Introduction
Steel production has evolved over many centuries and new technological improvements are being made daily. The making, shaping and treating of steel are critical to product design, application, cost and performance. Therefore, knowledge of these processes is essential to employees working in producing, supplying and designing iron and steel products. These employees need basic understanding of steel production, making, shaping and treatment to final products. This course will be an introductory journey for those who have non technical background in metallurgical engineering. It is hoped after taking this course; the participants will understand the technical aspects of steel manufacturing, properties and applications.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to: i. Understand the basics of steelmaking and how the ore to final product affects the steel quality. ii. Explain basic operational principles during steelmaking iii. Compare and contrast different iron making and steelmaking techniques. iv. Identify problems arising from steelmaking process and how to address it. v. Future technologies in iron making and steelmaking and how it will impact Malaysia.

Course Facilitators:
Assoc. Prof. Ahmad Badri Ismail joined USM in 1990 and has published more than 30 papers. His research interest covers lead free solder materials, metal alloys, and advanced materials. He is the chairman of steel standards technical committee at SIRIM, and also a member of the MLVK advisory board.

Dr. Sheikh Abdul Rezan is a lecturer that joined USM Engineering campus in 2010. Prior to this, he was pursuing his higher studies overseas. He has completed his PhD in Materials Engineering (Pyrometallurgy) from University of New South Wales, Australia in 2010. He has published a total of 39 journals and conference papers combined in the field of extractive metallurgy, high temperature ceramics and mineralogy. His research interest include pyro-processing of titanium and iron minerals. He is currently working on the recycling of EAF slag and reduction kinetics study of titanium minerals. He has done consultancy and research work in the field of ironmaking and steelmaking for Southern Steel Sdn. Bhd. and Ann Joo Steel Bhd.
