Happy Holidays!
by Marah Larsen Editor in Chief This December, the Fondy Free Press really got into the Christmas spirit. If you havent already seen, we chose to make our own Fondy High gingerbread house for the cover of this months issue. One person that made this possible is Mrs. Frank. She teaches the Food, Family, and Society class 7th hour, and was one the the main driving forces behind this project. Also special thanks goes to her class, who helped make the main structure. Our amazing culinary and artistic skills aside, I hope everyone has a great Christmas break. From all of us on the Free Press staff, Happy Holidays!

Mr. Mcdowell uses the old eating right and excercising routine, but apparently it is working, seeing as he is currently in first place. however they do it, a cash reward, and more importantly, bragging rights, are on the line. The last weigh-in is January 19 where both the individual and buddy team winners will be determined. Champ or not, the weight that will be lost and toning up that is achieved for each contestant is rewarding enough.

Challenging each other is an ultimate motivator to accomplish a goal. Mr. Mcdowell, who is partners with Mr. Sitter in the buddy competition, would like his comepetitors to know that Mr. Sitter has never lost any competition he has entered. Good luck to all the teachers involved!

The Best Gift to Give

A Gift of time is more valuable than unneeded material presents.

WALKING IN THE FRONT doors of the nearest grocery store, the ringing vibrates through ones eardrums towards the guilty pull of heart. Some frantically pull out the only change they have left in their pockets and toss it in the bucket. The jolly bell ringer smiles and graciously thanks them as they walk on with their busy life. They say the holiday season is a time for giving, but many students dont realize how they can help. One easy way would be working with the Key Club here at Fondy High. They help with many events, spreading their gifts from single people to our community including the Ian Lock Blood Drive, Lakeshore Parents Night In/Kids Night Out, Pier Big Event, Arc Bingo Christmas Party, Riverside Winter Celebration, Caroling at nursing homes, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Sigma Holiday House, and adopting Kettle where you invite friends two families for Christmas from and family to donate. Not So Black Friday

by Jessica Schneider Staff Writer
YOURE STANDING IN line, freezing your tush off, and not to mention its 2:30 AM. Is it really worth it? Apparently to many Americans it is. The economy continues to rebound with a 30% increase over last years black friday sales, while online retailers saw a 20% increase. Senior Crystal Sammer worked this past Black Friday at Aeropostale where they were swarmed with customers all day. Other people dont see the importance of waking up so early just to get $20 off of something. People like this spend the day grocery shopping or putting up their christmas tree. Mr. Chiesa, math teacher here at Fondy High was one of the people to spend the day grocery shopping.

Teacher of the Month: Mrs. Daniels

Mrs.Daniels is an excellent teacher who loves fun and games.
by Luckie Cha Staff Writer
UN, DEUX, TROIS, allez! shouted Madame Daniels as she started her Flyswatter game. As the students dash to their target, other students cheered each other on. When the students are done racing, Madame Daniels thinks of the next students to race each other. This is just another day in Mrs. Daniels French class. She has games and prizes for the winners of those games. She has created games for everyone like one that makes you run to the French word that she says and one that is kinda like a game of hide-andseek. Her rewards are mostly euros, but sometimes she will give candy out as a reward. You can use those euros that she gives to buy rewards and treats from her. She runs a more different class than other teachers do. Its easy to learn French and have fun when your teacher is Mrs. Daniels. French is fun! said Mrs. Daniels, I love communicating in a different language. All those experiences make French easier and has helped me build confidence. Shes a great teacher because she teaches stuff we want to know. said sophomore Jenny Schmitz. Shes a good cookie maker. I miss all the games and random conversations we had. Shes a bad drawer, said sophomore Nick Nutter, but shes energetic and her class is very entertaining. Madame Daniels fell in love with French when she was in college. Her high school didnt have French, but she still had her fun with other languages. She then went on to UW Madison to study French and that is where she fell in love with French. She took her studying to cities like Rennes, Quebec, and Senegal Mrs. Daniels received a lot of her teaching ideas from other teachers when she was a student teacher, but she got most of ideas for the games she has from her students. To herself, Mrs. Daniels is a relatively serious person that still enjoys fun now and then. Shes also a deep thinker and enjoys learning new stuff. Her students find it so much fun to be in her class. Her creative ideas, jolly personality, and extremely different classes make her an awesome teacher. Sign up for her class because Its French! shouted Sophomore Logan Melius. Mrs. Daniels lectures to the class

