Design Technology Criterion A Original Design Problem Text: Achievement within our culture and the school community

is recognized in a number of different ways. One of these ways that is popular within our culture is the awarding of medals. Medals usually take a specific form (circular like the example below). Can these be redesigned to make their form more interesting and relevant to the awarded subject? Design Problem in my own words: In our school community, achievements in cultures are recognized in different ways. Medals are a popular award within our school community. These medals are usually in a circular shape. Can we have a redesigned version of these so that they can display a more interesting shape, be more relevant to the awarded subject and also more specifically about the awarded subject. Design Brief: To solve the problem, I will redesign a medal in shape, color and size. It will be a more interesting shape and the shape, color and size will be in a way which is relevant to the awarded subject. Medal Brainstorm:

Inquiry Problems in order of importance What is melting point of Pewter? What are the safety precautions of using the different machines (example, scroll saw, laser cutter, sand machine, drill press) How to represent the awarded subject in the medal? How to do you use the laser cutter? What are some of the subjects we can give medals for Who is this medal targeted to How thin can acrylic become What are some contrasting colors that we can use on our medal What is Pewter Casting How to Cast Pewter Answer to Inquiry Questions: Inquiry Problems in order of importance What is melting point of Pewter? What are the safety precautions of using the different machines (example, scroll saw, laser cutter, sand machine, drill press)

How I will find the answer to these questions Internet research Look through books or get explanations from the teacher Talk with other students about Nist related symbols that can be showed on the medal Find out from an expert House Reps Look at Criterion Internet Research (Information may vary due to resources we have) Color Wheel, Internet, Art Room Internet Internet

Answer 170240 C - Wear Eye Protection all the time - Keep Work Area Clean - Make Adjustments to the machine only when it is turned of and unplugged - Keep Body Parts out of the way of the blade - If the user has long hair they must tie it back - Make sure there is lots of light in the working space to reduce chance of an accident - If the sound is loud use hearing protection - Make sure the dust is controlled with a filter system or wear a mask - Concentrate when using the equipment - Equipment can be hot so have temperature in control - Do not leave a machine on when you or someone else is not using it - If you feel distracted stop using the machine immediately

How to represent the awarded subject in the medal? How to do you use the laser cutter? What are some of the subjects we can give medals for Who is this medal targeted to How thin can acrylic become What are some contrasting colors that we can use on our medal

Make Sure the Machine is Operating Properly before starting to use it Most Caring Its needs to be controlled from a computer

Question Design of any logo on the Medal (Does it Clearly Indicate who or what the medal is for?)

Medal

Answer This medal has a logo. It does not indicate who it is for, but there is a statement about the medal, that says Honoring Outstanding Albertans Which state that this medal honors outstanding albertans

What material do you think it is made from

I think it is made of a sort of medal, but I do not think it is a rare or valuable one. I just think it is stainless Steel

The colors and shapes and textures used (does the shape indicate the subject/sport it is awarded for?) If it gives some mention or indication where it has been awarded from?

The shape and color does not indicate what it is rewarded for in any way. It uses the normal round shape and the shiny bronze color. It has no references to the subject it is awarded for

It gives no indication or mention of where it has been awarded from

Based on its looks Would you be proud to receive such an award

Based on its looks I would be proud to receive such an award. It looks nice and has meaning although there is not much mention or information on it

Question Design of any logo on the medal (does it clearly indicate who or what the medal is for?) What material you think is it made from

Medal

Answer This medal has no indication for what it is for, but there is a number 1 on it so I assume this is a first place medal I think this medal is made of a nonrare metal,, maybe steel

The colors and shapes and textures used (does the shape indicate the subject/sport it is awarded for?)

The shape does not indicate what it is awarded for as it is the normal circular shape

If it gives some mention or indication where it has been awarded from?

There is no mention or indication of where it has been awarded from

Based on its looks Would you be proud to receive such an award

Based on its looks I would not be proud to receive this medal as an award because of its plain and boring look that looks like someone has not put a lot of work into and that it was a waste of time and material to even make it

Awarded to: The Most Caring Person What does it Mean to be Caring: Aware of the others needs To Listen to Others

To understand others To be able to accept others To be able to work with others To take interest in someone or something or anything and try to the best of your ability to make sure they are in a good condition To show concern towards others To interact with others and make them feel safe

Caring about our world and environment and everything in it. This picture definitely shows care as it was the first word that came into my mind when I saw this picture. I has a deep meaning of concern for something which is the definition of care

This Picture shows the phrase caring for our neighbours. On a different scale it means caring for the people around us, it has bright colours saying that if everybody cares everybody is happy

It shows Human Interaction as the words says. It directly shows care as the kid on the hospital bed is receiving care.

Shaking hands addresses the word caring in a way that people are accepting each other and able to understand each other

There are many ways I can show caring in my medal, but only some ways can be very effective and have a strong message that the person who got awarded is a truly caring person Bibliography:
