In The Yearning for Relief Klaas van Walraven traces the history of the Sawaba movement in Niger and its rebellion against the French-protected regime during the 1960s. The book analyses its guerrilla campaign and failure, followed by the movements destruction.

In Transforming Innovations in Africa the authors explore how external innovations (products, technologies, services, institutions and processes) that were envisaged, developed and designed elsewhere, came to be innovatively and sometimes unexpectedly appropriated and transformed within Africa.

Matthew Rutz, Brown University

The Bibliographie Raisonne zu den Indo-Ariern im Alten Orientt unifies and enlarges four bibliographies on the IndoAryans in the ancient Near East compiled by M. Mayrhofer between 1966 and 2006, now covering a time span from 1884 until 2011.

In Bodies of Knowledge in Ancient Mesopotamia Matthew Rutz investigates how libraries and archives can be used to study ancient diviners, an approach illustrated using one familys cuneiform tablet collection from Emar on the Syrian Euphrates (ca. 1375-1175 BCE).

Crossing Boundaries in Tokugawa Society presents a vivid picure of the life of Suzuki Bokushi (17701842), an elite villager in a snowy province of Japan, focusing on his interaction with the changing social and cultural environment of the late Tokugawa period (1603-1868).

BiBlical StudieS

This volume examines the relationship between rabbinic and Christian exegetical writings on the book of Genesis in the Eastern Roman Empire and Mesopotamia, and illuminates the history of relations between Jews and Christians in Late Antiquity.

In Simeon the Righteous in Rabbinic Literature: A Legend Reinvented, Amram Tropper investigates the rabbinic traditions about Simeon the Righteous, a renowned Jewish leader of Second Temple times, and the history of their formation.

This is the first English commentary on Josephus Against Apion, his apologetic treatise which rebuts Egyptian and Hellenistic slurs on the Judean people. Accompanied by a new translation, the commentary provides full analysis of the historical, literary, and rhetorical features of the treatise.

Childrens Bibles are often the first encounter people have with the Bible, shaping their perceptions of its stories and characters at an early age. The material under discussion in this book not only includes traditional childrens Bibles but also more recent phenomena such as manga Bibles and animated films for children.

With characteristic boldness and a creative look at long-neglected evidence, MacDonald offers an alternative reconstruction of Q and an alternative solution to the Synoptic Problem: the Q+/Papias Hypothesis.

In Contested Issues in Christian Origins and the New Testament, Luke Timothy Johnson offers a series of independent studies on a range of critical questions from the historical Jesus to sexuality and law.

Water and Roman Urbanism provides an innovative archaeological perspective on the Roman urban experience in Britain through its focus on the cultural implications of the crucial relationship between water and settlement and the important development of this relationship over time.

Following an overview of their broader tradition, this book analyses in detail the commentaries on Statius Thebaid published in the 16th-17th c., with a focus on their interaction with the poem and on the various kinds of exegetical discourse they present.

This study demonstrates that Augustines De cura pro mortuis gerenda forms a well-composed unity of narrative and argument. It combines an analysis of the argumentative structure with a philological commentary, situating the text in its culturalhistorical context.

Logic and Language in the Middle Ages

Edited by Jakob Leth Fink, heine hansen and Ana Mara MoraMrquez

A Volume in Honour of Sten Ebbesen

Kaleidoscope: F.M. Dostoevsky and the Early Dialectical Theology

Katya Tolstaya

History

In this book Ashby Kinch argues that late medieval artists, writers, and patrons creatively adapted conventional death iconography in ways that ultimately affirm theiir artistic, social and political identities.

This volume honours Sten Ebbesen with a series of essays on logical and linguistic analysis in the Middle Ages. Included are studies focusing on textual criticism, new finds of logical texts, and philosophical analysis and interpretation.

Theological hermeneutics receives a new impulse in this book through critical investigation of F.M. Dostoevskys personal faith in its correlation both to his literary oeuvre and to its reception by the two main representatives of dialectical theology, K. Barth and E. Thurneysen.

The Old Bridge of Mostar and Increasing Respect for Cultural Property in Armed Conflict
Jadranka Petrovic

Although it is precious to all humanity, including future generations, cultural property is targeted wilfully during armed conflict. In the litany of other war crimes the wilful destruction of cultural property is pushed from centre stage. The deliberate destruction of the Old Bridge of Mostar is emblematic of tragedies wrought on priceless cultural objects internationally. Drawing on the relevant rules of international humanitarian law and the jurisprudence of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, this book analyses the normative implications of the deliberate targeting and destruction of the Old Bridge and also examines enforcement efforts in order to identify issues relating to international legal protection of cultural property arising from this incident.

Perception and Cognition in Language and Culture

Every language has a way of talking about seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. In about a quarter of the worlds languages, grammatical evidentials express means of perception. In some languages verbs of vision subsume cognitive meanings. In others, cognition is associated with a verb of auditory perception, touch, or smell. Vision is not the universally preferred means of perception. In numerous cultures, taboos are associated with forbidden visual experience. Vision may be considered intrusive and aggressive, and linked with power. In contrast, hearing and listening are the main avenues for learning, understanding and knowing. The studies presented in this book set out to explore how these meanings and concepts are expressed in languages of Africa, Oceania, and South America.

Middle Eastern Manuscripts Online 2: The Ottoman Legacy of Levinus Warner

From Leiden University Libraries
Advisors: Jan schmidt, Leiden University, and Arnoud Vrolijk, Leiden University Libraries

This online publication consists of 140 volumes from the Warner Collection, totaling 45,809 pages of Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, and Persian texts. All these manuscripts were acquired by the great scholar Levinus Warner during his stay in Istanbul from 1644 until his death in 1665. This selection from the famous Warner Legacy to the Leiden University Libraries includes one autograph (Codex Orientalis 432), 10 unique manuscripts (Cod. Or. 498; 517; 801; 870; 1088; 1090; 1096; 1110; 1143; 1155; and 1175), and 11 manuscripts with unique parts (Cod. Or. 309; 333; 662; 697; 730; 765; 835; 870; 898; 917; and 923). Several manuscripts once belonged to famous owners; for example, Cod. Or. 1122 originates from the private library of the Ottoman polymath and historian Ktib elebi (d. 1657). The collection also includes several of Warners diaries with research notes in various languages. The restoration of creation offers the perspective through which Calvins heritage is analyzed and made fruitful for contemporary Reformed theology. Restoration through Redemption shows that Calvins theology hinges on Christology, but extends to the whole creation.

In African Theology as Liberating Wisdom; Celebrating Life and Harmony in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botswana, Mari-Anna Pntinen analyses contextual interpretations of the Christian faith in this church. These interpretations draw from the Tswana tradition and liberation in Christ.

The Culture of Authoritarianism in Latvia from 19341940

deniss hanovs and Valdis Traudkalns

Reflecting on the origins and ideological formulas of the European authoritarian regimes in the interwar period, this book provides a deep and fascinating insight into the regional particularities of the authoritarian regime of Karlis Ulmanis in 1930s Latvia.

Drawing heavily on Georgian sources, the author offers readers a unique opportunity to appreciate why the Abkhazians and South Ossetians have seen no alternative to resisting the threats emanating from Tbilisi by refusing to join an independent Georgia.
