Research and Services Units and Administrative Units, being present in almost all the states of the Union, each with its own ecological conditions. Embrapa Goats and Sheep is one of its 45 research units, being the national reference center with the mission to provide feasible solutions for the sustainable development of goat and sheep activity through research, development and innovation, in benefit of the society. Our activities are focused on territorial approach and supply chain of goat milk and derived products and meat and skin of goats and sheep. Over its 35 years the technologies, products and services developed by Embrapa Goats and Sheep and their partners are providing the basis to modernize goat and sheep production in Brazil, attracting interest from other countries, especially those from tropical climates. To meet present and future challenges, Embrapa Goats and Sheep has been continuously renewing and expanding the number of researchers and projects portfolio, modernizing the infrastructure for Research and Technology Transfer, expanding technological, scientific and organizational cooperation with European and American universities and institutes and also international research networks, especially on issues such as sustainable production systems, mitigating the effects of climate change, geographical indication, traceability and certification, functional foods, applied biotechnology, animal health, genetic improvement, conservation and use of genetic resources. Fazenda Crioula
A fazenda Crioula, que representa o Centro Tecnolgico de Convivncia com o Semirido, abriga em seus 595 ha aproximadamente 402 animais. Nela so realizadas pesquisas para o desenvolvimento de sistemas de produo agroflorestais e onde esto concentradas as tecnologias de convivncia com o semirido. So mantidos quatro bancos de germoplasmas de caprinos e ovinos naturalizados (Canind, Moxot, Somalis, Morada Nova) participantes da rede de conservao de recursos genticos da Embrapa.
Ncleos Regionais
Para atender ao crescimento da demanda tecnolgica nas diferentes regies do pas, a Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos mantm hoje dois ncleos regionais. Um deles em Juiz de Fora-MG (Sudeste do Brasil), em parceria com a Embrapa Gado de Leite, onde est localizada uma das principais bacias leiteiras caprinas do pas e outro em Campo Grande-MS (Centro-Oeste do Brasil), regio com grande crescimento na produo de carne ovina. Este ltimo apresenta uma estrutura de auditrio, alojamento e instalaes (currais e pastagem) e animais destinados pesquisa e transferncia de tecnologias para esta regio.
Crioula Farm
This farm represents the Technological Center of the Semiarid with 595 hectares and around 402 animals. Researches are conducted there for the development of agroforestry production systems and where technologies for the semiarid areas are tested. It is kept four germplasm bank of naturalized goats and sheep (Canind, Moxot, Somalis and Morada Nova) that is part of the network of genetic resources conservation at Embrapa.
Regional Centers
To meet the growing of technological demands in the different regions of Brazil, Embrapa Goats and Sheep maintains two regional centers nowadays. One in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais (southeast Brazil), in partnership with Embrapa Dairy Cattle, which is located close to the main dairy goats region in the country and another one in Campo Grande-MS (center-west Brazil), a region with a strong growth in meat sheep production. This last center has auditorium, accommodation, facilities (corrals and pasture) and animals for research and technology transfer for this region.

Agregao de valor
A pequena escala de produo, associada aos custos elevados de produo so fatores que podem ser equacionados pela agregao de valor ao produto primrio. Ao longo de seus mais de 35 anos, a Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos tem desenvolvido uma srie de produtos lcteos processados dentre os quais podem ser destacados uma variedade de mais de 40 produtos como queijos caprinos frescos e maturados , iogurtes com leite de cabra com frutas regionais e doce de leite pastoso e em tablete. Nos ltimos anos, os trabalhos tm sido direcionados para o desenvolvimento de produtos funcionais como queijos probiticos e queijos com adio de frutas e ervas da vegetao nativa. Na rea de carnes, tm se buscado desenvolver produtos como lingias, mortadela e hamburgers para agregao de valor e tambm como alternativas para aproveitamento da carne de animais de descarte.
Sanidade Animal
A natureza de uma doena, especialmente sua epidemiologia e impacto econmico potencial sobre populaes de animais so fatores de elevada importncia para autoridades veterinrias nacionais, quando forem avaliar as ameaas a pases importadores, regies ou rebanhos. Para se estabelecer programas eficientes de controle e erradicao so necessrios testes diagnsticos precisos. Por isto a Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos vem trabalhando em tcnicas imunomoleculares para padronizao e desenvolvimento de novos testes diagnsticos para as lentiviroses de pequenos ruminantes. Estes testes incluem IDGA, Western Blot, Elisa, RT-Nested PCR e Dot Blot. Alm das doenas infecciosas, aquelas de origem parasitria esto entre as que implicam em maiores perdas econmicas. O estudo epidemiolgico das endoparasitoses em ambiente semirido permitiu o desenvolvimento do Controle Estratgico que por muito tempo foi o mais empregado no controle de verminoses em caprinos e ovinos. Atualmente a adaptao do mtodo famacha para as condies brasileiras e os estudos de resistncia gentica s endoparasitoses so as tecnologias que daro um avano neste tema e que o Centro tem investido esforos.

