Impact of Food Technology on the Economy of Pakistan

Food Technology:
Food technology is the science of the application of Physics, Chemistry, Micro-biology and Engineering on the foods for their better and good quality production and their increment in shelf-life for long period usage. Food technology has brought about a revolutionary change and made it possible for the un-seasonal food commodities to be used all the year round. Food industries also contribute in the stabilization of the countrys economy by exporting the food commodities around the globe. There are numerous food industries that have emerged as a result of the development of food science & technology ranging from cottage to various large scale enterprises and engages a large number of labour thus becoming a source of employment in the country. Therefore the importance of food science and technology cannot be denied as it plays a major role in the development of the economy of any country.

Due to the advancements in the food science & technology and industrial revolution, a large number of food industries have been set up in Pakistan and are engaged in the quality food production and are contributing their side for the economic stabilization and have brought enormous economic gains to the general public and the government. Due to the huge and good quality food production by different food processing and preservation units in Pakistan, they are also able to earn foreign exchange by the export of food commodities e.g. fish, kinnow, mango, dry fruits and many other processed food products, which as a result strengthen the economy of Pakistan.

By the installation of many different food industries, they have become a source of employment for a large number of people and thus food industry ranks as second major industry to engage a large number of labour and has helped to reduce un-employment in the country.

Introduction or Establishment of Allied Industries

Many other allied industries producing ingredients, equipments, packaging material, chemicals etc have been set up which aid to provide raw materials to food processing industries. These allied industries are also a source of employment and indirectly bring economic gains to the country.

By the establishment of such various kinds of food processing and allied industries, they have become a way of revenue collection by the government that makes gains by incorporating direct and indirect taxes and thus government is benefited in such way.

The food processing industries require raw material for their respective production and thus transporters are engaged in this way for the supply of raw food materials to the food industries and their finished products to the consumers. Therefore giving rise to the transport industry and incorporating employment to the people for the fast and safe transport of finished products like frozen meat, milk, fish etc. Hence, food industry has provided enormous economic gains and profits for the country and its role and importance is justified because food industry along with the allied units that provide raw material to them and thus a whole chain of industries have been connected with one another providing employment to the people and tax to the government.