Better Athletes = Better People

EVERY SPORT IN THE world gives each athlete wonderful qualities which are useful in real life as well as on the field. Leadership, teamwork, and strength in the face of adversity are just some of the great qualities of every sport. Sports form athletes into great people; many of the most influential leaders played some sort of team sport. Three particular sports are the best at creating better athletes and people. Evans, the former light heavyweight champion, was a wrestler at Michigan State, becoming one of only three wrestlers to defeat wrestling legend Greg Jones. However, wrestling is not really the most popular sport and very few athletes sign up to wrestle. Due to some peoples clouded views it loses respect amongst other sports. Baseball requires great handeye coordination as the hitter has to track the ball and hit at the exact right time to avoid a strike. Many pitches are at ninety miles or faster leaving just four seconds from pitchers hand to catchers glove for the batter to hit the ball. If the batter hits the ball, the infielders as well as outfielders have to track the ball and catch it. Some hits require the fielder to catch the ball quickly and make a decisive throw to avoid runs from scoring. However, baseball is not timed so it physically drains players. These sports are the best at their respective qualities: leaving the athletes better set for life. These three sports can increase the skill sets needed to be successful in other sports. Great UFC fighters, among the most well-rounded athletes, have been wrestlers as well as football players or baseball players.

Fondy Hockey: The Keys to Preparation

by Joe Blagoue Staff Writer
THERE IS SOMETHING special about going to a Fond du Lac Cardinal hockey game. Whether you are a student, a parent, or just a fan thats looking to have a good time, a Cardinal hockey game will never leave you disappointed. The second you walk into the Blue Line Family Ice Center, you are surrounded by a cheerful and energetic atmosphere that comes hand in hand with the game of hockey. As for the players, they have been at the rink since 5:30 preparing for the upcoming battle. Warm-ups begin at six o clock, when the team takes a light jog around the rink and then participates in various stretching exercises. The mindset of the players slowly changes from relaxed and carefree to serious and focused. The second you enter the Cardinals locker room, you are engulfed in an entirely new, more intense and serious atmosphere. There is the crackle of Velcro as pads are adjusted, the distinct sound of hockey tape as players work on their sticks, and the grinding noise of steel against stone as skate blades are sharpened. The team gets more and more focused as the minutes pass. Soon enough every player is sitting in their stalls with their jerseys on. Coach Sarazin walks into the locker room and sees the faces of twenty focused and determined athletes. He takes a couple steps around the room as he assesses his team, and then says a few words about having a good warm up. He says the game starts when warm ups do, that the intensity has to be there right away. The players are silent until he is done talking, and then begin filing out of the locker room to take the ice. After warm ups the team returns to the locker room, more poised and confident than before. They sit down and listen to Coach Sarazin as he goes over their game plan. He talks about what forecheck he wants the team to execute, and the key players on the other team that must be shut down. All the while, his team doesnt say a word. Every player knows what they must do to help the team win. As Coach Sarazin leaves, the captains start a poundaround, where every player hits knuckles with his surrounding team mates. The captain hits his teammate sitting to his left, then that teammate hits the player on his left. Once the poundaround cycles back to the captain the team stands up, joins hands, and recites the Lords Prayer. Only when the pound-around and the team prayer are complete can the team walk out of the locker room and take the ice for player introductions. The team skates out onto the ice as fans cheer. Some players take a few laps around their net, while others simply skate to the goal line. The rink goes silent as the announcer begins to introduce the starting line ups. First, the visiting team, starting with the goalie and ending with the center of the opening line. All the while the rink remains silent except for scattered cheers from opposing fans who had decided to make the commute, or the tapping of sticks from visiting players. The Cardinals stand on their own goal line, showing no signs of fear or unease, staring down their opponent. Now it is time for Fondy to be announced. The rink starts to get louder as more fans begin cheering. Each starter skates out to the blueline as their name is called. The cheering increases with every player. When the final starter is announced, the rest of the team joins them on the blueline. Everyone in the arena is then asked to remove their hats for the playing of the National Anthem. The entire building listens as the familiar tune drifts throughout the rink. Both teams stand on their respective bluelines, displaying both pride and respect toward their country. As the final notes conclude, the teams skate The Varsity Hockey Team lined up for National Anthem. to their nets and listen to the captains as they say a few final words of encouragement before the game begins. Movies To Watch This Christmas
by Alex Slater Staff Writer

Keep warm with an old holiday classic Must-see Christmas movies: The Christmas season is upon us, and all December long, TV networks have been running Christmas specials galore. ABC has its yearly 25 days of Christmas; NBCs Thursday lineup of Community, 30 Rock and the Office has had its Christmas specials; Comedy Central has its 13 days of Christmas, and so on and so forth. Always popular are the classic Christmas movies, shown seemingly on a never-ending loop: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Charlie Browns Christmas and many more. Many of these movies, such as Rudolph and the original cartoon version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, were made in the 1960s and are still

favorites with all ages today. Others, such as The Polar Express, are much newer and also family favorites.

Adventure ensues, and Rudolph gets to lead Santas sleigh, a classic happy ending.

adventure and a reaffirmed belief in Christmas. This is also Jessie Schneiders all time favorite movie.

Holiday To-Do List

by Sydney Inks Staff Writer As the Holiday season approaches, you may be wondering what there is to do over your winter break. In the area, there are a few different events and attractions that may be amusing as you vacation. For those of you who enjoy winter sports, Sunburst in Kewaskum, is open eveyday, even on Christmas. The skiing, snowboarding, and tubing hills will hopefully be covered in snow and lessons will be available. A famous group that is based in New York City, The TransSiberian Orchestra, will be performing on December 26th, at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. Enjoy their Christmas tour as they perform Christmas Eve and other stories. On December 31st, celebrate the New Year under a stream of fireworks in the bluffs of La Crosse. Travel to Egg Harbor this holiday season for a horseback ride by candlelight. Enjoy open ice at Blueline here in Fond du Lac on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Dont forget, Lakeside Park has a continuous light show to six songs playing every half an hour throughout the holidays. December 2010

The Polar Express

Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer

The story that everyone knows and loves: the reindeer with the bright red nose, picked on by his classmates, who finds friends that are misfits like himself.

Holiday Traditions
by Cameron Sawyer Staff Writer

Over the years holiday traditions have been passed on from your grandparents to your parents and eventually down to you. No matter what religion you belong to this is the season of giving. We like to show each other how much we care about them by giving gifts, cards, maybe even just by giving grandma a hug. It really doesnt matter how big or small it is; its the fact that you took time out of your day to think about someone else. Thats why the longest lasting tradition of the holidays is giving. For those who celebrate Christmas the most basic tradition would be the Christmas tree. Doesnt matter if its a freshly cut down real tree or if it just came off the shelves of

Wal-Mart a Christmas tree is a universal tradition. Of coarse after getting the tree is the fun of getting to take an afternoon putting light and decorations on. For those more religious families on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day you might be seen going to church for the holiday service, but of course we know Christmas morning as waking up extra early and opening up presents. Well maybe that was true as children, but once the youngest is up the whole family is up. My family spends a day going to beaver dam to a tree farm where we cut down our own tree, said senior Rachel Schmitz. After that we stop at the nearest Pizza Hut for supper. Once where back in Fond

du Lac we drive around looking at all the lights where our last stop is the park. For those who celebrate Hanukkah, forget the whole Christmas tree idea. They use a candelabrum, basically a nine-branched Menorah that signifies each night of the

8-day tradition. One candle is lit every night until the final night. The final light is called a Shamash, which is raised above or below the rest and is available for light use since its forbidden to us the other eight for this. Now children of this Jewish culture could be lucky and receive one present each night of the celebration or on the final night receive their present. No matter what you do during these holidays everyones experience is individual to themselves and their family. The time we spend with them and the memories that we make stay with us for our lifetime, but the traditions we pass on stay forever.

