Thankfulness is an action and, if youre doing it right, a habit. Nothing will change your
outlook as fast as being continually thankful. Nearly every evening I amthankful for my soft
bed and at every meal I am thankful for something to eatvery often for something that I
want to eat. A wonderful husband, indoor plumbing, the companionship of three dogs, the
friendship of many cherished souls; these are the things that make a happy life. I am also
thankful that we we ended up in Thomasville. Im thankful for its vibrancy, natural beauty
and civic minded population. Im also thankful for its supportive nature, something Ive
been the recipient of and hopefully a contributor to. And, yes, I am thankful for my many
sponsors, as they make the Townie real and possible and free for all to enjoy. Be thankful my

Looking for some thrilling storytelling to hold your attention this season? We cant
stop talking about author Tana French, whose books revolve around the same cast of
characters from the Dublin Murder Squad, with each novel featuring a minor
character from the previous installment. French begins with In the Woods, followed by
The Likeness (our personal favorite!), a suspense-mystery revolving around a bizarre case
of mistaken identity. Shes continued writing bestsellers with Faithful Place and this years
Broken Harbor. Her mysteries are chilling and smart; theyll keep you up all night
turning pageswhich is the best compliment for any kind of book.

Everyone seems to enjoy Thanksgiving with the possible exception of the turkey.
Family and friends gather to feast, laugh, swap stories and count their blessings.
Turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, savory aromas coming fromthe kitchen; laugh-
ter in the living room and football in the den; its all part of Thanksgiving in America.
For many of us, it has become a season of memories: recalling memories or creating
pleasant new ones for a new generation. Years ago my boyhood home looked like a
Norman Rockwell painting. The extended family gathered at my grandparents
farming homestead for a day of feasting, fun and giving thanks. Aunts, uncles, cousins,
friends, and often a few we didnt know, joined in the raucous celebration.
The women congregated in the kitchen to finish browning the bread and putting other
finishing touches on the meal. My grandmother had already spent the morning
supervising the daughters-in-law in making the dressing. Those women are to be
congratulated for holding their tongues while submitting to her directives. It was just
part of the yearly tradition.
I usually slipped away from my cousins and joined my father and salty old uncles in
the living room for man talk and football. The usual comments were made about
coaches, referees and the players. There was coarse language and funny jokes about
forbidden subjects. A boy can learn a lot from listening to his uncles.
We werent a particularly religious family, but we always took time before the meal to
have a prayer of thanks and ask Gods blessing upon us. Somehow we understood that
we had not made it through the year by ourselves. Some of those years had been pretty
lean. It is a farmers nature to complain. It is also a farmers nature to stand up to
adversity, dig a hole in the dirt and plant seed for another year. As I said, a boy can learn
a lot from his uncles.
Now, it is my turn to lead the family in giving thanks. Whatever I may say during the
Thanksgiving grace, sometime in the day, Ill say, Thank you, to family members no
longer with me. I shall thank them for a resilience of spirit, optimism in spite of the
odds, the gift of laughter and ribald wit. Most of all I shall be grateful for the knowl-
edge that none of us got this far by ourselves.
