The Federal Housing Administration created this type of mortgage in 1989. It is intended for people in their retirement years. In fact, one requirement is Wellsville 3494 Andover Rd. 585-593-4063 low mortgage balance that could be paid off with proceeds from the reverse mortgage. You must also reside in the home and pay all property taxes and insurance. No monthly payments are due on the loan; therefore, no income or credit scores are required. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) requires that all applicants receive independent counseling from a third party. A certificate of completion is required, which is submitted to the lender. Payments can be made on the loan, but they are not necessary. The reverse mortgage is due when the borrower dies or no longer lives in the residence. The borrowers heirs pay back the loan and interest. They have 12 months to either sell the house and pay back the loan or refinance. If the loan is not repaid, the lender can foreclose on the property. If funds from foreclosure

SPAGHETTI SAUCE FOR 2 I make homemade spaghetti sauce. I freeze it in tall plastic containers that hold just enough for the two of us. I put these in the freezer until frozen solid (usually overnight). The next day I carefully remove the frozen sauce. I usually make these three at a time. All three can fit into a gallon-size freezer bag. It saves on containers and also it is just enough for one meal for the two of us with no leftovers. -Lilly P. PREPACKAGED LUNCHES Just wanted to share my meal/lunch idea. I buy Chinese takeaway boxes (500ml) from a catering supply shop. As soon as we finish dinner, we pack the leftovers up and freeze them. Most meals I cook feed three adults for mains and between two to four lunchboxes. This saves so much money, and its a lucky dip in the freezer for lunch, which never gets boring. Because my family tends to not bring plastic containers home for a few days, I justify the expense of the containers (approximately 20 cents each). By then, the containers are nasty. I also think that the plastic can hold some bacteria when constantly being reheated. -Katie B. FREE MOVIES I love to watch movies, but rental can be pricey. And my local

Melanie Johnston, President. 4/19f STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver It was 20th-century American humorist Evan Esar who made the following extremely sage observation: Anger is the feeling that makes your mouth work faster than your mind. The Ghirardelli company, now renowned worldwide for the fine chocolate it produces, originally was a purveyor of mustard and spices. Unless youre employed in the publishing field, you might think that a typographical error is rather insignificant, something that only nitpickers worry about. Typos, however, sometimes radically change the meaning of text. Take, for example, the 1631 edition of the Bible published by the royal printers in London. A word was left out of one of the Ten Commandments, resulting in the exhortation, Thou shalt commit adultery. This book is now known as the Wicked Bible or the Adulterous Bible. Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, the publishers responsible for the error, were fined 300 British pounds, or about $54,000 in todays currency.

Because it seals so well, the bread stays fresh much longer! -Diane L. YOUNGER SKIN FOREVER Several years ago, I was given this tip from a woman in her sixties whose skin looked years younger. She told me that she used baking soda to exfoliate her skin. Ever since then, I have been using it, and it works wonders. I mix about a tablespoon in with my facial cleanser and gently rub on my face, neck, hands, etc. I am careful to avoid my eyes. It is amazing how smooth my skin looks and feels. -Barb in TX

My wife and I grew up on farms. We bought an existing farm and wanted to explore some new and innovative ideas we had. Our lender was unfamiliar with some of the opportunities we were considering and suggested we call FarmNet. We met with a FarmNet consultant and worked

together to conduct a feasibility study of our business options. Based on that study we selected a direction and created a business plan to make it happen. Now we have a value added product that we can direct market to local grocery stores in our area. Thanks FarmNet!

Blue Mist Shrub (Caryopteris)- This late summer bloomer likes to be pruned in the spring. Cut it back 6-8 or by half its size. Caryopteris blooms on new growth. They are slow to begin growth in the spring, so dont give up on those seemingly bare twigs. Gayfeather (Liatris spicata)- Gorgeous spikes of flowers make this a desirable plant. Allow the flower spikes to remain as seed for birds during the winter and prune back the old stalks in the spring. Italian Bugloss (Anchusa azurea)- Right after flowering these plants are sheared and should then be left to grow the rest of the summer and pruned the following spring. Lavender- Cold affects lavender and makes over-wintering a tricky business. Dont prune late in the season. New growth will be killed by winter temperatures. In the spring, prune out any winter die back. Pincushion Flower (Scabiosa)- This is another plant that, if you remove all the foliage, you may not know where it is come spring. Leave the old foliage or a marker and prune old growth in the spring after the plant begins active growth. Russian Sage- Russian sage adds contrast with whitish stems and silver leaves. It is a plant that is sensitive to the cold, so leave the foliage in the fall. In the spring, when new growth starts, prune back to about 6-8. Remove any dead woody sections. Sedum- If you left your sedum for winter interest, you need to prune out the dead foliage come spring. Turtlehead- Have you found it hard to over-winter your turtleheads? Try leaving the foliage and pruning the old growth in the spring. If you refrain from pruning certain perennial flowers in the fall (under healthy conditions), whether for winter interest, bird food or the health of the plant, you can make your flower beds a year-round source of pleasure. fb

