Were grateful you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Our hope is that our worship will be an encouragement to you and that youll have an opportunity to return soon. We desire Christ Pres to be a place where anyone from the long-time churchgoer to those entirely unfamiliar with church or Christianity is made to feel welcome. So regardless of where you are on that spectrum were glad youre here with us. Please give us an opportunity for us to introduce ourselves to you and get to know you a bit by staying around after the service and visiting with us. We also invite you to take one of the free books offered on our book table at the back of the gym. They are provided to help you learn more about our church. Also, we would love to have a record of your attendance with us, so please take a few moments to fill out the visitor card at the back of your bulletin and drop it in the offering plate when it comes by. The City In order to communicate as a church we use an online platform called The City. We use it to share prayer requests, organize events, and share interesting things weve been learning or reading. If youre interested in knowing more about our church, we encourage you to sign up and take a look around. Go to www.cpc.onthecity.org/kiosk to get started. Kids We believe kids are a part of the church, too. We encourage parents to keep their kids in the worship service to help them become familiar with the sights and sounds of worshiping God together with all Gods people. We understand that there may be fussing, crying, and trips to the bathroom. Thats okay. Weve all experienced that blessed struggle! If you need to get up and excuse yourself out the lobby, thats just fine.
We also know that can be difficult for small kids, so we also have a nursery across the hallway in Room A for kids 0-5. All nursery workers have been screened and trained by Ministry Safe (www.ministrysafe.com). Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns with the nursery.

Liturgy We realize that our liturgy (aka, order of service) may be unfamiliar to some. Every church everywhere has an order of service, and we desire to be thoughtful and intentional with ours. We also desire to show our connection with Christians from all ages and places. So weve designed it in such a way to reflect the back-and-forth conversation between God and us we believe worship to be. We encourage you to take a few minutes before worship to look over the bulletin so that you can know what to expect. Weve provided short explanations throughout to help.

High Beyond Imagination

Taken from the Gadsby Hymnal # 582 Words William Gadsby, 1838. Music Benj Pocta, 2006.

High beyond imagination Is the love of God to man. Far too deep for human reason Fathom that it never can. Love eternal, Richly dwells in Christ the lamb. Love like Jesus' none can measure, Nor can its dimensions know; 'Tis a boundless, endless river, And its waters freely flow. O ye thirsty, Come and taste its streams below. Jesus loved, and loves for ever; Zion on His heart does dwell; He will never, never, never Leave His church a prey to hell. All is settled And my soul approves it well

God Cleanses Us

Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. (Isaiah 1:18)

Confession of Sin

Anger

Merciful Father, you have been kind, gentle, and patient with us despite all the ways we have wronged you. But we often fail to show that same attitude toward those who wrong us. We have murdered others with our anger. We have torn others down with our words and our thoughts. We have not pursued reconciliation with those whom we have wronged. We have nursed grudges, delayed confession and repentance, and harbored bitterness in our hearts. In so doing, we have not lived in step with the gospel we love and profess. Father, forgive us for our anger through our Lord Jesus Christ. Renew us, making us quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to be angry. Glorify yourself through our transformed hearts and lives. Amen.

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon

2 Corinthians 5:21

For our sake he make him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Sermon

Rev. Bryce Waller

Hope for the Angry

Matthew 5:21-26 Part of the Preaching Series: The Kings Speech Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount
21

You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, You fool! will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Sermon Notes:

Celebration of the Lords Supper

A Word About Communion at CPC

The Lords Supper (or Communion or the Eucharist) is a time of great celebration and joy for Gods people. It is one of the important means God uses to grow us in our love for Him and for each other. Through simple and ordinary things like bread and wine, God confirms His promises in a visible and tangible way to those who have placed their trust in Jesus Christ. We invite all those who have trusted in Christ for salvation, belong to a church that believes the gospel, are living at peace with others, and who are earnestly seeking to continue to turn from their sins to partake with us. Children who have been baptized and who have been received as members by the Session (elders) of this church or another gospel-believing church may also partake. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer and to consider more deeply your relationship to Jesus Christ.

