A Few Poorly Organized Men

Following the Figure with the Cap

A New Look at the Religious Function of East Javanese temples (14th to 15th Centuries)
Lydia Kieven, University of Frankfurt

p u b l i c at i o n s

The art of storytelling, which has been popular for centuries in the forested Dairi district of North Sumatra, is usually considered an oral tradition. This book presents evidence that written versions of Dairi stories existed before there was contact with European culture.

Nine years of violent conflict between Christians and Muslims in Poso from 1998-2007 elevated a previously little known district in eastern Indonesia to national and global prominence. Drawing on a decade of research, this book provides the first comprehensive history of this violence.

This publication provides a new understanding of the religious function of the East Javanese temples. The study of the cap-figures and their symbolism yields an outstanding contribution to the uniqueness of Majapahit culture.

Research on Chinese religions is a fast expanding and vibrant field. This anthology gathers both classical pieces of scholarship and very recent articles that illustrate the various disciplinary approaches (history, sociology, anthropology, political sciences, arts and literature), theories and themes that are shaping the field today. Topics covered include the Three teachings

Essays on New Testament Interpretation in Honor of Harold W. Attridge

Edited by Andrew B. McGowan, University of Melbourne , and Kent Harold Richards, First United Methodist Church

p u b l i c at i o n s

Jubilees uses the literary genre to raise the issues typical of apocalypsesincluding revelation, angels and demons, judgment, and eschatologybut rejects what the apocalypses typically say about those issues, subverting reader expectations with another view.

This volume offers, for the first time in a single source, English translations of all twenty-six fifteenththirteenth centuries B.C.E. Ahhiyawa texts, a commentary and brief exposition on each texts historical implications, an introductory essay, and a longer essay on Mycenaean-Hittite interconnections.

In honor of his work, this volume seeks to draw many of these methodological threads together. Readers will find discussions of both new and traditional methods of New Testament study, with numerous examples indicating how these approaches work and what insights they yield.

Questioning the Parting of the Ways between Christians and Jews

stphanie e. Binder

p u b l i c at i o n s

In Persecution in 1 Peter, Travis B. Williams offers a comprehensive and detailed socio-historical investigation into the nature of persecution in 1 Peter, situating the epistle against the backdrop of conflict management in firstcentury CE Asia Minor.

This volume contains the proceedings of an international conference on Solomon that was held at the University of Leuven in 2009 and discussed various aspects of this multifaced character as he appears in Jewish, early Christian, and Islamic tradition.

This work compares two third century texts on idolatry: Tertullians De Idolatria and the rabbinic Mishnah Avodah Zarah, against the background of modern discussions of the parting of the ways between Jews and Christians.

In Trading Communities, Taco Terpstra shows that longdistance trade in the Roman Empire was conducted through foreign trading communities living overseas, held together by ethnic and geographical identity.

Drawing on insights from various disciplines (philology, archaeology, art) as well as from performance and reception studies, this volume shows how a heightened awareness of performance can enhance our appreciation of Greek and Roman theatre.

p u b l i c at i o n s

Printed Pandemonium is a fresh take on one of the most violent political upheavals in early modern history: the riots, political murders and violent purifications of local governments in the Dutch Republic during the so-called Year of Disaster 1672.

This volume seeks to enhance our understanding of printing and the book trade in small and peripheral European cities in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries through a number of specific case studies.

This book offers a unique analysis of visual religion in Reformation England as seen in its religious printed images. Challenging traditional notions of an iconoclastic Reformation, it offers a thorough analysis of the widespread body of printed images and the ways the images gave shape to the religious culture.

A Companion to Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (fl. 960)

Edited by phyllis R. Brown and stephen L. Wailes

Contextual and Interpretive Approaches

p u b l i c at i o n s

In Religion, Technology, and the Great and Little Divergences Karel Davids analyses the influence of religious contexts on technological change in China and Europe between c.700 and 1800.

Psychology and the Other Disciplines looks at how Aristotelian psychology developed from the medieval to the early modern period, by studying its interactions with the other philosophical disciplines, medicine, and theology.

Hrotsvit wrote stories, plays, and histories during the reign of Emperor Otto the Great (962-973). Twelve original essays survey her work, showing historical roots and contexts, Christian values, and a surprisingly modern grappling with questions of identity and female self-realization.

