Introducing Toon Boom Digital Pro


Toon Boom Digital Pro is a complete 2D animation solution that offers a variety of tools to suit the users needs from the first steps in pre-production to the end of production. There are different 2D animation types: traditional, paperless and cut-out. Toon Boom Digital Pro has the power to handle them all and even merge them.

This guide helps you to install and launch the program. You will then be shown the basics of how to start your production. This also contains a list of the workflow-based documentation and reference material which is supplied with the software. Toon Boom Digital Pro is a powerful 2D animation toolset, allowing studios to create high-quality animation for video, websites, television, film, games, mobile devices and training applications. It is flexible and adaptable to all animation styles, and fits seamlessly with your production processes including drawing, painting, 2

animating, camera and special effects, compositing, rendering and playback. Adapt the toolset to any workflow that your project requires, including a cut-out/reuse pipeline Scan in your drawings or use digital drawing tools to go completely paperless Apply versatile ink and paint, colour editing and pen style editing features Animate a character or prop based on a skeletal framework and animate the joints using inverse kinematics Animate a character or prop based on a source drawing and destination drawing using morphing tools Lip-sync characters and compute lip positions automatically Create special effects like blurs, shadows and glows without having to render to another application Create camera moves and multiplane effects using 3D axes Create and maintain networks to process effects and composite drawings Store and manage animation assets easily using the Template Library Reuse elements, drawings, effects and compositing networks for other projects Render all or part of a scene based on data in the current scene or from a directory of frames Use rendering at any point throughout the production process without exporting to third-party software Preview and play back animation during the production process

System Requirements
Toon Boom Digital Pro supports Windows and Mac OS X. The minimum hardware requirements to run the software are:

512 MB RAM minimum (1 GB recommended) 300 MB of hard disk space for the software Monitor supporting 1280 x 1024 display resolution TWAIN scanner (optional) Wacom tablet for drawing (recommended) Three-button or wheel mouse (recommended)

Macintosh OS X Minimum Requirements


Mac OS X v10.4 Power PC G5 or Intel (recommended) ATI or nVidia video card fully supporting OpenGL with 128 MB of RAM (minimum), 1GB (recommended)

Windows Minimum Requirements


Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows XP SP2 2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor (recommended) NVIDIA video card fully supporting OpenGL with 128 MB of RAM (minimum)

Installing Toon Boom Digital Pro


When installing on a network a network dongle is required. Refer to the specific network installation document.

Installing on Mac
1. 2. 3. 4. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer. Double-click the Mac OS X folder to open the installation package. Double-click the installation package to launch the installation program. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Installing on Windows
1. 2. Insert the CD-ROM into your computer. Click on Install Digital Pro link. If the installation package does not open automatically, use Windows Explorer to locate and open the folder in your CD-ROM drive, then double-click on setup.exe. The InstallShield Wizard opens. Follow the instructions.

Getting Started in Toon Boom Digital Pro


When Toon Boom Digital Pro is launched, you must begin by opening a scene. The method you use to launch the program will depend on the operating system you are currently using. Each scene is stored in a file folder that you must name when you first create it.

Launching Toon Boom Digital Pro


1. Open Toon Boom Digital Pro. Macintosh: Double-click the Toon Boom Digital Pro icon or select Applications > Toon Boom Digital Pro. Windows: Double-click the Toon Boom Pro icon or select Start > Programs > Toon Boom Animation > Digital Pro. Toon Boom Digital Pro opens, displaying the Welcome Screen.

Creating a New Scene


Once you have opened the Welcome Screen: 1. In the Project Name field, type the new scenes name.

The Project Directory field displays the folders location. To save in a different location, click on the Choose button to open the dialog box and choose a different directory. Click the Create button to add a new scene folder and open the scene in the Toon Boom Digital Pro interface. The Scene Setup dialog box opens. Enter the number of drawing elements and frames desired.

Click on the OK button, and the scene opens.

When the new scene is loaded, the default interface is displayed: Camera View: Use this view to draw images, ink and paint your work, create hand-drawn animations, animate cut-out puppets, create camera moves and do your scene compositing. Timeline View: Use this view to manage your elements and transformations over time, and edit keyframes and timing. Pen View: Use this view to manage your pen styles and create texture brushes. Colour View: Use this view to create palettes and colour pots to paint your characters and drawings. Other views can be displayed by clicking on their tab. Network View: Use this view to composite the elements of your animation to create a single image and to add special effects. Xsheet View: Use this view to manage your elements and timing on a virtual exposure sheet.

Toon Boom Digital Pro Interface


The User Interface (UI) has a top menu providing access to the softwares main commands.

Each view has a menu and a toolbar that is specific to it. Click on the tabs above each view to access other views available in Toon Boom Digital Pro.

Toon Boom Digital Pro has many different views that can be managed and rearrranged to suit the users needs. Toon Boom

Digital Pro provides a set of different workspaces. These workspaces can be selected in the Workspace toolbar.