Whatever youre looking for, odds are you can find it in the Moneysaver! PRUNING PERENNIALS IN THE SPRING By: Colleen Cavagna, Cornell Cooperative Extension Community Educator Every fall we talk about cleaning up the flower beds in preparation for winter. This is done to discourage insects and diseases from overwintering in the beds. If you arent experiencing pest or disease problems, some of your perennial flowers actually like to be left alone until spring time. Here are a few that can be pruned in spring: Artemisia- Most Artemisia should be pruned in the spring, if pruned in the fall, new growth will be too tender and will be killed by winter temperatures. Balloon Flower (Platycodon)- If you have grown this striking flower, you dont want to make the mistake of digging it up in the spring. Leave some type of foliage or a marker where it is growing since it comes up late in the spring and you dont want to disturb it by mistake. Prune old growth once new growth has started. Basket-of-Gold (Aurinia saxatilis)- Yellow/gold flowers make this plant stunning and its foliage can also provide some green color during mild winters. If seeing green amidst all that white is important to you, try leaving this until spring pruning. Black-eyed Susan- Leaving the flower stalks for birds to feed on throughout the winter is a wonderful practice. Just clean up and prune in the spring.

What do you see? A friend told me a story about listening to life with his grandson. They sat together, eating M&Ms. After a handful or so, the little guy started staring at one of the candies. What do you see? the grandfather asked. Well, I see an M, the boy said. He turned the candy slowly around about a quarter of a turn. Now I see a 3, he said, and turned the candy again. And theres a W, he said, turning the candy. And look! Theres an E, he told his grandfather. And thats all, he said, and popped the candy in his mouth. Amazing, isnt it, what you can see when you just change your perspective a little bit. As little as a quarter turn in your viewpoint can open up a whole new world for you, cant it? Whatever youre looking at in your life, turn it over and see it from an unfamiliar perspective. Discover a whole new way to live positive!

MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Parents and Community Members, As we move into the month of March, we are fast approaching a critical time in our 2012-13 school year. First, NYS testing is about to begin for students in grades 3-8. While a test cannot be the end-all in terms of quantifying student learning, it does provide us an opportunity to assess whether or not we have sufficiently taught our students the recently adopted Common Core standards, and whether or not we have our students on the path of college and career readiness. As a parent and an educator, I know, as do you, that education is the key that will open so many doors for our children. Whether a parent, relative, friend, or role model of a student, please actively encourage and support their learning. Secondly, we are in the midst of trying to create a responsible fiscal budget which allows us to provide the very best education for our students, while at the same time being considerate of the needs of the community. Unfortunately, as has been the case for the past several years, at the beginning of this budget process, we were facing an estimated $685,000 deficit. To put this number in perspective, if we were to try and eliminate this deficit solely through an increase in school taxes, we would have to raise the tax levy approximately 25%. Obviously raising school taxes in this amount is not a viable solution, so we are now charged with trying to look at how we are providing our current educational program and determining if there are ways this can be done in a more cost effective manner. Over the next several weeks, we will look at our expenses, revenues, staffing, and programming and then finalize a responsible budget, but one that continues to provide our students with the best educational opportunities possible. As we work our way through the development of the 2013-14 budget, I cannot encourage you enough to be an active participant in this process. If you would like to become more informed about the budget development process, or any school topic for that matter, please know that the public is welcome to attend Board of Education meetings on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Public attendees are permitted to comment on any topic listed on the Board Agenda for a period of 5 minutes, and can even bring up a topic not on the agenda, provided they have notified the District Clerk, Connie Emery, 3 days prior to the meeting. Please know your attendance and participation is encouraged, appreciated, and respected. If you are unable to attend an upcoming Board of Education meeting, please know that we will be holding special public meetings to disseminate information about the impending budget and to listen to your feedback and answer your questions. Or if you feel more comfortable, please call me at school, call me at home, stop me on the street, and ask me a question. I will always do my best to listen, and if requested, answer your questions. As I have stated before, it is an honor to be able to serve the children of this school district and people of this community. Together we will not only continue on with, but enhance the proud traditions of this school system. Yours in Education,

communication and people skills that allow them to succeed in the workplace and life in general. These skills are just as important as subject knowledge, so I promise to always stress that. Testing is always an important issue. Your students teachers have been working hard to get them ready for the state tests. We want your students to take pride in the tests because it reflects very well on the school when they do well, and it lets them know how they are doing on the skills that the state expects them to master. Please keep these dates in mind for this years English Language Arts (ELA) and Math tests for grade 3 through 8: ELA - April 16-18; Math - April 24-26. The 8th grade science lab assessment will take place in late May and the science written test will be on June 3rd. High school Regents exams are scheduled for June 12-20. Another thing we are working on this year includes adapting to the states new teacher evaluation system for teachers and administrators. There is a lot of paperwork and time that can take away from teacher-student time, so we are working on making the teacher evaluation system more efficient. So far, we have been able to make some very good progress on getting evaluations done in a timely and efficient manner so we can concentrate on your kids. Teacher evaluation does play a vital role state-wide in making sure that our teachers are doing a good job. I can assure you from what I have seen so far that our teachers are working very hard to help each of their students. I have been very impressed with our staff in my short time here. Feel free to stop in any time and say hello. If you have suggestions or concerns, please go to the high school web page at www.brcs.wnyric.org and click on the Principals Message page. I have a suggestions/concerns link on the page in case you want to bring anything to my attention.

ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS NEWS

Dear Parents/Guardians, Many times educators are asked by parents, What can I do at home to help my child be successful at school? The answer to this is quite simple, Read with your child every day! Throughout the reading process, praise your child, ask questions about the story, visualize the story, offer information, share personal feelings, and relate the story to real life. Most of all enjoy the story together and let your child see that reading is fun. This is a special time together! March has brought us a Seuss Celebration here at BRCS Elementary for Read Across America week! Thursday, February 28th, we had our kick-off celebration with a special reading of Green Eggs and Ham by our Superintendent John Marshall. The students really enjoyed this! March 4th- 8th we had many fun activities celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The students had celebrity readers in their classrooms, crazy sock day, crazy hair day, wacky outfit, dress as your favorite Seuss character and pajama day! On March 7th we had Family Fun Night from 6-7:30 here at the elementary school in the cafeteria. This night was filled with literacy themed crafts, reading and snacks. Thank you for attending! Some important upcoming dates to remember: March 29th-April 5th: No school for Spring Break April 15th- Report Cards come home April 16th-18th: ELA State Tests April 24th-26th: Math State Tests On a final note, as many of you know, our education system as we know it is undergoing some major changes. One major change is the implementation of the Common Core State Standards for grades Pre-K through 12th grade in ELA and Math. The standards will help all students across the State learn the same skills. This will make sure that they are ready for college and careers. For more information on the Common Core Standards, please click the link below for helpful parent and family resources: http://engageny.org/parent-and-family-resources. Parent communication is crucial to student success! Feel free to contact the school with any questions or concerns at 1-585-928-2882. Sincerely,

John R. Marshall Superintendent of Schools

HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS NEWS

Dear Students, Families and Community Members: In December of last year, I was selected as your new Secondary principal. I could not be happier with the new job because of the great staff at BRCS, and most of all for the wonderful students. I have worked in several schools over my career, and BRCS kids are by far the best behaved and most respectful students I have worked with. I live in Olean with my wife Sue, who is a second grade teacher at Portville. We have two children, Sarah (24) and Jake (22). I am the former assistant principal at the Olean Middle School, and I recently worked at Pioneer High School in a four month position, covering for a maternity leave. Olean closed two schools at the end of June, which is why I needed to search for other employment. Losing a job is always stressful, but I was extremely fortunate to end up at BRCS. I entered the education field at the tender age of 38, which is later than most people. My experience as a business owner, teacher, administrator and parent allows me to communicate effectively with students about their future and the challenges they will face. My major goal this year as your new principal is to get to know each and every student. Memorizing names is important to me because I want every kid to know that I care about them. That job is tough, but Ill keep working on it. I was a retailer for close to fifteen years, and many of the people skills that I used to work with customers will work in all school situations. I will always do my best to treat kids with respect. If I do that, chances are they will return the favor. I want students to graduate from BRCS with the

TECHNOLOGY 8
The students in the Technology 8 class just finished a unit on bridge building. You may be asking, Why have I not seen a bridge? Students design, build and test their bridges. As a result, there is not much left of the bridge when the testing phase is over. Most of the bridges weigh between 3 and 10 ounces. The average weight held by this years 8th grade was 245 pounds. A few bridges held over 500 pounds with one maxing out at 540 pounds. Not bad for an 8.354 ounce bridge. Students learn engineering design and get to observe forces that act on bridges as they break. Some of the forces we study in the bridge building unit are tension, compression, torsion, and shear. Students also learn about different types of joinery when building their bridge. Students assess how efficient their bridge was using a mathematical formula. This was a great unit, and I think our students had a great time completing it.

DDP
The DDP class just finished a unit on auto safety and engineering. Students designed cars that had to protect an egg as it went down our track. Students researched, designed, and drew mechanical drawings for their car design. Students then produced a vehicle to protect the egg. Part of the fun with this project is making a mess. As the angle of incline on our track was raised, each egg eventually cracked. We studied Newtons laws of motion and automobile safety and were able to observe these principles when testing our cars.

WOLVERINES AFRICA?
By Mr. Emery Kids living in an orphanage in a far off land of Malawi, in Central Africa, are a little happier today that they are able to use a set of retired Wolverine girls basketball uniforms. It is so nice to know that with the help of Reverend Herne, we were able to get a little more use out of uniforms that we had retired as surplus this past year. Helping an orphanage across the world is just another way the Wolverines show they care.

MARCH & APRIL 2013 HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE NEWS

Mrs. Crandall-Bean, High School Counselor SAT REVIEW CLASS OFFERED AT JCC JUNIORS PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TEST PREP OPPORTUNITY! BRCS will not be offering an onsite SAT prep course this spring. Therefore, college bound juniors are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity in order to prepare for the May and/or June SAT test sessions.

MARCH 12, 2013

To the left on this screen you will see links for internal/local scholarships as well as a link to external/national scholarships. There you will find a large amount of scholarship information as well as the actual scholarship applications along with the deadlines. Seniors are encouraged to get an early start on completing scholarship applications as often they involve writing essays, attaching transcripts, letters of recommendations and or essays. Please call or stop into the Guidance Office if you need assistance with scholarships! ATTENTION JUNIORS: NATIONAL COLLEGE FAIR TO BE HELD IN BUFFALO The National College Fair will be held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on Tuesday, March 26th, 2013 from 9AM - 12PM and 6 - 8:30PM and on Wednesday, March 27th from 9AM - 12PM. About 200 major colleges from all over the United States will be sending representatives to speak with students in grades 10-12. For a complete overview of this college fair go to www.nacacnet.org/ ncfstudent. Students may go to this website to pre-register before attending the event. By pre-registering, students can print a bar coded confirmation sheet to be used as an electronic ID. At the event, students can have a college scan their bar code to get all the students information, eliminating the time and hassle for students to fill out inquiry cards for colleges...a really neat idea! Flyers for this college fair are located in the Guidance Office. 8TH THROUGH 11TH GRADERS TO SELECT COURSES FOR THE 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR During the months of March through May, all 8th through 11th graders will sit down with me to select courses for next school year. Parents are required to sign the student schedule request form to show approval of the courses selected. However, parents are more than welcome to set up an appointment to be present when I schedule your child. Please e-mail me at ccrandall-bean@brcs.wnyric.org or call me at 928-2985 if you have questions or concerns regarding your childs choice of courses for next year. SUMMER SCHOOL GRADING A reminder to parents that according to state regulations schools must combine the school-year average with the summer school average before determining if the student receives credit (passes) the course. Bolivar-Richburgs formula counts the school-year grade 50% and the summer school grade at 50%. For example, a student who fails a course with a 60 during the school year will have to get at least a 70 in summer school to pass the course. A student who fails a course with a 50 during the school year will have to get at least an 80 in summer school to pass the course. We will have a grid available for students/parents that shows exactly what grade a student needs to earn in summer school in order to pass a course. This will be sent to each student who attends summer school. We want students to see how their school-year grade affects summer school. If your child is not passing a course right now, we ask you to encourage him or her to continue to work hard in that class. We do not want students to give up during the school year and bank on passing the course in summer school because now, as you can see, the school-year average greatly affects the summer school average.

PENN YORK COLLEGE NIGHT SCHEDULED- COLLEGE-BOUND JUNIORS SHOULD ATTEND! Penn York College Night, the premier college night in our area, will once again be held at St. Bonaventure University on Monday, March 25th, from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Over one hundred colleges and other educational institutions will be represented this year. Students and parents have the opportunity to speak with college representatives, receive college brochures and financial aid information. I cannot stress how important it is for college-bound students, particularly juniors, to attend this program. Since many of the colleges in attendance will not visit our school during the school year, this may be the only chance to speak with a particular colleges representative. Programs will be available in the high school guidance office and will be handed out to all juniors. FINANCIAL AID REMINDERS FOR SENIORS Seniors have been reminded to be sure that they have filed the correct financial aid applications to the colleges to which they have applied. In addition to all colleges requiring the FAFSA, some colleges have their own application and, more importantly, its very own filing deadline. Students should call their college financial aid department to verify forms and deadlines. We have several good financial aid brochures available for parents in our guidance office or, go to the FAFSA website at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students who are New York State residents who plan on attending a college within New York State are reminded to file your TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) applications to try and qualify for up to $5000 of free grant money toward college at www.tapweb.org. We would be glad to help you with questions regarding financial aid if you would like to call our office at 928-2985. SAT AND ACT DATES FOR COLLEGE-BOUND JUNIORS A few years ago the SAT and ACT tests both added a writing section to their assessments. The SAT includes a required writing section that will consist of multiple choice questions and a 25-minute essay. The ACT also includes a writing section; however, the writing section is optional. If a student takes the ACT without the writing test the test fee is $35.00, with the writing part the fee is $50.50. I recommend that students find out if the college they plan on attending requires the writing section...typically, they do not. I will soon be meeting with all juniors to set up their senior year schedules. At those meetings I have stressed the importance for them to take either the SAT or ACT this spring (both, if they can afford it). Either one of these tests will be required by virtually every four-year college and by some two-year colleges. Most colleges will accept the SAT or the ACT test for admissions and scholarship reasons. Applications are available in the high school guidance office or on-line. The information below will be helpful... TEST SAT SAT ACT TEST DATE May 4th June 1st June 8th REGISTRATION DUE April 5th May 2nd May 3rd TEST FEE $50.00 $50.00 $35.00/$50.50 (plus optional Writing test)

SCULPTURE CLASS FIELD TRIP

Recently, Mr. Browns sculpture class went on a field trip to Alfred Station, to visit the studio of renowned sculptor Glenn Zweygardt. While at Mr. Zweygardts 16,000 square foot facility, the students completed their resin-sand mold project that they started at B-R with Mr. Brown, by casting aluminum into their molds. While the aluminum was cooling, Mr. Zweygardt gave the students a tour of his studio, explaining the various casting and fabricating processes and showing them a wide variety of finished pieces made from different rocks and metals. In addition, each student created a second sculpture from wax before the field trip. This wax piece will be cast in bronze using the lost-wax process. After the Zweygardt Studio tour we stopped in Andover for a unique lunch experience at The Emporium, followed by a VIP tour of The Artist Knot Fine Art Gallery (also in Andover). At the Artist Knot Gallery, Mr. Zweygardt had several pieces on display, alongside a wide variety of artwork by many other talented artists. This field trip provided a wonderful learning experience for everyone.

7 TH / 8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES

In seventh grade social studies, we are studying the beginnings of the political party system. During the next few weeks, students will learn about the presidencies of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson and the impact that each president had upon the American political and social cultures. In eighth grade, students are acquiring knowledge about the following World War II topics: Holocaust, D-Day, Pearl Harbor, and the effect which the war had upon the American home front. The unit will culminate with the Social Studies Department sponsorship of World War II Week in April. The week will include a panel discussion of local World War II veterans, a Holocaust survivor, the viewing of The Diary of Anne Frank and a touring exhibit from Eldreds World War II Museum. Mr. Yehl

FRESHMEN EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE NEWS

Prior to break, we were fortunate to have Dr. David DiMattio, an astrophysicist from St. Bonaventure, speak with students about astronomical concepts and how that information applies to careers and other subjects. I was really proud of the great questions that the students asked Dr. DiMattio, and some of them are still emailing questions to him. Thanks to Scott Walters for bringing us this contact, as I would not have known about Dr. DiMattio otherwise. Currently, we are engaged with all topics astronomy related. This will take us through to Spring Break. After Spring Break, we will delve into meteorology and climate more deeply. If you are interested in observing a comet this month (without the aid of a telescope), you may get your chance from your own backyard in coming days and weeks. See this link for more information about Comet PANSTARRS, as you wont want to miss it: http://earthsky.org/space/comet-panstarrs-possibly-visible-to-eye-in-march-2013 Finally, all students with an exam average below a 70% will be put on a rotating schedule to receive assistance specific to test-taking strategies for the Earth Science Regents during my Advisement. You, too, can help with this by visiting these review sites where students can take old Regents exams (these links are also present on our class Edmodo page): http://hmxearthscience.com/ http://reviewearthscience.com/ http://www.regentsearth.com/Interactive%20Regents/Interactive%20Regents.htm For those without internet access, I have many old Regents exams that students may bring home to take/practice with you. Please let me know and I will send them home with your child (along with an answer key). Sincerely, Heather Renyck BRCS Science CONGRATULATIONS to April Tarby, Morgan Nellis, Heather Tarby, and Sylvia Phillips for having their work selected to be included in the St. Bonaventure High School Juried Art Exhibit.

These are two cast pieces fresh from the mold before cleaning.

VOCAL MUSIC NEWS

This past weekend, several of our vocal students participated in the Sr. High AllCounty event. The honors chorus is selected based on an audition in February in which each one had to sing their part alone with another vocal part. In other words, a soprano would audition with no other sopranos, but with an alto, tenor, and bass. The participants were: Soprano: Carmen Dickerson, Mallory Childs, Anna Morsman, Erin Clark, and Brandy Tarby; Altos: Rachel Clark, Kayela Perkins, and April Tarby; Bass: Kim Brighon, Jr. and Dallas Winchell. These are very solid young singers and I am very proud of each one. This weekend is our last County festival of the year. Vocally it includes Jr. High Chorus and 6th grade chorus. Our participants are for Jr. High: Soprano: Bailey Dickerson, MacKenzie Lewis, and Alayna Rockefeller; Altos: Haylee Burdick and Leanna Krisher; Tenor: Joseph Gordon and Jacob Tarby. For 6th grade chorus: Soprano: Rebecca Clark, Hannah Clark, Leann Dimpfl, Audrey Ginter, Mikayla Lasnick, Madeline McDonald, Jontelle Pennington, Savannah Puccinelli, Nicolas Scarpa, Heidi Sturdevant, and Sydney Torrey; Alto: Hunter Allen, Micah Crump, Sheldon Gardner, Grace Pierce, Austin Pilon, Cassidy Sawyer, and Shyann Taft. There is a change in our performance schedule. Our next major performance is the Dessert Concert and it has been rescheduled for April 14th at 2:00PM. It is no longer on March 24th, which is what the school calendar says. Please make note of this if you wish to come to this performance. All other vocal concerts are still as scheduled. This concert is more pops oriented and features our students as soloists, or in small groups. It is a fun afternoon of showcasing some of the musical talent here at BR. Lastly, I would like to mention how pleased I was with the musical results of our December concert. The students did very well and I also think that for the Halleluiah Chorus we may have had the most audience members come up as weve ever had. It was a great evening all around, thanks to each one who came. Also, special thanks to Mrs. Ferris for guest conducting, she did an outstanding job (of course). Musically yours, Chris Keir

SAT MATH REVIEW SESSIONS

After the Easter Break, I will be conducting after school SAT Math Review sessions for anyone who has signed up for the upcoming SATs. I would like to run the sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I am willing to adjust that to work around any sports conflicts. I anticipate approximately one hour for each session. There will be a sign up sheet outside of Room 315 for the students who plan on attending. Test dates are May 4th which has a registration deadline of April 5th and June 1st with a registration deadline of May 2nd. Consult sat.collegeboard.org for more information. Thank you, Mr. McDonnell

WHATS HAPPENING IN MR. ES PE

Mr. Emery Some of the questions students recently encountered in our Dance and Basketball Unit were: When was the earliest written depiction of dance in recorded history? Who is the inventor of basketball and what was the organization that helped him in the proliferation of the game? Can dance and basketball be part of a healthy lifestyle for life? Throughout our recent basketball and dance unit, students were given the basic concepts on how they could incorporate these activities into lifelong activities. Basketball is not only a great game to teach kids about, but it has such rich stories about sportsmanship and accomplishment that can be shared too (the J Mac & Jake Presutti). Dance on the other hand, gives students that might not excel in more traditional sports the opportunity to get great exercise and demonstrate their abilities in that area. Next up...students will learn about a great game invented by our friends to the North. They will also understand why the quote Do you believe in Miracles became so important in our country!

MATH 8
It is that time of year again! State tests are right around the corner. The state math test will be given April 24- 26. We will be reviewing in class to prepare for these exams. If you would like to help your student be better prepared, you can use www.studyisland.com. All 8th graders have accounts and can log in using br, first initial and last name, so Joe Smith would be brjsmith. The password is simply the students lunch card number. All of the topics on the state test are available on this website for practice. I will also be reviewing specific topics during advisement. All 8th graders are welcome to attend.

HOP INTO READING

Mrs. Day, Mrs. Britt and Ms. Ebeling Reading alongside your child can inspire in him/her a lifelong love for books. Try one of these ideas to help your child get the most out of your special reading time: Make a reading date. Let your child choose a spot, such as a playground or a backyard. Then pack up your books and blanket to sit on, and head out. Your child will see that reading can take place anywhere! Show your child that reading is fun and interesting. Dont hesitate to laugh out loud if your book is funny. Stop to read a passage that you especially like, or tell your child about an interesting part of your story. Encourage your child to share with you, too. After reading, discuss your books. This will help your child understand and remember what has been read. You might talk about how the stories are similar and different. Last but not least, have fun!!!!

PREKINDERGARTEN
Mrs. Washer, Mrs. OGrady, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Loucks.................. The students at Pre-K are working hard on their kindergarten readiness skills (letters, sounds, numbers, etc.), but most of all, learning how to work with a group of peers. It has been a busy three months at Pre-K. In December, we enjoyed the holidays by sharing our traditions and learning about how other people celebrate at this time of year. We did some research on Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. We enjoyed some cooking projects and activities to go along with these traditions. The students enjoyed making their own wrapping paper to wrap a special gift for their parents. In January, we welcomed in the new year! We added our last names on our attendance board and started printing our last name. We talked about Martin Luther King Jr., met our new president, and did a variety of winter activities - including adding snow in our water table to build a snowman in the classroom! February started off with a celebration of Groundhog Day! We learned many interesting facts about groundhogs, made models of groundhogs from groundhog dough, made groundhog puppets, created groundhog burrows, and experimented with shadows. We learned about Chinese New Year (the year of the snake) and the Chinese culture. We took turns dressing up as a dragon to lead the Chinese New Year parade. Valentines Day was celebrated with a special snack we made to share with our friends. It was an exciting day at Pre-K when we added our 100th link to our days in school chain! We did a variety of 100 day activities and reminisced through pictures of the 100 great days at Pre-K. March will be an exciting month! We started off by celebrating Dr. Seusss birthday. We did several activities with a variety of his rhyming books. Our favorite was making oobleck after reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck. The students became authors and illustrators of their own rhyming book - which they could read! We are planning a trip to Sheas Performing Arts Center to see Sesame Street Live on March 7th! Were so excited!! Throughout the months, we have enjoyed Mrs. Pratts stories at our Pre-K Library and our trips to the Bolivar Free Library with wonderful stories from Mrs. Fuller! Thanks to both of them for opening our minds to the unending world of books! Our Barnes and Noble shelves have also exposed us to many amazing childrens authors and illustrators.

classify and categorize, sequence, cause and effect, drawing conclusions, and main idea. The students have also learned many new letters and sight words. (Letters: Rr, Dd, Kk, Oo, Hh, and Ll. Sight words: see, look, they, you, of, are, that, do, one, two, three, four, and five). Over the next month, we will be learning about consonant blends, along with the letters Gg, Ee, and Ww. Our upcoming sight words are: here, go, and from. Using old and new letters, the students will continue blending sounds and reading new words. Keep practicing these skills at home to help your child become a better reader! We are very proud of how far our students have come so far. Keep up the good work! In math, we have been very busy learning about addition and subtraction. The students have been learning how to write number sentences for both operations, and how to solve different equations. It is very important to practice addition and subtraction facts with your child at home to help them with their fluency. We will continue this skill as we move into composing and decomposing numbers 11-19 and place value. The following students have celebrated their birthdays: January 9th- Waide Karnuth 18th - Alexis Ireland 21st - Karlie Thomas 25th - Genesis Easton 29th - Emily Pierce February 6th - Jasper Burdick 23rd - Jesse Jarrard 24th - Dane DePriter March 1st - Danika Saunders 13th - Jeremy Trzecieski 15th - Logan Proctor 17th - Bryan Mosher 21st - Rebecca Cass 25th - Landon Sisson 29th - Joey Danaher