An Invitation to the Lords Table and Prayer

The Great Thanksgiving Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Minister: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks, praising Him and saying: All: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Glory be to You, O Lord Most High.

Words of Institution

1 Corinthians 11:2326

For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lords death until he comes.

The Lords Supper When you are ready, please come to the front and form a line in front of the communion table. Please take the bread and wine and return to your seat and we will all partake together. Please use our communion time to sing the following hymns and reflect on the work of Christ for you.

Prayers for Those Not Communing For those searching for truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me the ability to follow you no matter what it might cost me. Give me an understanding for you that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the life that you promise. Amen. For those who desire to profess faith in Christ: Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful that I ever believed, but through you, I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead and are now representing me at the Fathers right hand in heaven, I turn from my sins and receive you as my savior. Amen. A prayer for those struggling against sin: Lord Jesus, give me the ability to see in you the fulfillment of all my needs and desires, and help me to turn from every false source of satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely to me, and run with perseverance the race that you have set before me, looking only to you, the author and perfector of my faith. Amen. A prayer for covenant children who have not yet made a profession of faith: Lord Jesus, thank you for giving me the opportunity to grow up in a Christian family where I am surrounded by the good news of the gospel. Help me to grow in my understanding of who you are and what you have done for me on the cross. Help me learn what it means for me to turn from my sins and trust in you alone for my salvation. Teach me what it means to follow you as one of your disciples. Amen.

Communion Song The Love of God

By Frederick M. Lehman Public Domain

The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell; it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win; His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin. When years of time shall pass away, and earthly thrones and kingdoms fall; When men who here refuse to pray, on rocks and hills and mountains call; God's love, so sure, shall endure, all measureless and strong; redeeming grace to Adam's race, the saints' and angels' song. Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made; were ev'ry stalk on earth a quill, and ev'ry man a scribe by trade; to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.

Offering and Closing Song The Sands of Time Are Sinking

Words: Anne Cousin (based on Samuel Rutherfords letters) Music:traditional folk tune (arr. Phillip Palmertree)

The sands of time are sinking, The dawn of heaven breaks; The summer morn Ive sighed for The fair, sweet morn awakes: Dark, dark had been the midnight But dayspring is at hand, And glory, glory dwelleth In Emmanuels land. The king there in His beauty, Without a veil is seen: It were a well-spent journey, Though seven deaths lay between: The Lamb with His fair army, Doth on Mount Zion stand, And glory, glory dwelleth In Emmanuels land O Christ, He is the fountain, The deep, sweet well of love! The streams on earth Ive tasted More deep Ill drink above: There to an ocean fullness His mercy doth expand, And glory, glory dwelleth In Emmanuels land. The bride eyes not her garment, But her dear Bridegrooms face; I will not gaze at glory But on my King of grace. Not at the crown He giveth But on His pierced hand; The Lamb is all the glory Of Emmanuels land.

God Blesses Us

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

*Benediction

Jude 1:2425

Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Congregation: Thanks be to God!

Questions for Reflection and Discussion1 Catechism Corner New City Catechism Q. What does God require in the sixthcommandment? A. That we do not hurt, hate, or be hostile to our neighbor, but be patient and peaceful, pursuing even our enemies with love.

1. How have you experienced anger in your own life? In yourself? In others? What are the things that make you most angry? Why do you think that is? 2. How does Jesus address the problem of anger here? How is that different from the way we often think of it? 3. How would your life look different if you applied this passage to your life? Are there relationships you need to reconcile? Do you need to reconcile with God? 4. How does Gods grace in the gospel help us deal with our anger? How does God treat us when our sins anger him?

Use these questions, prayer requests, and reflections on Christian teaching throughout the week to help internalize this weeks sermon. Read them over dinner with your family, talk about them over coffee with a friend, or just read them individually.