The Law Reports of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (2 vols)
Volume 1: Prosecutor v. Brima, Kamara and Kanu (The AFRC Case)
Edited by Charles C. Jalloh and simon M. Meisenberg

p u b l i c at i o n s

The Special Court for Sierra Leone was established through signature of a bilateral treaty between the United Nations and the Government of Sierra Leone in early 2002, making it the third modern ad hoc international criminal tribunal. The tribunal has tried various persons, including former Liberian President Charles Ghankay Taylor, for allegedly bearing greatest responsibility for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed during the latter half of the Sierra Leonean armed conflict. This volume, which consists of two books and a DVD and is edited by two legal experts on the Sierra Leone court, presents, for the first time in a single place, a comprehensive collection of all the interlocutory decisions and final trial and appeals judgments issued by the court in the case Prosecutor v. Brima, Kamara and Kanu. It contains the full text of all substantive judicial decisions,

including the majority, separate and concurring as well as dissenting opinions. It additionally provides relevant information for a better understanding of the case, such as the indictments, a list of admitted exhibits and a list of documents on the case file. The book, which is only the first in a series of edited law reports that will capture the entire jurisprudential legacy of the tribunal, fills the gap for a single and authoritative reference source of the tribunals jurisprudence. It is intended for national and international judges, lawyers, academics, students and other researchers as well as transitional justice practitioners in courts, tribunals and truth commissions as well as anyone seeking an accurate record of the trials conducted by the Special Court for Sierra Leone. This book examines whether and how legal fisheries instruments encompass a normative consensus on human development, reflected by the indicators of equity, poverty eradication and participation.

For almost three-quarters of a century, the countries of Western Europe have abandoned national sovereignty as an ideal. Nation states are being dismantled: by supranationalism from above, by multiculturalism from below. This book explains why supranationalism and multiculturalism are in fact irreconcilable with representative government and the rule of law.

It includes contributions from some of the worlds leading academics and practitioners. Evidence from Earth Observation Satellites is an edited collection analysing emerging legal issues surrounding the use of satellite data as evidence. It considers whether data from satellite technologies can be a legally reliable, effective evidential tool in contemporary legal systems.

This Lexicon, aimed at NGOs, lawyers, diplomats and students, follows the same method as the Lexicon of Human Rights - Les dfinitions des droits de lhomme, published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers in 2008. Definitions related to the environment are gathered by extracting them from relevant universal scope texts.

Harald Motzki, Radboud University Nijmegen with Nicolet Boekhoff-van der Voort, Radboud University Nijmegen and sean W. Anthony, University of Oregon

The studies collected in this volume show that by careful analysis of the texts and the chains of transmission, the history of Muslim traditions can be reconstructed with a high degree of probability and their historicity assessed afresh.

This volume offers a wideranging account of the Mongols in western and eastern Asia in the aftermath of Genghis Khans disruptive invasions of the early thirteenth century, focusing on the significant cultural, social, religious and political changes that followed in their wake.

The Ottoman Mobilization of Manpower in the First World War examines how the Ottoman Empire tried to cope with the challenges of permanent mobilization and how this process reshaped state-society relations in 1914-1918, focusing mainly on Anatolia and the Muslim population.

Modern Individuality in Hegels Practical Philosophy

erzsbet Rzsa, University of Debrecen

Just War Theory raises some of the most pressing and important philosophical issues of our day. This book brings together some of the most important essays in this area written by leading scholars and offering significant contributions to how we understand just war theory.

Animals and War is the first collection of essays to study its topic. Using sociology, history, anthropology, and cultural studies, it analyzes a wide range of phenomena and exposes the often paradoxical contours of human-animal relationships.

Modern individuality is the not-so-secret protagonist of Hegels practical philosophy. In the framework of spirit, Hegel presents some basic features of the individuals way of life, lifeworld, self-interpreation, and self-determination, which can also be timely in shaping our own personal and social identities.

Handbook of the Theosophical Current

Edited by Olav Hammer and Mikael Rothstein

p u b l i c at i o n s

In David du Plessis and the Assemblies of God Joshua R. Ziefle utilizes the stories of both ecumenical Pentecostal David du Plessis and the Assemblies of God to detail the complicated tensions that arose during the Charismatic Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

In this book experts from various fields analyze the process of transformation of early Christian ethics because of the ongoing interaction with Jewish, GrecoRoman and Christian traditions.

The Brill Handbook of the Theosophical Current represents pioneering research into an important but under-researched current. The three sections in this volume are devoted to the Theosophical Society, Theosophically influenced religious currents, and the interaction between Theosophy and surrounding culture.

Carlos Nelson Coutinho, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Massimiliano Tomba, University of Padua. Translated from the Italian by peter D. Thomas and sara R. Farris

Marxs Temporalities

Reinventing Race, Reinventing Racism provides fresh theoretical insights and policy solutions that address intractable new forms of racism. This accessible book tackles important and timely issues that continue to affect the lives of Americans of all shades and ethnicities.

R e A De R s Hip : All readers

interested in accessible treatments of the intersection of race and public policy in contemporary America; of special interest to those concerned with policy solutions to redress new forms of racism.

In Gramscis Political Thought, Carlos Nelson Coutinho offers an analysis of the evolution of the political thought of Antonio Gramsci. Focusing on central concepts of the Prison Notebooks and relating them to the history of modern political ideas, the book also demonstrates that Gramscis ideas continue to be relevant resources for understanding present times. Re A DeRsHi p: The book offers a critical analysis of the political thought of Antonio Gramsci the author of Letters from Prison.

The book rethinks key categories of Marxs work beyond any philosophy of history, showing how the plurality of temporal layers that are combined and come into conflict in the violently unifying historical dimension of modernity are central to Marxs thought.