EVERY SUNDAY YOU GO to a building where you drink the blood and eat the body of a 2,000 year old Jewish carpenter who could walk on water. If this is true for you then the movie Religulous will probably offend you. Personal religious views aside, this movie is funny and entertaining, while still poking holes in a few major religions. Bill Maher is the host of this documentary/comedy. He travels across the world talking to Christians, Muslims, Scientologists, TV Evangelists and Mormons. And dont worry, hes completely unbiased. He makes them all look equally moronic, although his rants against Christianity seem especially well-informed and on target. When Maher pointed out

Why Walk on Water When We Have Boats?

that the Bible says homosexuals will burn in hell, a priest responded, I think the Bible meant homosexuality was acceptable, obviously contradicting his own religion. Also, he tells a Christian amusement park Jesus that in Egypt, hundreds of years before the story of Jesus, there was a god who had a virgin birth, walked on water, healed the sick and was baptised by a man who was later beheaded. Throughout the movie, Maher gives some background of his faith, and current lack of. He tells about his parents different beliefs and of how and why they stopped attending church when he was a teenager. As a proud non-believer I would have to say I might be a bit biased. I find this movie very entertaining, informative, and funny. Maher thouroughly embarasses the worlds major faiths and is funny while doing it. In his ending comments he urges all moderately religious people to come to their senses and abandon religion. I would have to agree, because if you actually listen and dont just dismiss what hes saying, this movie should make you question your faith.

Harry Potter Part 1 Flying to the Big Screen

Amarah Sharif Staff Writer
MANY WORLDWIDE Harry Potter enthusiasts have long been waiting for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which premiered November 18, 2010 worldwide and November 19, 2010, in theaters in the United States and United Kingdom this year. Since it is directed by David Yates, its jam packed with thrilling and heartracing special effects, giving it an 8 out of 10 stars on IMDB. Approximately 146 minutes long, the film is a great way to spend an exciting and bloodpumping weekend night with friends. The film is rated PG-13. This recent movie is based upon the seventh installment of the Harry Potter series of books by J.K. Rowling. The books revolve around a boy named Harry Potter and his adventures in attending a sorcery school while defeating the evil Voldemort. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Harry is on a mission to destroy Voldemorts secret to immortality called Horcruxes, dark objects unknown to Harry that keep Voldemort alive. Harry and his harsh travels to find Voldemort become increasingly difficult from envior mental factors and exhaustion, leading to major disputes between his friends. When they finally pull through and reunite, theyre faced to realize that continuing their journey would be potentially dangerous and they would have to decide whether to risk their lives and continue. It was a lot better than most people think! It was almost exactly like the book. cheerfully exclaimed Angelica Maney, a junior. Sophmore Katie Sternitzky also agreed. It was pure awesome, especially all the special effects. They all, including myself, had agreed that this was one of the best Harry Potter movies released of all time that weve seen since it had a lot more action, suspense, and excitement than most of the Harry Potter movies released. The movie is being split into two parts because it was hard for the producer to fit all of the story into just one movie without cutting out too many important parts or making it too long to watch. Making over sixhundred million dollars in gross revenue, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been a major hit lately in the box office. Its a great movie for those who like Harry Potter or just like movies with amazing, fantasy graphics. But dont wait, Part 2 comes out to theaters on July 15, 2011, so make sure to hit your local theaters this month to catch the all new features of Part 1 on the big screen for the holidays before its too late!

