I often hear my students say that they hate drawing the hair part when it comes to portrait drawing. I love drawing hair and making my pencil portrait drawing look realistic. One of the most important key to draw hair is to observe the tone and see how the hair flows. Tools used: 2H wood cased pencil 5B wood cased pencil Facial tissue, q-tip/ear bud Kneaded eraser If you find it difficult to learn from this lesson, I suggest you to go through the 12-Weeks Pencil Portrait Mastery Exercises. Start by drawing the outline of the hair and face with 2B pencil.

Then, draw the outline for some obvious parts of the hair.

We will start by drawing the left side of the hair first. For now, focus on the top left area as shown below:

Start by drawing the hair with a blunt 5B pencil. A blunt 5B pencil will help to speed up the process. You dont have to press it hard with 5B pencil. It is alright if the tone that you draw at this point isnt even because we will blend it later.

Continue drawing by starting from the bottom part of the area.

Next, blend the entire area with tissue.

Draw some obvious darker areas by pressing harder with blunt 5B pencil.

After that, blend the entire area with tissue again.

For now, we will be focusing on drawing the bangs. Draw mid tone on the upper part with 5B pencil.

Draw some strokes with blunt 5B pencil starting from the root of the hair and pull it to the tip. Then, draw some strokes again with sharp 5B pencil. The length of the strokes shouldnt be the same. 1.) Blunt 5B pencil strokes 2.) Sharp 5B pencil strokes 3.) Blunt + Sharp 5B pencil strokes

Continue drawing the lower part with strokes by using blunt and sharp 5B pencils. There are some strokes that are darker, press on them harder from the root of the hair and pull it to the tip. (Look at the pictures from left to right.)

Observe the reference picture and see which area of it should be darker and draw it harder with blunt 5B pencil. You dont have to replicate the reference picture exactly, just some obvious darker areas will do.

Once youve finished drawing the bangs, move on to draw the top of the hair. Use blunt 5B pencil to draw some obvious darker areas on top of the hair.

Next, draw strokes with sharp 5B pencil from the upper part. For the lower part, draw strokes with blunt 5B pencil and press lightly because the lower part is lighter. The thin arrows are the strokes drawn with sharp 5B pencil and the thick arrows are the strokes drawn with blunt 5B pencil. Follow the direction of the arrows to draw.

Observe the reference picture and see which area of it should be darker and darken with blunt 5B pencil. Keep in mind that you dont have to follow the reference picture exactly, just some obvious darker areas will do.

Once youve finished drawing the top left area of the hair, your drawing should look like this now.

Continue drawing the lower part of the hair with blunt 5B pencil.

Again, it is alright if the tone isnt even. Ignore the earring and continue draw.

After that, blend the entire area with tissue.

Draw some obvious darker areas by pressing harder with blunt 5B pencil.

Then, blend the entire area with tissue softly. Start to draw mid tone from top to bottom with blunt 5B pencil. Use sharp and blunt 5B pencils to draw the hair on the left (The same method of drawing strokes as on page 9. Draw from A to B (Blunt 5B pencil) Draw from A to B (Sharp 5B pencil)

Continue drawing mid tone for the hair and strokes on the left.

Continue drawing until the bottom. Then, observe which area should be darker and darken it with blunt 5B pencil. Draw some strokes in it with sharp 5B pencil. The length, darkness, and placement of the strokes can be random but must follow the direction of hair flow..

Heres a simple way for making your hair drawing more realistic. Draw some strokes for flyaway hairs on the left side with sharp 2H pencil. The strokes can be random as well.

After drawing the left area of the hair, your hair drawing should look like this now.

Then, we will move on to draw the right side of the hair. Start by drawing the hair in front with blunt 5B pencil.

Blend the entire area with tissue and draw obvious darker areas first. Then, draw mid tone by pressing harder with 5B pencil.

Start drawing strokes with sharp and blunt 5B pencils. Thereafter, observe which area should be darker and darken them by pressing harder.

Then, draw some obvious darker areas with blunt and sharp 5B pencils.

Dont worry about the details first. Draw mid tone with blunt 5B pencil from top to bottom.

After drawing mid tone until the bottom, start to draw some strokes with sharp and blunt 5B pencils on the upper parts.

Draw some strokes on the middle part as well. Make sure the strokes are random but follow the direction of hair. Continue drawing it to the lower part.

Then, draw the hair part beside with blunt 5B pencil.

After youve finished drawing this area, blend it with tissue.

Again, draw some obvious darker areas with blunt 5B pencil after blending with tissue. Continue by drawing mid tone.

Start to draw strokes with sharp and blunt 5B pencils from top to bottom.

For the red circled area as shown below, we will use kneaded eraser to draw highlights but not now. We will also draw the shadow underneath later.

Right now, your drawing should look like this.

Now, use blunt 5B pencil to draw this area.

Then, blend the entire area with tissue.

Draw the shadow underneath with blunt 5B pencil as well. Then, draw mid tone on the area.

After drawing the mid tone, draw some strokes with sharp and blunt 5B pencils from the top to bottom.

Next, use a kneaded eraser to erase the area as shown in the red circle. Erase it like how you draw the strokes.

Draw the area around it to make it stand out more.

Draw the next area beside with blunt 5B pencil. You might want to blend it with q-tip/cotton bud as the area is quite small.

Draw the darker areas and mid tone with blunt 5B pencil. Then, draw on some strokes.

Your drawing should look like this now. Theres only one last area left to finish the hair drawing.

Draw the area below with blunt 5B pencil and blend the entire area with tissue.

Then, draw obvious darker areas and mid tone with blunt 5B pencil.

After that, draw strokes with sharp and blunt 5B pencils from the top to bottom.

Then, draw some fly away hairs on the right with 2H pencil.

Draw some fly away hairs on the top of the hair as well.

Then, use kneaded eraser to erase fly away hairs like how you draw the strokes. They arent completely white so after you erase them, use 2H pencil to darken them. Dont just copy the steps, learn the techniques from every steps that you draw and apply them to other hair drawings. This is not the only method to draw hair so dont just rely on this and you could probably find a method that suits you better. The more you draw, the more you will understand each steps and it will become much easier and faster eventually.