Main Technologies
Food and nutrition The feed of the animals is a challenge for the activity not only because it has a great economic importance in the properties, but also by their scarcity during the dry months of the year, especially in farms located in semiarid regions of Brazil. The development of technology for manipulation of native vegetation with lowering, thinning and enrichment, for its sustainable use in pastoral activity associated with the use of strategies such as mixing multiple supplementation for goats and sheep and protein banks were essential as a base feed for the livestock. In addition to this the use of alternative feeds such as the cashew apple bran and castor bean husk and bran, help reducing the cost of the feeds. Besides these technologies, its also being evaluated the possibility of adding value to the goat milk by the feed, creating a goat milk rich in linoleic acid (CLA). From these tests was possible to establish feed systems for different production situations. Adding value The small scale of production, associated with high production costs are factors that can be attenuated by adding value to primary products. Throughout more than 35 years, Embrapa Goats and sheep have developed a range of processed dairy goat products which can be highlighted over 40 products such as fresh goat cheese and aged, with goat milk yogurt with regional fruit and dulce de leche (tablets and pasty) from milk goats. In recent years, work has been focused on the development of functional products such as cheese and probiotic cheeses added with fruit and native herb vegetation. In the meat area, Embrapa have been sought to develop products such as sausages, salami and hamburgers to add value and as alternative to a better use of the meat from culled animals. Genetics and Animal Breeding Breeding goats and sheep for production purposes associated with the preservation of the genetic heritage of local breeds are the main lines of research at Embrapa Goats and Sheep. Due to that, the Center developed the Program for Genetic Improvement of Meat Sheep and Goats - GENECOC, assisting farmers in selection, breeding and with the tools to implement Participatory Breeding from the experience with the local breed Morada Nova. Its also part of the technologies the development and implementation of the Program for Genetic Improvement of Dairy Goats and the maintenance and control of the Germplasm Bank of naturalized species. Currently, in partnership with other institutions, Embrapa Goats and Sheep is involved in the project to study the Goat Genome. Animal Health The nature of a disease, especially its epidemiology and potential economic impact on animal populations are factors of utmost importance for the national veterinary authorities. To establish effectives programs of control and eradication, accurate diagnostic tests are needed. Therefore Embrapa Goats and Sheep has been working on immunomolecular techniques for standardization and development of new diagnostic tests for lentiviroses on small ruminants. These tests include AGID, Western blot, ELISA, RT-Nested PCR and Dot Blot. Besides infectious diseases, parasites are among those with greater economic losses. The epidemiological study of endoparasitoses in semiarid environment allowed the development of the Strategic Control that, for a long time, has been the most used nematode control in goats and sheep. More recently, the Famacha method was adapted to the Brazilian conditions and studies of genetic resistance to endoparasitoses are strategic areas for this Center.

Reproduo Animal
A Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos foi uma das instituies pioneiras no uso de biotecnologia da reproduo em pequenos ruminantes. Alm de prticas de manejo reprodutivo, foi desenvolvido, com outros parceiros, dispositivo eletrnico para diagnstico de gestao e protocolos de coleta, congelamento de smen e embries, alm de tcnicas para inseminao artificial e inovulao. Foi na Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos que nasceu os primeiros cabritos advindos da tcnica de bipartio de embries. Os esforos atualmente esto concentrados em tcnicas para aumentar a fertilidade com o uso de smen congelado atravs do aprimoramento da tcnica de inseminao e do uso de protemica, alm dos protocolos de superovulao em caprinos.
Sistemas de Produo
Todo o conhecimento gerado sobre componentes dos sistemas de produo permitiu o desenvolvimento de modelos para vrios tipos de produtores nas diferentes regies do Pas. Estes sistemas combinam produo em pastagens nativas, em pasto cultivado com irrigao na poca seca e engorda e produo de leite em confinamento. Em outra linha, esto os sistemas de base agroecolgica como o Sistema Agrossilvipastoril, especialmente desenvolvido para reduzir o uso da queima e permitir produo animal e vegetal em harmonia com a floresta nativa. Atualmente esto sendo desenvolvidas pesquisas de valorao de servios ambientais no sistema agrossilvipastoril, visando agregar valor e massificar seu uso.
Animal Reproduction
Embrapa Goats and Sheep was one of the pioneering institutions in the use of biotechnology in small ruminants breeding. In addition to reproductive management practices, was developed with other partners, electronic device for pregnancy diagnosis and protocols for collecting and freezing semen and embryos, and also techniques for artificial insemination and embryo transfer. It was at Embrapa Goats and Sheep that was born the first kids coming from the technique of embryo splitting. Efforts are currently focused on techniques to enhance fertility using frozen semen through the improvement of insemination and the use of proteomics, in addition to the protocols of superovulation in goats.
Production Systems
All knowledge generated from the components of the production systems enabled the development of models for various types of producers in different regions of the country. These systems combine production in native pasture, in cultivated pasture under irrigation during the dry season and meat and milk production in feedlots . On the other hand, there are the basic agro-ecological systems like agrosilvopastural specially developed to reduce the use of fire on the land, allowing livestock and crop production in harmony with the native forest. Currently studies are being developed for valuation of environmental services in agrosilvopastoral system, aiming to add value and spread its use.

Cabrafest
O evento realizado anualmente em uma das principais bacias leiteiras caprinas do pas promovido pela Embrapa Caprinos e Ovinos, Embrapa Gado de Leite, Associao dos Criadores de Cabras Leiteiras da Zona da Mata - MG e Prefeitura Municipal de Coronel Pacheco, e congrega um workshop com discusses tcnicas, mostra de animais e festival gastronmico.
Cabrafest
The event held annually close to one of the main dairy goats region in the country is sponsored by Embrapa Goats and Sheep, Embrapa Dairy Cattle, Association of Dairy Goats Breeders of Zona da Mata - MG and the City Council of Coronel Pacheco, with technical discussions, animals expo and gastronomic festival.