Bieber Fever Makes Me Sick
by Holley Steffes Staff Writer UNFORTUNATLY, WE all know who Justin Bieber is. Whether you like his music or not, you know who he is. Hes that little blond-haired 16 year old wannabe rapper. If it was not for the famous site of Youtube, Justin Bieber would probably still be unknown. In 2008, his videos he published on Youtube were finally noticed by none other than Usher and Justin Timberlake. It is said that the two of them had a little falling out about who would get to sign him to Island Records, whose owner is Chris Blackwell. Eventually, Usher won the fight, introducing Justin Bieber to the real music world. Why on Earth either of them would even care about signing Justin Bieber remains unknown. Justin used good rappers such as Drake, Usher, and Kanye West to make his way to fame. Without them featuring him in their music videos, and playing it like hes their homeboy, he would be nothing. Its all about who you know in the industry. Im not sure if its the fact that Justin has been seen in music videos with these rappers that make people like him, but it seems that way to me. I dont understand why people like listening to his music. Most of his fans consist of eight year old screaming little girls, who of course love his whiney and too repetitive songs. Another really lame thing is how much stuff you see with Justin Biebers face plastered all over it. Go to the mall and take your pick. Do you want a Bieber shirt? A Bieber necklace? A Bieber doll? Theres plenty of options. Ill pass on them all personally. That is something I just cant stand, when an artist literally allows his face to be put on anything, just to make a few extra bucks. As if he doesnt have enough money! Justin Biebers music is not only lame and unoriginal, but its also already super overplayed. I predict that he will be a shortlived sell out. Get some taste and listen to some good tunes, and while youre at it, you might want to check up on a Bieber fever antidote.

Listen to the Top 3 Bieber Fever Antidotes:

1. Just a Dream by Nelly This is a newer song that hasnt been out too long, and I really dig it. Nelly is still putting out good music, with great lyrics. Youll get hooked on this one. 2. Back that A** Up by Juvenile - I love this song! The music video is good, and also kind of funny. This song seriously just makes you want to jam. 3. Beat It Up by Gucci & Trey Songz - This song has an awesome beat and is the perfect song to cruise to in your car with your friends.

Late Nights Funniest Comic Back on TV

by Alex Slater Staff Writer FROM WARNER Brothers Studios in Hollywood, its Conan! Cheers erupt from the studio as the opening theme song plays with the new animated intro. Andy Richters familiar voice yells out the guests names of that night, accompanied by the crowds applause. Now, heres your host..... Conan OBrien! The curtain opens, and late nights comeback kid, all 64 of him (67 if you include the hair) bounds out onto the shiny new studio floor, the wide-open, larger-than-life set matching Page 12 his charismatic personality. Grinning his trademark grin, he points to his cheering audience, darting forward to shake hands and hug those lucky enough to get front-row seats. He points to Andy, his trusted sidekick for over 10 years, then turns and points to his band (renamed the Basic Cable Band, in honor of the shows new home on cable TV), finishing off his entrance with a high jump. This is OBriens new show, the aptly titled Conan on TBS. The Tonight Show fiasco at NBC this past January between OBrien and his predecessor, Jay Leno, caused a national television debacle, endless hours of press coverage, and a national movement in support of OBrien, called Im With Coco after the hosts nickname. OBrien eventually left the Tonight Show, ceding the hosts chair back over to the aging and pathetically unfunny Leno, with a $35 million severance package for himself and his staff and a flood of supporters promising to boycott NBC and follow the gangly Irish host wherever he chose to go next. OBrien chose to funnel that support into a 30-city summer concert tour, aptly named the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour (OBriens departure involved a clause forbidding him from performing on TV, Internet or radio until September 1). The tour was a huge success, with every venue sold out, from Radio City Music Hall in NYC to the Orpheum Theatre in Ontario, Canada and multiple venues in between. In the midst of the tour, OBrien revealed that he had accepted a deal with TBS for a new show on basic cable. The show recently passed its one-month anniversary, with OBrien joking that he hopes hell pass his Tonight Show reign of seven months. Since premiering on basic cable, OBrien has defeated both Leno and Letterman in ratings, and held his own against friends and competitors Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert over on Comedy Central. TeamCoco. com, the website for Conans new show and everything Conan-related, has thousands of requests for show tickets each month. The show has had a slew of entertaining guests and great musical performances, as well as appearances by Conans old friends and characters he created on his first show, Late Night with Conan OBrien. With such an excellent upstart, TBS can look forward to many months and maybe even years with OBrien holding their 10PM slot.