MONEYSAVER SHOPPING GUIDE

MARCH 12, 2013

FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Farwell, Mrs. Ferris, Mrs. McClellan, Mrs. Scott................ To get into the Super Bowl spirit in January first grade wore their favorite jerseys to school. We used the two-digit numbers on our jerseys to have a little math fun! We used tally marks to chart our numbers, graphed our predictions of who would win the big game, and we did a little adding and subtracting too. February brought Dental Health Month to our classrooms with Ms. Warner from the Allegany County Health Department. She brought with her Mr. Jaws, and they shared great ways to keep our teeth healthy and strong. They even gave us a new toothbrush to help us keep our teeth clean. Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! To celebrate Dr. Seuss birthday (March 2), we have a week of fun-filled craziness; Silly Sock Day, Crazy Who Hair, Wacky Outfit, Dress as Your Favorite Character, and PJ Day. Pictured is our Crazy Who Hair.

Remember to keep reading at home together. You, as parents, are your childs first and most important teacher! Together we will build strong readers.

SECOND GRADE
Ms. Miles, Mrs. Livingston, Miss Scoville and Mr. Bogey............... We have been very busy in second grade. During the first week of March, we celebrated Read Across America Week. Throughout the week, celebrity readers came to our classrooms to read Dr. Seuss books to us. On Thursday, March 7, we had Family Literacy Night which was filled with activities centered on the great childrens author Dr. Seuss. A huge thank you goes out to the teachers who helped make the weeks activities possible. On March 20, the Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre will be to our school to put on a play. The play is Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs! Dinosaurs? by Rick Balian. The actors will be using life like dinosaur puppets. In reading, we have read many stories and learned a lot of skills that good readers use when they read. We have been studying the authors purpose, making inferences and fact and opinion statements. We just finished unit four of our reading series. In math, we have been working hard to learn many different concepts. We have worked on adding and subtracting with and without regrouping and problem solving using addition and subtraction. By the end of second grade, every student needs to know from memory all sums of one-digit numbers. One way to help your child practice this at home is to use flash cards. Congratulations to our students of the month: Ms. Miles student of the month is Zane Pangburn. Mr. Bogeys student of the month is Ethen Lewis. Mrs. Livingstons student of the month is Ben Kisel. Ms. Scovilles student of the month is Jaeger Turybury.

Busy days at BRCS Pre-K!!

THIRD GRADE KINDERGARTEN

Mr. Butler, Miss Glover, Mrs. Lovell, Mrs. Mitchell.......... Over the past couple months, the kindergarten classes have been working very hard and have accomplished so much! We discussed How people, plants, and animals grow and change. We read See How We Grow, Farfallina and Marcel, Seeds, Hide Clyde, and many more! The students worked on activities that taught them about life cycles and friendship. We are currently learning about exploring and adventures through stories like Bunny Day, My Lucky Day, One Little Mouse, and Goldilocks and The Three Bears. We will continue this theme into March with the following stories: If You Could go to Antarctica and Abuela. Along with these stories, the students have worked on and will continue to work on the following skills: character, setting, plot, compare and contrast, Mrs. Rickicki, Mrs. Cawley, Mr. Smith.................. Its hard to believe, but we are half-way through the year. Third graders have been working diligently in math, reading, and writing. In writing, we have been learning how to support our opinions with strong reasons. Also, we have tried our hand at using adjectives, similes, and metaphors to help readers understand our writing. In reading, we have compared fiction and non-fiction texts. The students discovered that non-fiction has many features and reading for information is fun. Reading groups are becoming places for students to compare books and create thoughtful questions. This study helps the children make informed choices when visiting the school library and the Colonial Library. Cont. on next pg.

participating in a review unit as we prepare for the New York State ELA Assessment. We will be practicing some important test-taking strategies in class with students completing practice at home, as well. Please help your child in preparing for the ELA test they will take April 16-18 by making sure he or she completes the practice homework, applying the strategies learned in class. Together, we can help your children be successful in 4th grade ELA! Congratulations to Mrs. Perrys recent students of the month: TJ Duchesne, Courtney Hitchcock and Tasha Wedge, and to Mr. Pruchs students of the month Aliyah Perrin, Alexander MacDonnell and Paige Taylor. One of our recent highlights in science class was visiting Starlab in the multipurpose room. Starlab is a portable planetarium, and was brought to us by the good folks at BOCES, especially Mrs. Busack. The boys and girls loved being able to see all of the wonderful things inside of Starlab. In social studies class, we spent the past couple of weeks reading the terrific Journey to Nowhere, the story of a pioneer family moving from New England to western New York in 1815, the year before the year without a winter.

FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Perry, Mr. Pruch, Miss Weitzel................. Multiplication and division have been taught since the last newsletter. Fractions and geometry are next. Please continue to work with your child and read the Friday letter as to upcoming tests and activities. Reminder: state tests in math are just around the corner. Congratulations to Sarah Clark and Emma Murphy for being named students of the month in December and January. Also, congratulations goes out to Aliyah Cole, our newest member of the student of the month club. Here in 4th grade ELA class, we have been studying and learning about the Amazon Rainforest as we continue to meet the Common Core Standards. We read The Great Kapok Tree, written by Lynn Cherry, to kick-off our new writing genre, opinion pieces. The author wrote the story to try to persuade the readers to support the issue of not chopping down the rainforest. We discovered the importance of looking at both sides of the fence when forming an opinion about a topic. In an attempt to learn more about chopping or not chopping in the rainforest, we split up into groups to read some informational text to find support for a controversial issue. Through following the 6+1 Traits of Writing, students completed a graphic organizer and proceeded through the writing process to write an opinion essay supporting one side or the other of the topic. The essays were then typed, using the skills they are learning in their computer class with Mr. Feuchter. Students sitting on the same side of the fence joined together to create Powerpoints to present to the class. As a result of the unit, students learned to appreciate both sides of an opinion even if they dont share the same opinion. As we continue to work throughout the month of March and into April, we will be

FIFTH GRADE
Mrs. Smith, Miss French............. ELA ELA class has been filled with lots of reading and writing! We continue to read interesting stories from the basal. We have focused on opinion and informative writing during writing workshop time. Fifth graders had to do a research project on an endangered animal last month. Every student presented their essay or poster to the class. They all did a marvelous job!! All fifth graders are expected to log their reading minutes for the Book-It Program. It is amazing to see how many students increase their reading minutes each month. We are also participating in the Read to Ride Program which is sponsored by Darien Lake. If a student reads for seven hours and logs their minutes, they get a free Darien Lake ticket to use in July or August. We have had three more students chosen as Student of the Month in our classroom. All three have exhibited respectfulness and responsibility. Congratulations to Jaydon McDonald, Seeara Wojtczak, and Madison Cowles!! Happy Birthday wishes go out to: Makayla Kreamer - January 11 Maggie Schiralli - January 22 Caleigh Sisson - February 2 Austin Davis - February 18 Gabe Thornton - March 19

Shanties that fall partially through the ice become hard to remove and create hazards to snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles on the ice. Shanties that remain after ice out (when the ice has melted away) become navigation hazards for boats. Owners that fail to remove their shanty by March 15 can be ticketed and face a maximum possible fine of $100. f

Please remember those who help all of us here in Southwestern New York by giving their time to help their neighbors, said Bill Tucker, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Southwestern New York. We want to thank our heroes during Red Cross Month - our volunteers, blood donors, class takers and financial supporters who help us assist those in need. March was first proclaimed as Red Cross Month 70 years ago by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since 1943, every president, including President Obama, has designated March as Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross is synonymous with helping people, and has been doing so for more than 130 years. The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year in this country, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families - in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the world; collects and distributes about 40 percent of the nations blood supply and trains more than seven million people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills every year.

BONAVENTURE UNIVERSITY JURIED ART EXHIBITION Every year, St. Bonaventure University hosts a juried art exhibition for middle school students. This year, 18 schools, including Oswayo Valley, submitted student work. In all, over 300 entries were received and reviewed by 3 jurors. Approximately 63 pieces of two-dimensional art work were accepted to be displayed in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University. This year, 8 students from the Oswayo Valley Middle School were selected to join this acclaimed exhibition. The student artists are as follows: Sixth grade: Olivia Jandrew, Morgan Spinks, and Anastasia Maxson; Seventh grade: Emilee Andress, Brooke Siebert, and Noah Howard; Eighth grade: Hannah Metcalf and Gabrielle Anselmi. Additionally, each of the 3 jurors was asked to select one work of art which stood out to them as especially talented and note-worthy. Of all the entries, Noah Howards pencil drawing of a crane in flight was selected to be featured as one of the Jurors Choice submissions. The opening of the exhibition will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Family and friends of the student artists are encouraged to come celebrate! Please RSVP at 716-375-2479.

During just the past six months the American Red Cross of Southwestern New York has responded to 66 local emergencies, assisted over 100 military families and trained over 500 people in disaster preparedness. In addition, our generous local donors have donated over 8,500 units of blood from July 2012 through January 2013. Red Cross Month is a great time for people to become part of the Red Cross and there are many different ways to do it, Tucker said. They can develop a preparedness plan for their household, become a Red Cross volunteer, give blood, or take a Red Cross class, just to name a few. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. An average of 91 cents of every dollar given to the Red Cross is invested in helping people in need. The American Red Cross of Southwestern New York has a number of activities planned for Red Cross Month, including Savor the Flavor Events on March 3rd from 12p-3p at the Cuba VFW, March 10th from 12p-3p at the Olean Elks Lodge, and March 17th from 12p-3p at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. DOLLAR STRETCHERS WHY WRAP GIFTS? I have saved a lot of money by not buying wrapping paper. On our third sons 6th birthday, I forgot to buy the wrapping paper, so we decided to hide his gifts. We gave him the first clue, and he had to figure out where it was hidden. When he found the gift, there was a clue to the next gift until he found them all with the birthday card on the last gift. All of the kids had so much fun, so we had to do all of their birthdays this way. We even tried to go back to wrapping the presents once, and they were very disappointed. Our kids are now 22, 20, 18 (this is the one we started with at 6), 13, 6 and 4. The older ones still talk about how much they enjoyed finding their gifts. It saved us money and created some fun family memories. -Shelly
