Science Form 2 : Set 2 Student Manual Learning Area : 5.0 Water and solution Learning Objective : 5.

4 Solution and Solubility Aim : To determine the factors affecting the rate of dissolving solute Assigment Sample : Task Report Element 1 : C1, C3, C5, C6, C7, C8, C9, C11 Element 3 : C17 INSTRUCTIONS : 1. Conduct activity. 2. Make observation, collect, analysis and interpret data. 3. Write a task report. TASK REPORT FORMAT : 1. Title : Solution and Solubility 2. Aim : To study the relationship between volume of water and the rate of dissolving salts in water. 3. Variables : i) Manipulated : ii) Responding : iii) Fixed/Constant : 4. Apparatus/Materials : .. 5. Procedure : a.Beaker A is filled with 50ml of water, beaker B is filled with 100ml of water and beaker C is filled with 200ml of water. b. Water is at room temperature. c. 10g of salts is weighed with a beam balance and added to each beaker. d. The solution in each beaker is stirred at the same rate until all the salts dissolved completely. e. Time taken for salts to dissolve is recorded for each beaker.

6. Observation. Communicating. (record your reading in table form) Based on the date collected , also draw a line graph to show the effect of different volumes of water on the time taken to dissolve salts. Measuring and using numbers. ( table showing correct measurement and units.) Observation: Answer the following questions. 1. From your observation, can salts grains still be seen after all salts is completely dissolves in water? 2. Which volume of water dissolves the salts : i) First : . ii) Last : . 7. Discussion and analysis : Answer the questions given. Based on the experimental data. 1. Which volume of water dissolves the salts the salts : i) the fastest : ii) the slowest : . 2. Salts dissolves in water. What is the solute and solvent.Complete the word equation to represent the formation of salts solution.

3. State the relationships between the volume of water and the time taken to dissolve salts in water. 4. Based on table, define operationally the rate of dissolving salt 5. Based on table of results, what will happen to the time taken to dissolve salt when more than 200 ml of water is used? 6. Based on the graph, predict the time taken to dissolve salt if 150 ml of water is used. 8. Conclusion: 1. What can be said about the time taken to dissolves salts and the volume of water. SCIENCE FORM 2 SET 2 TEACHERS MANUAL 1. Learning Objective : Solution and Solubilty 2. Aim : To study the effect of different volumes of water on the rate of dissolving salt. 3. Variables : a) Manipulated : Volume of water b) Responding : Time taken to dissolve the salt c) Fixed/ Constant : Mass of salt/ temperature of water/rate of stirring/ type of salt 4. Apparatus/ Materials : Beam balance, stopwatch, 3 beakers (250 ml), fine salts, glass rod, measuring cylinder. 5. Procedure : a.Beaker A is filled with 50ml of water, beaker B is filled with 100 ml of water and beaker C is filled with 200 ml of water. b. Water is at room temperature. c. 10g of salts is weighed with a beam balance and added to each beaker. d. The solution in each beaker is stirred at the same rate until all the salts dissolved completely. e. Time taken for salts to dissolve is recorded for each beaker.

6.0 Observation: Table of results : Mass of salt = 10 gram

Beaker Volume of water (ml) Time taken to dissolve ( second)

A B C

50 100 150 200

110 55 40 35

6.1 The salt grains cannot be seen anymore when all the salt is completely dissolved 6.2 (i) 200 ml of water in beaker C dissolves salts first (ii) 50 ml of water in beaker A dissolves salt last.

7.0 Discussion and Analysis: 7.1 (i) 200 ml of water in beaker C dissolves salts the fastest because it has the largest volume of water (ii) 50 ml of water in beaker A dissolves salt the slowest because it has the lowest volume of water. 7.2 Salt dissolves in water to form salt solution. In word equation:
SALT SOLUTE WATER SOLVENT SALT SOLUTION

7.3 The larger the volume of water, the less time taken to dissolve salt/ As the volume of water increases, the time taken to dissolve salt decreases 7.4 i) Rate of dissolving salt is the time taken to dissolve all (10 g) salt completely in Water ii)Varies with/ depends on volume of water iii)Reading of stop watch 8.0 Conclusion : 8.1 Time taken to dissolve salts depends on the volume of water / Time taken to dissolve salt is affected by the volume of water.