Fallout New Vegas Review

By Steven Schrubbe Staff Writer
FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS has come out! When I received a copy of the game (that was preordered) I was stoked! This new Fallout is about you in Las Vegas. The range of modifying weapons and creating your character just got expanded. Also the space is amazing compared to the previous games. New faction-tofaction choices and many new enemies are available in this game. Enemies are now getting harder with each level you see them. New enemies such as the flame salamanders and giant mantis are a hassle if youve never seen them. Dont freak out! The game still has the same style of your Pipboy and the same leveling system. Perks are now getting interesting. They have changed the level perks to be more creative. Fallout is famous for its off the wall creatures and vast world to explore. It was one of the new saga that added karma. Remember karma is still in this game. So if you just waste a couple of people, you will have bad karma becoming Evil (Which is better in my opinion). You as a person in this game is an explorer at your own command in a apocalyptic wasteland in the Las Vegas region. You have varying choices as a normal feature from any of the Obsidian games. So if you choose to stay on the main storyline or just roam in the vast wasteland thats up to you. New weapons and challenges, that a hardcore fallout player wants, are resourceful. New voice acting and questing companions are a few of the new improved fallouts arsenal. I was on the first quest outside of vault 101, and I saw a DeathClaw! Since I was a noob, ( new unexperienced player) it killed me. Death claws now are ranging from babies to Legendary (the strongest level). The new armors and customization is unparallel to the last Fallout games. Although this game has a lot of good material, the game system will crash or lock. Fallout does glitch so be aware to your prodesessor. New patches will be issued online or take it to the nearest GameStop or GameCrazy to have it updated! This game is for Xbox, PS3, and PC.So if you want to beat up a giant mantis or take on a clan of DeathClaws, you will have to decide with your own fate.

ICP? Not for Me

by Mitch Tagliapietra Entertainment Editor
LAST NIGHT AN EVIL clown came and told me the message of the Dark Carnival and that I had to respect this message and tell it to the world by releasing six albums called joker cards. He also informed me heaven is actually called Shangri-La. The only way for people to get there is to buy these records and follow the true juggalo life.. No Im not coming off a bad acid trip, believe it or not this is the basis for the band Insane Clown Posse, who are a skid mark on the figurative underwear of the music industry. Urbandictionary.com defines a juggalo as the product of our highly modernizing worlds effect on the ignorant, low, human. They represent regression in almost every sense. To be a little more specific, a Juggalo is a die-hard follower of ICP. They occasionally don clown facepaint, always travel in packs and like to attack lone individuals who arent down with the clown. This abomination (for any of you ICP fans reading this, I probably lost you with that big word) originated in Fond du Detroit in the early 90s.The ignorant, uneducated, white trash members of ICP, were just living their sorry lives out trying their best to be black, and rapping in their original group, Inner City Posse. Until one faithful night when one of these products of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome fell asleep, most likely after huffing a bunch of paint, and had the now famous hallucination/ dream of a clown telling him what basically is the gospel of the juggalos. If you thought Scientology was crazy read up on this so called prophecy. Apparently the supernatural clown/paint huffing induced hallucination was wrong. ICP has come out with 6 awful Whack albums, which can best be used as frisbees, and the world still hasnt ended. A recent embarassment of ICP was in their song Miracles, in which they say, Magnets, how the %@#! do those things work? Im not even sure what I can say to that or if anything needs to be said; the pure stupidity of that statement speaks for itself. Even Saturday Night Live took a shot at these paint huffing, Faygo (a cheap dollar store brand of soda that juggalos drink like David Hasselhoff does scotch) drinking, inbred idiots. To see how other people in Fond du lac felt about ICP, I asked English teacher Mr. Poquette his opinion. He said, Im all for people listening to whatever music they like, but its tough to take people who listen to a lot of ICP seriously as music fans. Its like people who eat a lot of candy; yea its food but not full of much substance. Then again I grew up listening to N.W.A., Run- DMC, Easy-E and Public Enemy. I listen to a wide variety of music today, including those groups. So maybe people just need time to find good stuff. Anyone who wants to talk good music should stop by room 1230 anytime to do so. On a more serious note, Juggalos have been starting to be considered a gang by law enforcement agencies around the country. Many juggalo related acts of violence and even deaths have occured. Basically large groups of them roam around looking to beat up normal functioning citizens in our society, who bathe more than once a month and dont weigh 300 lbs. But thankfully there is hope; Anti-Juggalo leagues have formed, which protest ICP shows around the country. So whether beating fans with microphones or rapping about how being a juggalo will get you into heaven, its safe to say that ICP is not for me. (And hopefully not you either.)

Confederate Rags
Sad Reminders of Hate
by Marah Larsen Editor-In-Chief
DURING THE CIVIL War the Confederate flag was seen as a symbol of the division of the United States and also, more importantly, slavery and segregation. These feelings have not changed. To this day, people still display these flags(most often in or on their cars) even though many find them offensive, and for good reason. Countless racist hate groups have used them, the most widely known being the Ku Klux Klan. This violent group tortured and killed thousands. Having these flags out in public means condoning these acts; its like saying that hatred felt for a particular group of people is okay. Things like this are exactly why we have the problems between racial groups that we do. Though some people may say that racism in the United States is a thing of the past, I couldnt disagree more. Though it may not be as severe as it was(which may or may not be true), racism is still an ongoing issue. One of the things that Ive tried to understand is why exactly people do this. I dont know whether its to get attention or if its because they think its funny for some reason, but either way its wrong (and kind of annoying if you ask me). If something like the swastika isnt seen as acceptable in society, why should the Confederate flag? Im not saying that one is more severe than the other, but both have negative connotations and symbolize aspects of history that we should all be ashamed of. Yes, I understand that the Confederate flag is a large part of Southern, and American, history; but even so, these flags belong in museums, not the front porch. The war ended over 100 years ago. The North won. Lets move on.

The Rich Get Richer While the Poor Get Poorer

The Wealth Inequality Dilemma
by Zach Peltonen Editor
I BELIEVE IN TAXING THE, rich not giving them tax breaks. When I say rich Im talking mostly about the top 1% of Americans, the people that make 440 times the amount that average people make. America has always been a country in which success comes on the backs of the working man. Back in the early 20th century, when workers tried to unionize for better wages and better working conditions, the federal government almost never sided with the laborers. Instead they sided with management, even sending in troops to break up strikes. The subjects of layoffs have always been laborers first, management never. Its the middle and lower classes less. If this occurs, families are able to spend more of the money they receive from their paychecks. This increases consumer spending, putting more money into the private sector and leading to more jobs being created. So in fact, it is not the trickledown effect that spurs growth, but the trickle up effect. If the middle and lower classes are doing good, then the economy should do good as a result. This is why I think there should be a tax increase for people making 1 million or more a year, and a tax decrease for people making less than that. This is also why I support plans like the new health care law and other programs that comprise the social safety net. Examples of this are Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, and welfare. The main goal of these plans is to unburden the lower classes and provide a net so to speak, for when they fall. These prevent consumer spending from dipping too much. This may draw ire from Republicans who think that it should be every man for himself. I would argue that this point of view is contrary to the way of America. It should be all for one and one for all. This may seem contradictory to my previous statement of taxing the rich more than the middle and lower classes, but in fact it adheres exactly to that rule. If the pay ratio for two men is 10: 1, then the tax ratio should be 10: 1 also, or something close to that. Instead, people making more are making more by the year, and people making less, are making less by the year. Hence the term, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer.

it is not the trickle down effect that spurs growth, but the trickle up effect.
a wonder since our economy runs mainly on private sector growth and consumer spending. The majority of the spending comes from the middle and lower classes. So it makes sense to tax
